Chapter 14: The Person Who Wanted Rachel Silent
The sentence stayed on the page.
*Someone close to Rachel was poisoning her treatment.*
I read it again.
And again.
My brain searched for another explanation.
A mistake.
A misunderstanding.
A lie.
Anything.
Anything except the possibility that someone I knew had been slowly destroying the woman I loved.
“Daniel?””
Claire’s voice sounded far away.
I looked up.
“Who had access?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was worse than any accusation.
Because it meant the answer was complicated.
Michael looked at the letter.
“Dr. Cole believed someone close to Rachel was manipulating her medication.””
“Believed?””
I stood.
“You mean he wasn’t sure?””
Michael shook his head.
“He was investigating.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Investigating?””
I pointed toward the letter.
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Michael’s face hardened.
“Because Rachel told him not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She didn’t trust anyone.””
My anger turned into confusion.
“Why would Rachel tell him not to tell me?””
Michael looked down.
“Because she was protecting you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I walked away from the table.
“No.””
Everyone kept using those words.
Protecting you.
Keeping you safe.
Saving you pain.
But all it did was leave me standing in the middle of a disaster I could have prevented.
“She was my wife.””
Nobody argued.
“She was the mother of my daughter.””
Silence.
“She deserved better than everyone deciding for her.””
Michael nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
The agreement hurt more than an argument.
Because I didn’t want to be right.
I wanted Rachel back.
I wanted one more conversation.
One more chance to tell her:
You didn’t have to carry this alone.
“Who knew about the treatment?””
Michael looked at Claire.
Then away.
My stomach tightened.
“Why did you look at her?””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“Daniel.””
“I asked a question.””
She looked devastated.
“I don’t know.””
Michael spoke quietly.
“There was someone else.””
I turned.
“Who?””
“Rachel’s assistant.””
“Assistant?””
“Yes.””
“Rachel had an assistant?””
Michael nodded.
“When she was working.””
I frowned.
“Why don’t I know this?””
Claire whispered:
“Because she stopped working after she got sick.””
Again.
Another hidden piece.
Another thing I didn’t know.
“Name.””
Michael answered.
“Anna Blake.””
The name meant nothing.
“Where is she?””
Michael hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
That answer was becoming too common.
Everyone knew something.
Nobody knew enough.
Then I noticed something.
A detail I had ignored.
The letter.
Dr. Cole’s letter.
I picked it up again.
At the bottom was a date.
Two days before Rachel died.
My eyes narrowed.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at me.
“Dr. Cole wrote this two days before Rachel died.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“But Rachel died three years ago.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did nobody tell me?””
Michael looked at the floor.
“Because the letter disappeared.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Dr. Cole gave it to someone.””
“Who?””
Michael didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Because the look on his face told me.
I already knew.
“Rachel.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt cold.
“Rachel had this?””
“She did.””
“Then why didn’t she give it to me?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because she found out who was involved.””
The room became silent.
“Who?””
Michael’s expression was filled with regret.
“She was afraid telling you would put Emma in danger.””
My heart stopped.
“Emma?””
“Yes.””
I looked upstairs.
At my daughter’s room.
The child who had already suffered enough.
“What does Emma have to do with this?””
Michael answered slowly.
“Rachel discovered the person hurting her wasn’t after money.””
“Then what?””
“She wanted something else.””
“What?””
Michael looked at Claire.
Again.
That look.
I hated it.
“Stop looking at her.””
Michael’s eyes returned to me.
“I’m not accusing Claire.””
“Then what are you saying?””
“I’m saying Rachel believed jealousy was involved.””
The word landed heavily.
Jealousy.
A word I had heard too many times.
A pattern I couldn’t ignore.
Claire.
Lily.
Now someone else.
“Who was jealous of Rachel?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Because the answer was already in the room.
Claire stood suddenly.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“No.””
Her face was pale.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
I said nothing.
“I didn’t do this.””
“I didn’t say you did.””
“But you’re thinking it.””
I looked at her.
“Claire.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was jealous of Rachel.””
The confession was quiet.
“But I never wanted her dead.””
Nobody spoke.
“I wanted her life.””
Her voice broke.
“Not her suffering.””
I believed that.
And somehow that made everything worse.
Because sometimes people don’t need to be evil to cause damage.
Sometimes they just need to be broken.
Michael looked at Claire.
“There was someone else who wanted Rachel’s life.””
I turned.
“Who?””
Michael reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small notebook.
“I found this in Rachel’s things.””
I took it.
Inside were pages of handwriting.
Rachel’s handwriting.
Dates.
Names.
Notes.
Then I saw one sentence.
*I know who is helping him.*
My heart started racing.
“Helping who?””
Michael pointed.
“Dr. Cole.””
I turned the page.
The next line was written darker.
Like Rachel pressed the pen harder.
*I never thought she would betray me.*
I looked up.
“Who?””
Michael’s face changed.
I did.
*She said she loved me. She said she wanted to protect Emma. But love that requires someone else to disappear is not love.*
My hands shook.
The next sentence was the one that destroyed me.
*I was wrong to bring her into our lives.*
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
I kept reading.
*If anything happens to me, don’t blame yourself. Don’t blame Emma. The person responsible is someone who has spent years trying to become the only person you need.*
My blood ran cold.
Because I knew those words.
I knew exactly what Rachel meant.
Someone trying to become the only person you need.
Someone trying to replace everyone else.
Someone who believed love meant being chosen above all.
I looked at Claire.
She was crying.
But not because she was guilty.
Because she finally understood.
“Who is it?””
Michael whispered:
“Rachel wrote a name.””
I turned the page.
The next line was hidden beneath a torn piece of paper.
Someone had ripped it out.
Only the first letter remained.
A single handwritten mark.
*A.*
Anna.
My heart pounded.
“Anna Blake.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“The assistant.””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
Michael looked at me.
“She disappeared the same week Rachel died.””
I stared.
Another person gone.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
A picture loaded.
A woman.
Standing outside a house.
Holding a folder.
I recognized her immediately.
Anna Blake.
Below the picture was a message.
*You finally found the right person to blame.*
Then another message appeared.
*But before you accuse me, ask Claire why Rachel was afraid of her.*
My breath stopped.
I looked up.
Claire was staring at my phone.
Her face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“Claire?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Slowly, she whispered:
“I know her.””
The room went silent.
I stood.
“What?””
Claire looked at the picture.
Then at me.
Her voice barely existed.
“Anna wasn’t Rachel’s assistant.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Then who was she?””
Claire closed her eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
“She was the woman who raised me.””
