[CHAPTER 2]

Daniel’s voice was so quiet that it frightened me.

“What did you just say?”

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Daniel looked down at Lucas’s phone.

Then he pressed play again.

Emma’s sobbing filled the kitchen.

I wanted him to stop.

I wanted to cover Emma’s ears.

But Daniel needed to hear every second.

So did Vanessa.

The video showed her pushing Emma inside.

Closing the door.

Dragging the chair.

Walking away.

The recording continued for nearly two minutes after Vanessa left the kitchen.

Lucas had apparently hidden behind the doorway.

His breathing could be heard on the video.

Fast.

Panicked.

Then his whisper.

“Oh my God.”

Daniel stopped the recording.

He looked at Lucas.

“How long?”

Lucas swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

“How long was she inside?”

“I started recording before Mom put her in.”

Vanessa snapped, “Stop calling me that if you’re going to betray me.”

Daniel turned on her.

“Do not speak to him.”

“He is my son.”

“And Emma is my daughter.”

Vanessa stepped back.

For the first time, I saw fear replace anger.

Daniel looked at me.

“Rosa, call 911.”

Vanessa’s head jerked toward him.

“You cannot be serious.”

I already had my phone out.

Daniel’s eyes stayed on her.

“I have never been more serious in my life.”

Emma began trembling again.

I took her from Daniel while he pulled off his suit jacket and wrapped it around her legs.

The dispatcher answered.

I explained that a four-year-old child had been found locked inside a refrigerator.

The dispatcher’s tone changed instantly.

She asked if Emma was conscious.

Yes.

Breathing normally?

Mostly.

Any blue lips?

Pale, but not blue.

Was the person who put her inside still present?

I looked at Vanessa.

“Yes.”

Vanessa stared at me like she wanted to tear the phone from my hand.

The dispatcher told us not to let Emma walk around and not to warm her too quickly.

An ambulance and police were coming.

Daniel crouched in front of Lucas.

“Why were you recording?”

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

That one glance changed everything.

Daniel noticed.

So did I.

“Lucas?”

The boy’s eyes filled.

“Because I thought she might do something.”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“This is insane.”

Daniel ignored her.

“Why did you think that?”

Lucas rubbed his sleeve across his face.

“Because she was mad.”

“She gets mad all the time.”

“I know.”

There was something in his voice.

Not childish annoyance.

Experience.

Daniel slowly stood.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa stepped in.

“It means he is eleven and dramatic.”

Lucas flinched.

Daniel saw it.

“Lucas, look at me.”

The boy did.

“Has something like this happened before?”

Lucas hesitated.

Vanessa said his name.

Daniel raised one hand.

“Do not answer for him.”

Lucas stared at the floor.

“Not the refrigerator.”

My stomach tightened.

Daniel whispered, “What happened before?”

Lucas started crying.

That was his answer before the words came.

“She locked Emma in the laundry room once.”

Vanessa shouted, “That was five minutes!”

Emma buried her face against me.

Daniel turned white.

“You locked my daughter in a room?”

“She was having a tantrum.”

Lucas spoke again.

“And the pantry.”

Vanessa spun around.

“Enough.”

“And she made her stand outside.”

“Lucas!”

“It was raining.”

Daniel stepped toward Vanessa.

She backed up.

“How long?”

“I don’t know what he is talking about.”

Lucas raised his head.

“You watched from the window.”

Vanessa stared at him.

The front doorbell rang.

Nobody moved.

Then someone knocked hard.

“Police!”

I carried Emma toward the living room.

Daniel opened the door.

Two officers entered with paramedics behind them.

Everything became movement.

Questions.

Medical equipment.

A thermal blanket.

Emma crying when a paramedic touched her hand.

Daniel trying to answer questions and realizing how little he actually knew.

One officer separated Vanessa from the rest of us.

Another asked me exactly what I had seen.

I told the truth.

Then he asked about the video.

Lucas handed over his phone.

Vanessa immediately objected.

“He is a minor.”

The officer looked at Daniel.

“Is Mr. Whitmore his legal guardian?”

Vanessa answered.

“No.”

That landed heavily.

Daniel had raised Lucas for six years.

I knew Lucas called him Dad.

But legally, Vanessa was right.

Daniel was his stepfather.

Lucas’s biological father had died three years earlier.

Daniel had no automatic parental rights.

Vanessa seemed to remember that at the same moment.

Her confidence returned slightly.

“Lucas comes with me.”

Lucas’s face went gray.

“No.”

Vanessa ignored him.

“He is my son. He is not staying here.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“He is not going anywhere with you tonight.”

“You cannot stop me.”

An officer moved between them.

“Ma’am, nobody is leaving until we finish sorting this out.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“This family is being manipulated by an employee.”

The officer looked toward me.

Then toward Emma under the thermal blanket.

Then toward the video on Lucas’s phone.

“I don’t think your employee is your biggest problem right now.”

The paramedics decided Emma should be taken to the hospital.

Daniel immediately went with her.

Before leaving, he stopped beside Lucas.

“I’ll come back.”

Lucas whispered, “Promise?”

Daniel put both hands on his shoulders.

“I promise.”

Vanessa watched them.

Her expression was impossible to read.

Then Daniel looked at me.

“Stay with him.”

I nodded.

“I will.”

Daniel left with Emma.

The ambulance doors closed outside.

The kitchen suddenly felt too large.

Too bright.

Too cold.

An officer asked Vanessa to sit.

Instead, she looked directly at Lucas.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.”

Lucas trembled.

I moved closer to him.

Vanessa continued.

“You just destroyed your family.”

Lucas looked at her through tears.

“No.”

His voice was barely audible.

“You did.”

The officer stepped between them.

“Mrs. Whitmore, that is enough.”

Vanessa finally sat down.

Lucas leaned against me.

His whole body shook.

I put an arm around him.

“You were brave.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t understand.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He glanced at Vanessa.

May you like

Then whispered something that made every hair on my arms rise.

“That wasn’t the first video.”
