Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden In My Own Handwriting
I stared at the document.
I couldn't blink.
I couldn't breathe.
I couldn't understand how my own signature could exist on a paper I had never seen before.
The words at the bottom seemed to move.
*Permanent custody transfer agreement.*
My name.
My handwriting.
My signature.
But not my memory.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Nobody moved.
“No.””
I picked up the document with shaking hands.
“This isn't real.””
Mark looked at me.
“Evelyn.””
“This isn't real.””
My voice grew louder.
“I would never sign this.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I believe you.””
I looked at him.
“You believe me?””
“Yes.””
“After all of this?””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
That answer hurt.
Because part of me wanted him to defend me sooner.
Before the secrets.
Before the lies.
Before I had to discover everything myself.
I looked back at the document.
“When was this signed?””
Mark hesitated.
“Three years ago.””
The same day.
The same hospital.
The same nightmare.
My stomach turned.
“What does it say?””
Mark looked at the paper.
“It says you voluntarily transferred temporary custody of Lucy.””
I swallowed.
“Temporary?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
My heart dropped.
“It says permanent.””
The room went silent.
I felt dizzy.
“Then why is Lucy with me?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the question.
If this document was real…
why had nothing happened?
Why had nobody taken my daughter?
Why had I spent three years raising her?
Then Daniel suddenly looked at the paper more closely.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed.
“The date.””
I stepped closer.
The date was printed clearly.
The same day Lucy was born.
But something was wrong.
I looked at the signature again.
Then the date.
Then the signature.
And suddenly, something clicked.
“No.””
Mark looked at me.
“What?””
I pointed.
“The signature.””
“What about it?””
“It’s wrong.””
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?””
I stared at my own name.
“Look at the ink.””
Everyone leaned closer.
“The signature is darker than the rest of the document.””
Mark nodded slowly.
“So?””
“So I didn't sign this when the rest was written.””
The room became silent.
I felt something strange.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Clarity.
Someone had taken my signature from another document.
Someone had copied it.
Someone had created a lie using my own hand.
Daniel whispered:
“Forgery.””
The word landed heavily.
Mark looked furious.
“But how?””
I closed my eyes.
And then I remembered.
The hospital.
The exhaustion.
The paperwork.
The endless forms.
The nurses asking me to sign things.
The moments when I couldn't even keep my eyes open.
My mother holding documents.
Claire standing beside my bed.
Everyone saying:
“Just sign here.””
I opened my eyes.
“They had access to my signature.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Who?””
I didn't answer.
Because we already knew.
Before anyone could speak, my phone rang.
My mother's name appeared.
I stared at the screen.
Nobody said anything.
Finally, I answered.
“Hello.””
Her voice came immediately.
“Evelyn.””
She sounded scared.
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
A pause.
“Is Mark there?””
“Yes.””
Silence.
Then:
“I knew this day would come.””
My heart tightened.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
My mother started crying.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Mom.””
“I know how it looks.””
“No.””
I looked around the room.
“Stop saying that.””
My voice broke.
“Everyone keeps saying how it looks. Nobody says what it is.””
Silence.
Then my mother whispered:
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes don't last three years.””
“I know.””
“You changed my daughter's life.””
“I know.””
“You took away her father.””
“I know.””
I swallowed hard.
“Did you try to take her away from me too?””
The silence was unbearable.
Then:
“No.””
I didn't believe how quickly she answered.
“Mom.””
“I never wanted custody of Lucy.””
“Then why did you create those documents?””
She broke down.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of Mark.””
I looked at Mark.
“He wasn't dangerous.””
My mother was quiet.
“That isn't what I believed.””
“You believed something and destroyed my family.””
“I thought I was saving you.””
“From what?””
Her voice became smaller.
“From becoming me.””
I froze.
“What?””
My mother cried.
“When I was young, I stayed with your father through everything.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with Mark?””
“Everything.””
She took a shaky breath.
“I spent my life watching women forgive men who hurt them.””
I looked down.
“And you thought I was one of them?””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“You thought I was too weak to leave.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“So you took control.””
“I wanted to make sure you and Lucy were safe.””
“But you weren't the one who got to decide.””
“I know.””
For the first time, she sounded like she truly understood.
“I know now.””
I wiped my face.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because after everything happened, you looked happy.””
“That doesn't excuse it.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“It doesn't.””
A long pause.
Then she said:
“There is something else.””
I felt exhausted.
“What now?””
“I didn't create those papers alone.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What do you mean?””
“Someone helped me.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Claire.””
I closed my eyes.
I already knew.
But hearing it still hurt.
“Why?””
My mother cried.
“Because Claire wanted Lucy.””
The words were quiet.
But they cut deep.
I looked toward the hallway.
Where my daughter slept.
My sweet little girl.
The child everyone claimed to love.
Everyone except the person who should have been protecting her innocence.
My mother continued.
“Claire was the one who found the lawyer.””
My hands tightened.
“She told me she could give Lucy a stable home if something happened to you.””
I felt sick.
“She planned this?””
“No.””
My mother sounded desperate.
“She didn't plan for you to find out.””
I laughed softly.
“So she planned everything except the part where I learned the truth?””
My mother didn't answer.
Because there was no answer.
Then Daniel suddenly moved.
He was looking out the window.
“Evelyn.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked pale.
“There's someone outside.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
He didn't answer.
I walked toward the window.
A car was parked across the street.
The headlights were off.
Someone was sitting inside.
Watching.
Mark came beside me.
His expression changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He recognized the car.
“That's Claire's car.””
My blood went cold.
“Why would she be here?””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Claire.
I opened it.
My hands trembled.
*I know you found out.*
Another message appeared.
*But you don't know the whole truth.*
Then a third.
*Ask Mark why he never told you what happened the night Lucy was born.*
I looked at Mark.
“What is she talking about?””
His face changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Mark?””
He looked away.
And that scared me more.
Because after everything I had learned…
after every lie…
after every secret…
there was still one thing nobody had told me.
“What happened that night?”” I whispered.
Mark closed his eyes.
Then said:
“Evelyn…”
His voice broke.
“The reason Claire and your mother were able to do all of this…”
He looked at Lucy's bedroom door.
“Is because I made a choice too.””
I felt my heart stop.
“What choice?””
Mark looked at me.
“The night Lucy was born…”
He swallowed.
“I agreed to something that I have regretted every day since.””
The house went silent.
And then he said the words that changed everything.
“I wasn't forced to leave.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Mark looked devastated.
“I left because I thought it was the only way to protect Lucy.””
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Because after three years of believing everyone else had stolen my family…
I was finally hearing the truth.
May you like
And it was worse than I imagined.
Mark had chosen to walk away.
