Chapter 5: The Sister Rachel Tried to Protect

I kept staring at the photograph.

Two women.

Two faces that carried the same eyes.

The same smile.

The same familiar sadness.

I knew Rachel better than anyone.

At least, I believed I did.

But the woman standing beside her in that picture looked like a missing chapter from a book I had spent years reading.

A chapter someone had torn out.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Claire looked at the photograph.

“Her name is Lily.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way Claire said it told me everything.

This wasn’t just a name.

It was a wound.

“Rachel had a sister named Lily?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

She looked down.

“Because Rachel didn’t want you to.””

I laughed quietly.

A painful, empty sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Claire looked at me.

“What?””

“Rachel didn’t want you to know this. Rachel didn’t want you to know that.””

I pointed toward the photograph.

“How many things did my wife hide from me?””

Claire didn’t answer.

And that silence hurt.

Because it meant the answer was more than one.

I picked up the picture.

The edges were worn.

Old.

Handled many times.

Rachel had kept this.

She had carried a secret photograph of her sister while pretending Lily didn’t exist.

“Where is she now?””

Claire hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“You just said she was sent away.””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

Claire looked toward the stairs.

Toward where Emma was sleeping.

Then back at me.

“Rachel.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“Rachel made the choice.””

“No.””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds impossible.””

Claire nodded.

“Because you knew Rachel as a wife.””

She touched the photograph.

“I knew her as a sister.””

I stared at her.

“Tell me.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Rachel and Lily were close when they were young.””

“Then what happened?””

“Lily got sick.””

I waited.

“She had problems. Anger. Anxiety. She struggled after their parents died.””

I frowned.

“Rachel never told me her parents died.””

Claire gave me a sad smile.

“Daniel, Rachel didn’t tell people things that made her feel weak.””

That was true.

Rachel had a habit of carrying pain quietly.

She hated being seen as someone who needed help.

“What kind of problems?””

Claire looked uncomfortable.

“She became unpredictable.””

“That’s vague.””

“Because the truth is complicated.””

I stepped closer.

“I don’t need simple. I need the truth.””

Claire nodded.

“Lily loved Rachel. But she also resented her.””

“Why?””

“Because Rachel was the one everyone trusted.””

The words sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

I thought about Claire.

About Emma.

About this strange pattern repeating through generations.

People wanting to be chosen.

People hurting others because they felt second place.

“Lily believed Rachel had stolen her life.””

“How?””

Claire looked at the photo.

“She believed Rachel got everything.””

I frowned.

“Everything?””

“A stable future. A husband. A family.””

My heart stopped.

“A family?””

Claire nodded.

“She always wanted what Rachel had.””

I looked at the picture again.

Two sisters.

One smiling.

One watching.

And suddenly I saw something I hadn’t noticed before.

Rachel was holding Lily’s hand.

But Lily wasn’t looking at the camera.

She was looking at Rachel.

Like she was afraid to lose her.

“What happened between them?””

Claire’s expression became heavier.

“Lily found out Rachel was pregnant.””

My fingers tightened around the photo.

“Her pregnancy?””

“Yes.””

“The baby she lost?””

Claire nodded.

“She was the first person Rachel told.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another piece of Rachel’s life that I never knew.

“And Lily was happy?””

Claire looked away.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“She wasn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought Rachel was getting another thing she would never have.””

I felt sick.

“Her own child?””

“Yes.””

The same jealousy.

The same hunger to be chosen.

The same poison.

“Then Rachel lost the baby.””

“Yes.””

“And Lily?””

Claire’s face changed.

“She blamed Rachel.””

I stared.

“That makes no sense.””

“She said Rachel always had a way of making people feel sorry for her.””

My jaw tightened.

“That doesn’t sound like Lily loved her.””

Claire looked down.

“She did.””

“How can you love someone and say things like that?””

Claire was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because sometimes people love someone and still hate what that person represents.””

The sentence stayed with me.

Because it explained too much.

Claire.

Lily.

Maybe even parts of myself.

“What happened after that?””

Claire folded her arms.

“Rachel and Lily fought.””

“How bad?””

“Bad.””

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked at me.

“It means Rachel stopped answering her calls.””

“Why?””

“Because Lily said something unforgivable.””

I waited.

Claire’s voice became barely audible.

“She told Rachel that maybe losing the baby was punishment.””

The room went silent.

I felt anger rise through me.

“That’s horrible.””

“Yes.””

“How could Rachel forgive that?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“She didn’t.””

A strange sadness entered the room.

Because Rachel forgiving people had always been one of her greatest strengths.

And maybe one of her greatest weaknesses.

“What happened next?””

Claire looked at the photograph.

“Rachel cut contact.””

“And Lily?””

“She disappeared.””

“Just like that?””

Claire nodded.

“She left town.””

I stared.

“And Rachel never told me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of Lily?””

“No.””

Claire paused.

“Of what Lily might do if she came back.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Before I could respond, a small voice came from the stairs.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

Emma was standing there.

Her stuffed rabbit was pressed against her chest.

My heart immediately softened.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She looked between me and Claire.

“Who’s Lily?””

The room froze.

Claire’s face went pale.

I crouched down.

“Why do you know that name?””

Emma looked confused.

“Because Mommy said it.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“When?””

“Before she went to the hospital.””

I stood slowly.

“What did she say?””

Emma hugged the rabbit tighter.

“She told me if I ever saw a lady who looked like her…”

She stopped.

“Sweetheart?””

Emma looked at Claire.

Then back at me.

“She said I should run to Daddy.””

Every hair on my arms stood up.

Claire whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“That’s not possible.””

“Why?””

“Because Rachel never met Lily after she left.””

I turned back to Emma.

“Did Mommy say anything else?””

Emma nodded slowly.

“She said…”

Her voice became smaller.

“She said that lady would try to make me feel like I wasn’t wanted.””

The room went completely silent.

Claire stepped backward.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What is it?””

She shook her head.

“No, no, no…”

“Claire.””

She looked terrified.

“She’s here.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

Claire stared at the front window.

At the darkness outside.

Then she whispered:

“Lily.””

At that exact moment, there was a knock on the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Not rushed.

Not uncertain.

Like whoever was standing outside knew we were all awake.

Emma grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I moved in front of her.

“Stay behind me.””

The knocking came again.

Three times.

Claire looked like she couldn’t breathe.

“Daniel…”

I turned.

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“You need to understand something.””

Another knock.

“She didn’t come back because she missed Rachel.””

The door handle moved slightly.

My body went rigid.

May you like

Claire whispered:

“She came back because she believes Emma belongs to her.””
