Chapter 7: The Sister Who Had Been Beside Her All Along
"She's been living with you all along, Rose.""
Rose gripped her phone.
"What do you mean?""
Margaret was crying so hard that her words came out broken.
"Your sister. Lily. She's been closer than you think.""
"Grandma, stop speaking in riddles! Who is she?""
Margaret took a shaky breath.
"Think about the people who have been in your life. Think about the person who stayed when everyone else walked away.""
Rose looked at Daniel.
Then at Evelyn.
"Tell me her name.""
Margaret went silent.
"Please," Rose whispered.
"I've lost twenty-six years already. Don't make me lose another minute.""
Finally, Margaret answered.
"Emily.""
Rose felt her stomach drop.
Emily.
Her closest friend.
The woman who had shared an apartment with her for three years. The woman who had held her hand through every difficult birthday. The woman who had helped her pay rent when she lost her previous job.
The woman who had encouraged her to apply for the hotel catering position that brought her to the Whitmore wedding.
"No," Rose whispered.
Margaret began crying again.
"Yes.""
"That's impossible. Emily doesn't even know my family.""
"She knows more than you realize.""
Rose shook her head.
"Emily was adopted.""
"Yes.""
"Her parents raised her in Chicago.""
"Yes.""
"She told me she was an only child.""
Margaret's voice cracked.
"Because that's what they were told.""
Rose gripped the edge of the desk.
"How do you know?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Because I arranged it.""
Twenty-six years earlier, Margaret had arrived at a small hospital outside Boston carrying a baby girl.
Grace had been missing for three days.
The fire had destroyed part of the Whitmore estate, and the authorities had found no reliable evidence of where Grace had gone.
But before disappearing, Grace had managed to get one message to Margaret.
Protect my daughter. Don't let Arthur find her.
Margaret had found Lily at the hospital, hidden under a different name.
The baby was healthy.
A nurse had quietly explained that someone had attempted to remove her from the hospital records.
Margaret knew she couldn't keep both children safe in the same household.
Arthur's men were watching Rose.
So she arranged for Lily to be adopted by a family living hundreds of miles away.
The couple, Thomas and Helen Brooks, had been unable to have children.
They promised to love the little girl as their own.
And Margaret had given them one condition.
They must never reveal the child's original identity unless Grace returned.
"Why didn't you tell me?"" Rose asked.
"Because Arthur's people never stopped searching.""
"And you thought lying to both of us was the answer?""
"I thought keeping you alive was the answer.""
Rose closed her eyes.
She remembered Emily's first day at their apartment.
The way they had laughed over burnt pasta.
The nights Emily had stayed awake with her when Rose had nightmares about the fire.
The small habits they shared.
The same preference for strong coffee.
The same nervous habit of twisting a ring around their fingers.
Suddenly, details that had seemed ordinary felt different.
"Does Emily know?""
Margaret whispered, "No.""
Rose's eyes filled.
"Then I'm calling her.""
Emily answered on the fourth ring.
"Rose? Oh my God. I've been trying to reach you!""
Her voice sounded normal.
Familiar.
Comforting.
And somehow that made everything harder.
"Emily, where are you?""
"At home. Why?""
"Are you alone?""
A pause.
"Yes. What's happening?""
Rose swallowed.
"I need you to come to the Whitmore hotel.""
"Why?""
"Because I think I've found your family.""
Silence.
Then Emily laughed nervously.
"That's not funny.""
"I'm not joking.""
"Rose, are you okay? Did something happen at work?""
Rose looked at the photograph of the two newborn babies.
"Emily, do you remember your adoption papers?""
"Of course.""
"Did they ever mention your birth mother?""
Another pause.
"Why are you asking?""
"Just answer me.""
Emily sighed.
"They said she was young. That's all. Her name wasn't included.""
"Do you remember the name on your original hospital bracelet?""
Emily didn't respond.
"Emily?""
Finally, she whispered, "Lily.""
Rose's hand went numb.
"Your name was Lily?""
"Yes.""
Rose began crying.
Emily's voice changed immediately.
"Rose? What's wrong?""
"Your mother was named Grace Carter.""
The silence on the other end became unbearable.
Then Emily whispered:
"How do you know that name?""
Rose looked at Daniel.
"Because she's my mother, too.""
The call ended.
Forty minutes later, Emily arrived.
She stepped into the private suite wearing jeans, a gray sweater, and the small gold ring she had worn since childhood.
Her eyes immediately found Rose.
"Tell me this is some kind of misunderstanding.""
Rose walked toward her.
"I wish it were.""
Emily looked at Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Then the photographs on the desk.
She picked up the picture of Grace holding the two newborn babies.
Her fingers trembled.
"Who is this woman?""
Rose answered softly.
"Our mother.""
Emily shook her head.
"No.""
"Emily—"
"My parents told me my birth mother died during childbirth.""
"She didn't.""
"Then why did they give me away?""
Rose reached for her hand.
"To protect you.""
Emily pulled away.
"From whom?""
Evelyn answered.
"Arthur Whitmore.""
Emily looked at her.
"Who is that?""
"My late husband.""
Emily laughed bitterly.
"So your family stole my childhood?""
Evelyn lowered her head.
"I won't pretend I didn't benefit from the silence. But I never knew where Grace or Lily had gone.""
Emily stared at her.
"Then why should I believe anything you say?""
"You shouldn't," Evelyn replied quietly.
"Not until you see the evidence.""
Daniel opened the folder and showed her the hospital records.
Emily read them slowly.
Then she stopped at one page.
Her face went white.
"Wait.""
She pointed to a signature at the bottom.
"This name.""
Rose leaned closer.
The signature belonged to the doctor who had signed Emily's adoption paperwork.
Dr. Richard Hale.
Daniel frowned.
"Do you know him?""
Emily nodded slowly.
"He was my pediatrician.""
Rose blinked.
"What?""
"Until I was fourteen. My parents always said he had helped arrange the adoption.""
Daniel checked the document again.
"That makes no sense. This signature is dated three days after the fire.""
Emily looked up.
"Then why did he keep treating me?""
Nobody answered.
Emily took out her phone.
"I have something.""
She opened a photograph.
It showed her standing beside an older man at a charity event.
Rose recognized him immediately.
The same man appeared in the family photographs displayed throughout the Whitmore mansion.
Arthur Whitmore's personal physician.
Emily zoomed in.
Behind them, barely visible near the entrance, stood Victoria.
Rose frowned.
"Why is Victoria in that picture?""
Emily shook her head.
"Because she invited me.""
Rose stared.
"When?""
"Last month. She contacted me through a charity organization and asked me to help organize an event.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Did you meet her privately?""
Emily nodded.
"Twice.""
"What did she want?""
Emily looked at Rose.
"She asked me questions about you.""
Rose felt cold.
"What kind of questions?""
"Where you lived. Who you trusted. Whether you knew anything about your mother.""
Evelyn slowly stood.
"Victoria knew.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"She knew about Grace?""
Emily nodded.
"And she told me something strange.""
"What?""
Emily swallowed.
"She said there was a woman who had been searching for Rose for years.""
Rose stepped forward.
"Who?""
Emily looked at her.
Then she whispered:
"Victoria said that woman was still alive.""
Rose's heart began racing.
"Where is she?""
Emily looked down at her phone.
"I don't know.""
She opened another message.
There was a photograph Victoria had sent her.
A woman stood outside a small white house in Maine.
It was the same house from Rose's photograph.
But this time, the woman was facing the camera.
Rose recognized her immediately.
Her mother.
And standing beside Grace was a man Rose had never seen before.
Emily zoomed in on his face.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Rose, that's the doctor who signed my adoption papers.""
