[CHAPTER 1]

The first sound I heard was not crying.

It was scratching.

Three weak little scrapes from inside the stainless-steel refrigerator.

I froze in the middle of the Whitmores’ kitchen with a grocery bag still hanging from my wrist.

Then I heard a tiny voice.

“Rosa?”

My blood turned cold.

“Emma?”

Another scrape.

“Please.”

I dropped the groceries.

A carton of eggs hit the floor, but I barely noticed.

I ran to the refrigerator and grabbed the handle.

The door resisted for half a second because something had been pushed against it from the outside.

I yanked harder.

A chair leg shifted across the tile.

Then the door opened.

Cold air poured over my hands.

Four-year-old Emma Whitmore stood inside the lower section of the oversized refrigerator, squeezed beside trays and bottles that had been cleared away to make room for her.

Her lips were pale.

Her blonde hair was damp.

She was shaking so violently that her teeth clicked.

For one terrible second, she only stared at me.

Then she collapsed forward.

I caught her.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

I wrapped both arms around her and pulled her against my chest.

She was freezing.

Not cool.

Freezing.

Her fingers dug into my blouse.

“Don’t close it,” she sobbed.

“I won’t.”

“Please don’t close it again.”

“I won’t. I promise.”

I kicked the refrigerator door wider and carried her away from it.

That was when Vanessa entered the kitchen.

She stopped.

Her expression changed immediately.

Not shock.

Not fear.

Calculation.

“What are you doing?” she demanded.

I stared at her.

“What am I doing?”

Emma whimpered and buried her face against my shoulder.

Vanessa’s eyes moved from Emma to the open refrigerator.

Then to the chair lying sideways on the floor.

Her face hardened.

“What did you do to her?”

For a moment, I honestly thought I had misunderstood.

Then she pointed at me.

“Put her down.”

“No.”

“You have no right to hold her after this.”

My heart started pounding harder.

“After what?”

“You know exactly what.”

I stepped backward.

Emma clung tighter.

Vanessa moved toward me.

“I came downstairs and found you pulling her out of the refrigerator.”

“Yes, because she was trapped inside.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

I almost laughed from disbelief.

But Emma was trembling against me, and nothing felt funny.

“Vanessa, she could have died.”

“Stop being dramatic.”

That sentence frightened me more than her shouting.

I looked down at Emma.

Her tiny arms were covered in goosebumps.

“Who put you inside, sweetheart?”

Emma’s body went rigid.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Don’t question her.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why?”

“Because she is upset.”

“Exactly.”

“I said stop.”

Her voice sharpened.

Emma began crying harder.

Then Vanessa did something I will never forget.

She reached for Emma.

My body reacted before my mind did.

I turned away and blocked her.

“Don’t touch her.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“How dare you?”

“I’m warming her up. Back away.”

“You work for me.”

“I work for this family.”

“You are the nanny.”

“And she is a four-year-old child who was locked inside a refrigerator.”

Vanessa raised her voice.

“You did this!”

Footsteps thundered from the hallway.

Daniel appeared.

His suit jacket was still on.

His car keys were in his hand.

He had apparently come home earlier than expected.

He stopped when he saw us.

“What happened?”

Vanessa rushed toward him.

“Thank God.”

She grabbed his arm.

“I caught Rosa doing something to Emma.”

Daniel’s face drained.

His eyes moved to me.

Then Emma.

Then the open refrigerator.

“What?”

Vanessa spoke fast.

“She had Emma in there.”

“No.”

I could barely believe what I was hearing.

“She locked her inside and then pretended to rescue her.”

“That is a lie.”

Daniel looked between us.

“Everybody stop.”

Emma was crying so hard she could barely breathe.

Daniel approached.

“Emma.”

She looked at him.

“Daddy.”

His expression broke.

He reached for her.

I gave her to him carefully.

The moment she entered his arms, she wrapped herself around his neck.

“She’s freezing,” he whispered.

“Yes.”

He looked toward the refrigerator.

Then toward Vanessa.

“What happened?”

Vanessa answered first.

“I already told you.”

Daniel looked at me.

I forced myself to stay calm.

“I came into the kitchen. I heard scratching from the refrigerator. A chair had been pushed against the door. I moved it and found Emma inside.”

“She’s lying,” Vanessa snapped.

Daniel closed his eyes for one second.

He had not seen what happened.

That was the problem.

He had entered at the worst possible moment.

Vanessa was his wife.

I was his employee.

And I knew exactly what that looked like.

Then another voice came from the hallway.

“Dad.”

We all turned.

Lucas stood there.

Eleven years old.

Thin shoulders.

Messy brown hair.

Vanessa’s biological son from her first marriage.

He looked terrified.

But he was holding his phone.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Lucas, go upstairs.”

He didn’t move.

“Now.”

“Dad needs to see this.”

Daniel stared at him.

“See what?”

Lucas walked forward.

His hands shook so badly that the phone nearly slipped.

Vanessa lunged toward him.

“Give me that.”

Lucas stepped behind Daniel.

“No.”

The room went completely silent.

Daniel held out his hand.

“Lucas.”

Lucas gave him the phone.

“Play the newest video.”

Vanessa whispered his name.

It sounded like a warning.

Lucas looked at the floor.

Daniel pressed play.

I watched his face.

At first, confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then horror.

The video showed the kitchen.

Emma stood beside the refrigerator.

Vanessa was beside her.

Her voice came through the speaker.

“If you’re going to act like a baby, you can sit somewhere cold until you learn.”

Emma cried.

“No.”

Then Vanessa opened the refrigerator.

My stomach turned.

Daniel stopped breathing.

On the screen, Vanessa lifted Emma and pushed her inside.

Emma screamed.

Vanessa closed the door.

Then she dragged a chair in front of it.

The recording continued.

Vanessa walked away.

Daniel lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa looked at Lucas.

I had never seen hatred move across a mother’s face so clearly.

“You recorded me?”

Lucas backed away.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Play it again.”

Vanessa immediately moved forward.

“No.”

May you like

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

“What?”
