[CHAPTER 3]

I thought I had already reached the worst part of the night.
I was wrong.
The officer heard Lucas.
“What do you mean, not the first video?”
Vanessa stood so fast that the chair scraped across the floor.
“He is confused.”
Lucas backed into me.
The officer raised his hand.
“Ma’am, sit down.”
“He has been manipulated.”
“Sit down.”
Vanessa stared at Lucas.
He would not look at her.
Finally, she lowered herself back into the chair.
The officer crouched a few feet from Lucas.
“You don’t have to show me anything you don’t want to show me right now.”
Lucas nodded.
“But if there are other recordings involving Emma being hurt or threatened, they may be important.”
Lucas wiped his eyes.
“They’re in a hidden folder.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
The officer asked, “On your phone?”
Lucas nodded.
“Some.”
“Some?”
He swallowed.
“I emailed others to myself.”
I squeezed his shoulder.
He had planned for someone to take his phone away.
No eleven-year-old should have needed that plan.
The officer looked at Vanessa.
Her face had gone still.
Not angry anymore.
Still.
That frightened me more.
He asked Lucas to unlock the folder.
Lucas did.
The officer did not play every video in front of us.
He watched the first few seconds of one.
Then another.
His expression changed.
He stood.
“Mrs. Whitmore, I need you to place your hands behind your back.”
Vanessa shot to her feet.
“What?”
“You are being detained while we investigate.”
“You cannot arrest me because my child made videos without my permission.”
“This is not about whether he had permission.”
She pointed at me.
“She put him up to this.”
I almost answered.
The officer stopped me with a look.
Vanessa continued.
“She hates me. She wants my husband. She has been filling their heads with lies.”
Lucas made a broken sound.
“Stop.”
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You stop.”
The second officer took her arm.
She jerked away.
“Do not touch me.”
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
“I said do not touch me!”
They handcuffed her.
Lucas stared.
I expected him to look relieved.
Instead, he looked shattered.
Vanessa was still his mother.
That truth did not disappear because she had done terrible things.
As they walked her toward the door, she looked back.
Not at Daniel.
Not at me.
At Lucas.
“You’ll regret this.”
I stepped in front of him.
The officer led her outside.
Only then did Lucas start sobbing.
I knelt and pulled him into my arms.
He tried to apologize.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For everything.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
“I should’ve stopped her sooner.”
“You are eleven.”
“I knew.”
“You are eleven.”
He covered his face.
“I knew she was hurting Emma.”
“You recorded it.”
“I should’ve told Dad.”
“You were afraid.”
He nodded.
That broke my heart.
Daniel called from the hospital twenty minutes later.
Emma’s temperature had stabilized.
The doctors wanted to keep her for observation.
Daniel sounded like he had aged ten years.
“Where is Vanessa?”
“Police took her.”
Silence.
“And Lucas?”
“With me.”
Another pause.
“Is he okay?”
“No.”
Daniel exhaled shakily.
“I’m coming back as soon as Emma is settled.”
“You should stay with her.”
“What about Lucas?”
“I’m not leaving him.”
Daniel whispered, “Thank you.”
After the police finished photographing the kitchen, one officer asked if Lucas had somewhere safe to spend the night.
I said he could stay with my sister and me.
Lucas immediately shook his head.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“What’s wrong?”
“I want to stay here.”
The officer explained that the house might temporarily be considered part of an active investigation.
Lucas became more upset.
“Then I want Dad.”
The word carried so much meaning.
The officer asked gently, “Daniel?”
Lucas nodded.
“He’s my dad.”
I saw the officer glance at his notes.
Technically, Daniel was not.
Emotionally, there was no question.
Child protective services arrived shortly after midnight.
A woman named Ms. Hart interviewed Lucas privately.
I sat in the hallway.
For nearly an hour, I heard nothing.
Then Lucas came out holding a tissue.
Ms. Hart looked grave.
She spoke with the officers.
Then she asked me about my role in the family.
I explained that I had been Emma’s nanny for nine months.
“Did you observe previous injuries?”
“No.”
“Unusual behavior?”
I thought carefully.
Emma had become clingier.
She cried when I left.
She asked me repeatedly what time I would return.
She sometimes hid food in her pockets.
I had assumed she was going through a phase.
My chest tightened.
“She started asking me if I could sleep here.”
Ms. Hart wrote it down.
“She ever explain why?”
“No.”
“Did Vanessa interfere with your access to Emma?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She began giving me more errands outside the house. Dry cleaning. Shopping. Pharmacy runs.”
“When?”
I realized the answer.
“About two months ago.”
Lucas, sitting nearby, looked up.
“That’s when it got worse.”
Ms. Hart turned.
“What got worse?”
He hugged his knees.
“Mom got mad whenever Emma wanted Rosa.”
I closed my eyes.
I remembered Vanessa calling Emma spoiled.
Needy.
Manipulative.
Words adults sometimes used to make a child’s fear sound like bad behavior.
Ms. Hart looked at me.
“Did Mrs. Whitmore ever express resentment toward Emma?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She complained that Daniel treated Emma differently.”
Lucas whispered, “She said Emma always won.”
The room went quiet.
Ms. Hart asked, “Won what?”
Lucas shrugged.
“Everything.”
Daniel returned at one thirty in the morning.
His tie was gone.
His face looked hollow.
Lucas ran to him.
Daniel caught him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Lucas whispered, “Are you mad?”
Daniel pulled back.
“At you?”
Lucas nodded.
Daniel looked horrified.
“No.”
“I recorded Mom.”
“I know.”
“I didn’t tell you.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I should have seen it.”
Lucas shook his head.
“She hid it from you.”
“So did you.”
Lucas looked down.
Daniel immediately softened.
“That came out wrong.”
“I was scared.”
“I know.”
Daniel put his forehead against Lucas’s.
“You never have to protect me from the truth.”
Lucas cried.
Daniel held him.
Ms. Hart gave them a moment.
Then she approached.
“Mr. Whitmore, we need to discuss Lucas’s placement.”
Daniel straightened.
“He stays with me.”
“It may not be that simple.”
“He has lived with me since he was five.”
“I understand.”
“I am his father.”
“You are his stepfather.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
Ms. Hart continued gently.
“Because Vanessa is his legal parent and has been detained, we have to follow procedure.”
Lucas went rigid.
Daniel looked at him.
Then back at Ms. Hart.
“What procedure?”
“We need to determine whether there are other relatives available.”
Lucas grabbed Daniel’s hand.
“No.”
Ms. Hart looked at him sympathetically.
“Lucas—”
“No.”
His breathing accelerated.
“I’m not leaving Dad.”
Daniel wrapped an arm around him.
“You’re not alone.”
Lucas shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
He looked at Ms. Hart.
Then at me.
May you like
Then he said the sentence that opened an entirely new part of the nightmare.
“My mom told me if I ever told anyone what she did, she’d send me away where Dad could never find me.”
