Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to Remember

"Say that again.""

Rose's voice was barely audible.

Evelyn Carter was still holding her hand.

"Your mother survived the fire.""

Rose shook her head.

"No. That's impossible.""

"Rose—"

"My mother died when I was six.""

The words came out sharper than she intended.

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"Who told you that?""

"My grandmother.""

"And did she show you a body?""

Rose pulled her hand away.

The question struck harder than Evelyn could have known.

"No. She told me my mother died in a hospital after the fire. She said there was nothing anyone could do.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Behind them, the rooftop was becoming increasingly chaotic. Guests were being escorted back into the ballroom. Security personnel were speaking into radios, and someone had finally covered the broken champagne glasses.

Victoria stood near Daniel, whispering urgently.

"Daniel, we need to leave.""

He ignored her.

"Mom, what fire?""

Evelyn looked at her son.

"Not here.""

"Then where?""

"Somewhere private.""

Daniel glanced at Rose.

"She stays.""

Victoria's head snapped around.

"Excuse me?""

"Rose saved my mother's life. She stays.""

Victoria folded her arms.

"She's an employee.""

"She's a witness.""

"To an accident.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"We haven't seen the footage yet.""

Victoria looked away.

A security guard returned carrying a tablet.

"Mr. Whitmore, we've recovered the recording.""

Daniel took it.

"Play it.""

Victoria stepped forward.

"Daniel, please.""

He pressed the screen.

The footage showed the rooftop from above.

Guests moved between tables. A waiter passed behind Evelyn. Victoria approached her mother-in-law with a champagne flute in her hand.

Then the camera captured everything.

Victoria looked around.

She said something.

Evelyn shook her head.

Victoria stepped closer.

And shoved her.

Not accidentally.

Not because of a stumble.

She placed both hands against Evelyn's chest and pushed with enough force to send the older woman over the railing.

The recording continued.

It showed Rose dropping her tray and sprinting toward the edge.

It showed her catching Evelyn's arm.

It showed her pulling until the older woman was safely back on the rooftop.

Nobody spoke when the video ended.

Daniel watched it again.

His face changed with every second.

Finally, he looked at Victoria.

"You pushed my mother.""

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel, I can explain.""

"Explain what?""

"She was threatening me!""

Evelyn stared at her.

"I was standing there discussing the seating arrangements.""

"You were insulting me!""

"I was asking you to stop making decisions about my son's company.""

Victoria's voice rose.

"Because you never wanted me in this family!""

Daniel lowered the tablet.

"That is not an answer.""

Victoria looked toward the guests.

"You're humiliating me in front of everyone.""

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

"You nearly killed my mother in front of everyone.""

A security guard approached.

"Sir, should we contact the police?""

"Yes. And preserve the recording.""

Victoria grabbed Daniel's arm.

"Don't do this.""

He pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

For the first time, Victoria looked genuinely afraid.

But Rose barely noticed.

Her mind was still trapped on one sentence.

Your mother survived that fire.

Evelyn noticed her silence.

"Rose, may I ask you something?""

Rose looked up.

"Do you have anything that belonged to Grace?""

"Only a photograph.""

"Could I see it?""

Rose hesitated.

Then she reached into the small pocket of her uniform and pulled out a folded photograph.

It was old and slightly faded.

The picture showed a young woman standing beside a little girl with curly brown hair. The woman wore a blue dress and had one arm wrapped protectively around the child.

"My grandmother kept it," Rose explained.

"She said it was taken a few months before the fire.""

Evelyn took the photograph.

Her fingers began to tremble.

"Where did you get this?""

"I just told you.""

Evelyn turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

Grace and Rose. Summer, 2006.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel leaned closer.

"Mom?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at the photograph again.

"Where did Grace get this necklace?""

Rose touched the small silver pendant hanging around her neck.

"It was in the photograph. My grandmother gave it to me when I turned eighteen.""

Evelyn's face went pale.

"She kept it?""

"Kept what?""

"The necklace.""

Evelyn pointed at the tiny engraved symbol.

Two interlocking circles surrounded by a small letter W.

Daniel recognized it.

It was the emblem of the Whitmore family.

"Mom," he whispered.

"That's our family crest.""

Rose looked down.

"What?""

Evelyn slowly returned the photograph.

"Grace worked for our family many years ago.""

Rose stared at her.

"Doing what?""

Evelyn looked toward the ballroom.

"She wasn't just an employee.""

Before she could continue, Victoria interrupted.

"That's enough.""

Everyone turned.

Victoria had moved closer. Her wedding dress was dragging across the marble, and her makeup had begun to run.

"Whatever story you're trying to create, Mrs. Carter, you need to stop.""

Evelyn's expression became icy.

"You should be the last person telling me what to do.""

Victoria looked at Rose.

"Listen carefully. You have no idea what you're getting involved in.""

Rose stood.

"I think I'm starting to.""

Victoria stepped closer.

"Your grandmother was a liar. Whatever she told you about your mother, she told it to keep you quiet.""

Rose's stomach tightened.

"How do you know my grandmother?""

Victoria suddenly stopped speaking.

Daniel noticed.

"Victoria?""

She looked at him.

"I don't.""

"Then why did you say that?""

"I was just guessing.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"No. You know exactly who she is.""

A police officer entered the rooftop.

"Mrs. Carter? We need your statement.""

Evelyn nodded.

Then she looked at Rose.

"Please don't leave tonight. There are things you deserve to know.""

Rose swallowed.

"About my mother?""

"Yes.""

Evelyn paused.

"And about the night she disappeared.""

Rose felt the blood drain from her face.

"Disappeared?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Your mother wasn't reported dead by our family, Rose.""

Rose stared at her.

"Then why did everyone tell me she died?""

Evelyn opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

"Mom.""

"What?""

Daniel slowly turned the phone toward her.

The caller's name was displayed in large letters.

*MARGARET CARTER.*

Rose's grandmother.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

May you like

Then she whispered something that made Rose's blood run cold.

"Don't answer that call.""
