Chapter 6: The Woman Standing at Our Door
The door handle moved again.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like the person outside wasn’t trying to break in.
Like she knew she didn’t have to.
She knew eventually someone would open it.
Emma’s fingers tightened around mine.
“Daddy…”
I looked down at her.
Her face was pale.
The same fear I had seen in the closet.
The same fear no child should ever carry.
“Go upstairs,” I whispered.
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Emma.””
“I don’t want to leave you.””
My heart broke.
Because she wasn’t saying she wanted to stay.
She was saying she was afraid something would happen if she wasn’t there.
I knelt down.
“Listen to me.””
I held both of her shoulders gently.
“You are the safest person in this house.””
She looked confused.
“You are?””
“Yes.””
“Then why am I scared?””
That question cut deeper than anything else.
Because I didn’t have an answer.
I should have.
I was her father.
I was supposed to know how to fix fear.
But some wounds don’t come with instructions.
“Because sometimes adults make mistakes,” I said quietly.
Emma looked toward the door.
“Is that lady bad?””
I glanced at Claire.
She looked away.
A thousand emotions crossed her face.
Fear.
Regret.
Guilt.
I turned back to Emma.
“I don’t know.””
It was the truth.
And maybe the first honest thing I had said all night.
“But I know this,” I continued.
“You don’t have to be brave for anyone.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t?””
“No.””
I kissed her forehead.
“Go upstairs and lock your door.””
“But—”
“I’ll be right behind you.””
She hesitated.
Then she ran upstairs.
I waited until I heard her bedroom door close.
Then I turned toward Claire.
“You’re going to tell me everything.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“I will.””
“Before I open that door.””
She swallowed.
“Okay.””
The knocking came again.
Three times.
Claire flinched.
I had never seen her afraid before.
Not really.
She had cried.
She had been hurt.
She had been angry.
But this was different.
This was terror.
“Claire,” I said.
“What?””
“Why are you afraid of your own sister?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I know what she’s capable of.””
I stared at her.
“What happened after she left?””
Claire looked at the door.
“She didn’t just leave.””
“What does that mean?””
“She disappeared after Rachel stopped speaking to her.””
“Why?””
“Because Rachel found out something.””
“What?””
Claire’s lips trembled.
“Lily had been following her.””
The words hung in the air.
“Following her?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
“I don’t know.””
“How do you not know?””
“Because Rachel didn’t tell me everything.””
I stepped closer.
“You just told me Rachel trusted you.””
“She did.””
“Then why are there still secrets?””
Claire looked down.
“Because Rachel was protecting people.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Everyone.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not an answer.””
Claire sighed.
“She protected Lily.””
“After what Lily said?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Lily was sick.””
I felt anger rise.
“Being hurt doesn’t give someone permission to hurt others.””
Claire nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why are you making excuses?””
“I’m not.””
She looked toward the stairs.
“I’m explaining.””
The knocking stopped.
That was somehow worse.
The silence felt like the person outside was listening.
Waiting.
“Claire.””
She took a breath.
“After Rachel lost the baby, Lily became obsessed.””
“With Rachel?””
“With everything Rachel had.””
I frowned.
“She wanted her life?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because Lily believed Rachel didn’t deserve it.””
I felt a chill.
“And what does that have to do with Emma?””
Claire’s face broke.
“Everything.””
Before I could ask more, a voice came from outside.
A woman’s voice.
Soft.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Daniel?””
My blood froze.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
I looked at the door.
“How does she know my name?””
Claire didn’t answer.
The voice came again.
“Daniel Morgan?””
The way she said my full name felt wrong.
Like she had practiced it.
“I know you’re in there.””
I looked at Claire.
She was shaking.
“Who is she?””
Claire whispered:
“My sister.””
The woman outside laughed quietly.
Not loudly.
Not crazily.
Just enough to make my skin crawl.
“Claire,” she called.
“You always were dramatic.””
Claire stepped back.
The voice continued.
“You told him, didn’t you?””
My eyes moved to Claire.
“What did she mean?””
Claire looked sick.
“She knows.””
“Knows what?””
The woman outside answered for her.
“Knows that Rachel wasn’t the perfect angel you made her believe.””
My jaw tightened.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m the person who knew your wife before you did.””
Claire whispered:
“Don’t listen to her.””
But the woman outside continued.
“Rachel lied to you, Daniel.””
I moved toward the door.
“About what?””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Daniel, no.””
The woman laughed softly.
“There she is.””
A pause.
“The protector.””
Claire’s face went pale.
The woman continued.
“She always wanted to save Rachel.””
Her voice became sharper.
“But she never told you what Rachel did to me.””
I looked at Claire.
“What is she talking about?””
Claire didn’t answer.
That scared me.
Because Claire always had something to say.
The woman outside spoke again.
“Daniel, you deserve the truth.””
I stepped closer to the door.
“What truth?””
“Your wife didn’t abandon me.””
Silence.
“She destroyed my life.””
I looked at Claire.
“Is that true?””
Her eyes filled.
“No.””
The woman outside laughed.
“She says no.””
Then came a sound.
Something slid under the door.
A folded piece of paper.
I picked it up.
Claire whispered:
“Don’t.””
But I unfolded it.
It was a letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
My heart stopped.
Rachel’s handwriting.
I read the first line.
*Lily, I am sorry, but I can no longer allow you near my daughter.*
My breathing changed.
I kept reading.
*You have convinced yourself that loving Emma means protecting her from me. But love does not look like fear.*
My hands shook.
There was more.
*If you come near my family again, I will do whatever I need to do to keep Emma safe.*
I looked up.
The woman outside spoke softly.
“She chose Claire over me.””
Claire whispered:
“That’s not what happened.””
The woman ignored her.
“She made everyone believe I was dangerous.””
I looked at Claire.
“Was she?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation scared me.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.””
The woman outside laughed.
A sad sound.
“See?””
She knocked once.
“Even now, she thinks she’s protecting everyone.””
I looked back at the letter.
Something bothered me.
The paper.
The handwriting.
The words.
Rachel wrote this.
But something was missing.
A signature.
There was no name at the bottom.
Just an empty space.
“Why isn’t this signed?””
The voice outside went silent.
Claire looked at the letter.
Her face changed.
“I…”
“What?””
She stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“This isn’t the original.””
My stomach dropped.
“What do you mean?””
Claire looked toward the door.
“Lily has a copy.””
“Of Rachel’s letter?””
“Yes.””
“Then where is the original?””
Claire’s face became terrified.
Because she already knew the answer.
“She took it.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
The woman outside whispered:
“Not years ago.””
A pause.
“Today.””
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire house fell into darkness.
Emma screamed upstairs.
“Daddy!””
I ran toward the stairs.
Behind me, I heard Claire gasp.
And then the front door opened.
Not forced.
Not broken.
Unlocked.
Someone had a key.
I turned around.
A woman stood in the doorway.
She looked exactly like Rachel.
Same eyes.
Same face.
But there was something missing.
The warmth.
The kindness.
The love.
She looked past me.
Straight toward the stairs.
Toward Emma.
And she whispered:
“My sister promised me I could have a daughter someday.””
My blood turned cold.
May you like
Then Lily smiled.
“And Rachel took that away from me.””
