Chapter 4: The Envelope He Never Wanted Her to Open

Sarah stared at the envelope.

Her name was written across it in Ben's familiar handwriting. The same handwriting that appeared on birthday cards, grocery lists, and the little notes he used to leave beside her coffee cup.

But this envelope was different.

It had no date.

No greeting.

Just her name.

“Ben,” she whispered, “why is my name on this?””

Ben gripped the edge of his blanket.

“Please don't open it.””

Sarah looked at him.

“You gave it to Dr. Arnold. You brought it to a hospital.

You put my name on it. And now you're telling me not to open it?””

“I wasn't planning for you to see it.””

“Then why did you write it?””

Ben turned his face toward the window.

Arnold stepped closer.

“Sarah, I think you should understand that this envelope has been in my possession for some time. Ben asked me to keep it somewhere safe.””

Sarah looked at the doctor.

“Why would he give you something that belongs to our marriage?””

Arnold hesitated.

“Because he didn't know what else to do with it.””

Ben's voice sharpened.

“Arnold, enough.””

The doctor turned toward him.

“Ben, you've had opportunities to tell her. She's standing right here, and she's asking you directly.””

“I know what she's asking!””

“Then answer her.””

Ben pressed his lips together.

Sarah picked up the envelope.

Her fingers shook as she turned it over.

There was a small strip of tape sealing the flap.

She looked at Ben one last time.

“I'm opening it.””

He didn't stop her.

Inside were several folded sheets of paper.

The first page contained only a few lines.

Sarah unfolded it.

Sarah,

If you're reading this, then I've failed to tell you something important.

She stopped.

Her throat tightened.

She continued.

I know you've asked me what's wrong. I know you've noticed the changes. I also know I've hurt you by pretending everything is normal.

Sarah looked up.

Ben was watching her.

“Keep reading,” Arnold said quietly.

Sarah lowered her eyes.

There are things happening in my life that I don't know how to explain. I thought I could deal with them alone. I thought keeping you away would protect you.

But every day I remain silent, I make that promise harder to keep.

The final line was written in darker ink.

Please don't hate me before you know the whole truth.

Sarah lowered the paper.

“That's it?””

Arnold nodded.

She looked through the remaining sheets.

There were handwritten notes, several dates, and a few names she didn't recognize.

But nothing explained what was happening.

“Ben, what does this mean?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“It's complicated.””

Sarah let out a breath that sounded almost like a laugh.

“Everything is complicated. That's what everyone keeps telling me.””

She placed the letter on the table.

“I don't need a perfect explanation. I need my husband to speak to me.””

Ben's eyes filled.

“I know.””

“Then talk.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Sarah pulled the chair closer.

“Start with the first day you decided to hide something from me.””

Ben looked down.

“I don't remember exactly.””

“Then tell me what you do remember.””

He glanced toward Arnold.

The doctor quietly moved away from the bed.

“I'll give you two some privacy.””

Before leaving, Arnold turned to Sarah.

“If you need me, I'll be nearby.””

The door closed.

For several seconds, the room was silent.

Sarah sat down again.

“Ben, did you think I would leave you if you told me?””

He shook his head.

“Never.””

“Then what were you afraid of?””

Ben took a long breath.

“I was afraid of what would happen afterward.””

“To us?””

“To everything.””

Sarah looked at him carefully.

“Is someone threatening you?””

His eyes shifted.

“It's not like that.””

“Then what is it?””

He didn't answer.

Sarah stood up and walked toward the window.

Outside, a delivery driver pushed a cart across the parking lot. A woman hurried toward the entrance, holding the hand of a little boy.

Ordinary life continued.

And Sarah felt as if she had been locked outside of hers.

She turned back.

“Do you remember last month when I asked you why you kept your phone turned face down?””

Ben nodded.

“You said the screen was too bright.””

“I remember.””

“And when I asked why you started taking calls outside?””

“Sarah...””

“You told me the reception was bad inside.””

Ben looked away.

“I'm sorry.””

She wiped her cheek.

“I wasn't asking because I wanted to control you. I was asking because I could feel you disappearing.””

Ben reached for her hand.

This time, she didn't move away.

“I'm still here,” he whispered.

“Then let me be here with you.””

He squeezed her fingers.

For a moment, she thought he might finally tell her everything.

Instead, he said, “You need to go home tonight.””

Sarah stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because I need time.””

“You've had time.””

“I know.””

“You've had days. Weeks. Maybe longer. And I've been standing in our kitchen wondering what I did wrong.””

Ben closed his eyes.

“You did nothing wrong.””

“Then stop treating me like I did.””

He began to cry silently.

Sarah had never seen him cry like that.

She reached up and touched his cheek.

“Ben, I'm not your enemy.””

He held her hand against his face.

“I know.””

“Then why does it feel like you're fighting me?””

He couldn't answer.

Sarah eventually gathered the envelope and returned it to the table.

“I'll leave it here for now.””

Ben nodded.

She walked toward the door.

Just before opening it, she turned around.

“One more thing.””

Ben looked at her.

“Did you tell Emily I had abandoned you?””

“No.””

“Did you tell anyone that I didn't care?””

“Never.””

Sarah nodded slowly.

“Then someone has been telling a very different story about our marriage.””

She opened the door.

And as she stepped into the corridor, she saw Emily standing several feet away.

The nurse was holding a cup of coffee.

When their eyes met, Emily looked down.

Sarah stopped.

“Emily.””

The nurse slowly raised her head.

Sarah's voice was quiet, but firm.

“You said I should have been beside my husband.””

Emily swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Who told you I wasn't?””

Emily looked toward Ben's room.

May you like

Then she whispered a name.

“Someone who knows him better than you think.””
