Chapter 9: The First Children
Daniel read the birth certificate again.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
"Mom, what is this?""
Evelyn couldn't answer.
Grace closed the front door and locked it.
"Everyone needs to sit down.""
Rose stared at her mother.
"You're telling us there's another secret?""
Grace nodded.
"Several.""
Daniel held up the certificate.
"Why does this say Evelyn was my biological mother?""
Grace looked at him.
"Because she was.""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Daniel shook his head.
"No. You told me you couldn't have children.""
"I couldn't," Evelyn whispered.
"Then how?""
Grace walked toward the kitchen.
She returned carrying a wooden box.
It was old, with chipped corners and a brass lock.
"I kept this for twenty-six years.""
She placed it on the table.
Inside were photographs, hospital bracelets, handwritten letters, and a small cassette tape.
Rose picked up one of the bracelets.
It read:
*BABY A — WHITMORE.*
The second read:
*BABY B — CARTER.*
Emily looked at them.
"Two babies?""
Grace nodded.
"Not twins. Not originally.""
Everyone stared.
Grace explained that twenty-six years earlier, Evelyn had become pregnant with Arthur Whitmore's child.
But the pregnancy had ended in a medical emergency.
The baby survived.
Evelyn did not know.
Arthur had been told that his wife had died during childbirth.
Instead, Dr. Hale had secretly transferred the newborn to another hospital.
The child was Daniel.
Evelyn had survived the emergency, but Arthur convinced her that the baby had been stillborn.
Months later, Grace gave birth to Lily.
And Arthur discovered something that terrified him.
Grace had found evidence that Dr. Hale had been altering medical records.
She had also discovered that Arthur had ordered the transfer of Evelyn's baby.
The doctor had been paid to create an entirely different identity for Daniel.
When Grace threatened to expose the scheme, Arthur arranged for her to disappear.
"Why didn't you tell Evelyn?"" Rose asked.
Grace looked at her.
"Because Arthur threatened to kill both children if I did.""
Evelyn began crying.
"I spent thirty-two years believing I had lost my only baby.""
Grace reached for her hand.
"I'm sorry.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"No. You were protecting him.""
Daniel stood.
"Then who was the other woman in that photograph?""
Grace hesitated.
Rose looked at the picture again.
There were two women standing beside a hospital bed.
Evelyn.
And Grace.
But there was a third figure in the background.
A man.
Arthur Whitmore.
Grace pointed toward him.
"Your grandfather knew everything.""
Daniel stared.
"He arranged it?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he wanted to control the Whitmore inheritance. He believed a child raised outside the family could be used as leverage.""
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"Did he know I was alive?""
"Yes," she whispered.
"He knew.""
Rose felt sick.
"So my mother was forced to hide while my brother was raised by the very woman who gave birth to him.""
Grace nodded.
"And Lily was sent away because Arthur believed he could use her to control Michael.""
Emily looked up.
"Michael?""
Grace turned toward her.
"Your biological father.""
Emily shook her head.
"Where is he?""
Grace's eyes filled.
"I don't know.""
Rose noticed something strange.
Her mother had not said Michael was dead.
She had said she didn't know where he was.
"Mom, is Michael still alive?""
Grace didn't answer.
Instead, she opened the wooden box and removed a small photograph.
It showed a man standing beside a young Grace.
He had dark hair and a familiar smile.
Rose looked at Daniel.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
Daniel took the photograph.
"That's my father?""
Grace nodded.
"Michael Carter.""
Daniel stared at the picture.
"Why did he abandon us?""
Grace shook her head.
"He didn't.""
"Then where was he?""
"He was arrested.""
"By whom?""
"Arthur.""
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
"Grandfather?""
Grace nodded.
"Arthur arranged for Michael to be imprisoned under a false identity. He wanted him out of the way so he could control the company and keep the children separated.""
Rose felt her stomach twist.
"Is he still in prison?""
Grace looked toward the window.
"No.""
"Then where?""
Before Grace could answer, a phone rang.
It wasn't Rose's.
It was Evelyn's.
She looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Evelyn.""
She went completely still.
"Michael?""
Grace grabbed the phone.
"Where are you?""
The man laughed softly.
"Still asking questions after all these years?""
Grace began crying.
"Please. We need to see you.""
"I know.""
A pause.
Then Michael said:
"I'm outside.""
Everyone turned toward the window.
A black car was parked near the fence.
A man stood beside it.
Older now.
Gray at the temples.
But unmistakably the same man from the photograph.
Emily covered her mouth.
"That's him.""
Daniel walked toward the door.
"Father?""
Michael raised one hand.
"Don't come closer.""
Daniel stopped.
"Why?""
Michael looked toward the house.
"Because the people who have been watching this family are still here.""
Rose stepped beside Grace.
"What do you mean?""
Michael looked directly at her.
"Victoria.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"She's in custody.""
Michael shook his head.
"Not for the reason you think.""
He opened the passenger door.
A woman stepped out.
She was wearing a dark coat and sunglasses.
Rose recognized her immediately.
Victoria.
But she wasn't alone.
A second woman emerged from the driver's side.
She looked almost exactly like Victoria.
Same height.
Same dark hair.
Same facial features.
Only her eyes were different.
Daniel stared.
"Who is that?""
Michael spoke through the phone.
"That's the woman who pushed Evelyn.""
Rose frowned.
"Then who is the woman in custody?""
Michael looked toward the house.
"Her sister.""
Evelyn stepped backward.
"Victoria has a twin?""
Michael nodded.
"And one of them has spent years pretending to be the other.""
Rose looked at Daniel.
"Which one married you?""
Daniel couldn't answer.
Michael took a breath.
Then he said:
"The woman who married you wasn't Victoria Whitmore.""
Daniel's face went completely white.
Michael continued.
"She was Lily's adoptive sister. And she's been using the Whitmore name to get access to something Arthur hid before he died.""
Rose looked at Emily.
Emily's fingers tightened around hers.
"What did he hide?"" Rose asked.
Michael looked directly at them.
"The original inheritance documents.""
Then he added:
"And they name the rightful owner of the entire Whitmore empire.""
The police arrived minutes later.
The woman beside Michael was taken into custody.
The other woman, the one who had married Daniel, was nowhere to be found.
Daniel stood on the porch, staring at the road.
His wedding ring felt suddenly foreign on his finger.
"How could I not know?""
Michael approached him.
"Because she wanted you to believe what you saw.""
Daniel turned.
"Did you know?""
"I knew someone was using your identity. I didn't know how far it had gone.""
Daniel looked at the man who had just introduced himself as his father.
"Why didn't you come for me?""
Michael's eyes filled.
"I tried.""
He reached into his coat and removed a stack of old letters.
Every envelope was addressed to Daniel.
Every one had been returned.
"Your grandfather intercepted them.""
Daniel took the letters.
There were dozens.
Some dated from when he was a child.
Others from his teenage years.
The final letter was dated only six months earlier.
Daniel opened it.
My son, if you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you. Don't trust the woman who wears your family name. She knows where your sister is, and she knows what Arthur did.
Daniel looked up.
"Which sister?""
Michael looked toward Rose and Emily.
Then he whispered:
"Both.""
Rose frowned.
"Both?""
Michael nodded.
"Because there's something Grace hasn't told you.""
Grace lowered her head.
Michael continued.
"Rose and Lily weren't the only children born that night.""
The room fell silent.
Evelyn stared at him.
"Michael, don't.""
He looked at her.
"She deserves to know.""
Rose felt her heart pounding.
"Know what?""
Michael took another photograph from his pocket.
It showed Grace holding three newborn babies.
Not two.
Three.
Rose stared at the picture.
One baby wore a bracelet marked ROSE.
The second wore one marked LILY.
The third wore one marked VICTORIA.
Grace began sobbing.
May you like
And then Michael said the words that shattered everything Rose thought she understood.
"Victoria isn't just the woman who tried to kill Evelyn. She's your biological sister, too.""
