Chapter 3: The Secret From Three Years Ago
I couldn't move.
Not because I didn't want to.
Because my body had stopped listening to me.
The hallway around us blurred. The voices from the wedding reception became distant, like I was underwater.
Three years ago.
Those three words carried more weight than anything else Daniel had said that night.
Because three years ago was the year everything changed.
The year Lucy disappeared from my life.
The year I almost lost my daughter.
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened three years ago?””
My voice sounded strange.
Cold.
Almost unfamiliar.
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
That made something inside me snap.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don't get to hesitate anymore.””
“Evelyn—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Everyone keeps telling me they were protecting me. Everyone keeps saying they didn't want to hurt me. But somehow, I am always the last person to know what is happening with my own child.””
Lucy held onto my hand.
Her little fingers were trembling.
I immediately softened my voice.
“Sweetheart, Mommy is okay.””
But I wasn't.
Not even close.
Daniel looked at Lucy.
“Can we talk somewhere private?””
I laughed quietly.
“Private?””
I looked around the hallway.
“My sister already knew. You already knew. Mark knew enough to send you messages. Somehow this whole family meeting happened without me.””
My eyes burned.
“So no, Daniel. We are not hiding things anymore.””
He looked down.
For a moment, I saw the man I fell in love with.
The man who sat beside me at three in the morning when Lucy had a fever.
The man who held my hand when I signed divorce papers from Mark.
The man who promised me he would never let Lucy feel abandoned again.
But tonight, I didn't know who I was looking at.
“I need to explain,” Daniel said quietly.
“Then explain.””
He took a deep breath.
“Three years ago, Mark didn't just leave.””
My chest tightened.
“I know what happened.””
“No, you know what he told you.””
The hallway went silent.
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
She looked uncomfortable.
That alone made my stomach twist.
“Mark didn't disappear because he wanted a new life,” Daniel continued.
“Then why?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because there was a custody investigation.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“What?””
Lucy looked up at me.
I immediately lowered my voice.
“Why would there be a custody investigation?””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“Because someone reported concerns about Lucy's safety.””
My face went pale.
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
I turned slowly toward Claire.
Her eyes widened.
“Evelyn—”
“You reported him?””
Claire looked away.
That was an answer.
My heart sank.
“You reported Mark?””
“I was trying to protect Lucy.””
“You went behind my back?””
“No.””
“Yes!””
My voice echoed through the hallway.
A nearby guest stopped walking.
I didn't care.
“You didn't tell me?””
Claire crossed her arms.
“You were blinded by him.””
“By who?””
“By Mark.””
I stared at her.
“You think I didn't know what Mark was?””
Claire's expression changed.
“He was dangerous, Evelyn.””
“And you thought I didn't deserve to know that you were making decisions about my daughter?””
“I was trying to help!””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to control everything.””
Claire's face hardened.
“You always say that.””
“Because it's true.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Enough.””
I looked at him.
“No. Not enough.””
My voice cracked.
“Not even close.””
I turned back to Daniel.
“What happened after she reported him?””
He looked away.
And that was when I realized the story was worse than I imagined.
“Daniel.””
His silence answered before he did.
“Mark was investigated,” he said.
“And?””
“He was temporarily restricted from contact.””
I nodded slowly.
“And you all knew.””
“We didn't want to upset you.””
I stared at him.
“You keep saying that.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“You keep saying you didn't want to upset me. But do you know what actually upset me?””
I pointed toward Lucy.
“Finding my daughter hiding under a table because she believed she wasn't important enough to interrupt my happiness.””
Daniel's face fell.
“That wasn't because of me.””
“Wasn't it?””
He looked hurt.
“I love Lucy.””
“I know.””
My voice softened for one second.
“That’s what makes this worse.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Evelyn—”
“I trusted you with her.””
The words hurt him.
I could see that.
But they hurt me more.
Before Daniel could answer, Lucy tugged on my hand.
“Mommy?””
I looked down.
“Yes, baby?””
“Is Daddy coming back?””
My heart broke.
“Who?””
She whispered:
“My other daddy.””
I froze.
The hallway became silent.
Mark.
Her biological father.
The man who left.
The man who now suddenly wanted back into her life.
“How do you know about him?””
Lucy looked nervous.
She glanced at Claire.
Then at Daniel.
That glance told me everything.
Someone had been talking to her.
Someone had been filling her little mind with things she was too young to understand.
“Lucy,” I said gently, “who told you Daddy might come back?””
She squeezed my hand.
“Aunt Claire.””
I turned.
Claire immediately shook her head.
“I only answered her questions.””
“What questions?””
“She asked why she didn't have a daddy like other kids.””
My heart sank.
Lucy looked down.
“I saw a picture.””
“What picture?””
Claire remained silent.
I looked at her.
“What picture?””
Finally, she said:
“The one Mark sent.””
Daniel looked angry.
“Claire.””
“What?”” Claire snapped.
“She deserves to know the truth eventually.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“She is four years old.””
“She knows more than you think.””
“No.””
I knelt beside Lucy.
“She knows she is loved.””
Lucy looked at me.
But her eyes were full of confusion.
“Mommy?””
“Yes?””
“Did my real daddy leave because he didn't want me?””
The question destroyed me.
I pulled her into my arms.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“No, baby.””
“Then why did he go?””
I looked at Daniel.
I looked at Claire.
I looked at the people who had held this secret.
And I realized something.
Everyone had an explanation.
Everyone had a reason.
But nobody had protected the one person who needed protecting.
My daughter.
I stood up.
“I want to see the messages.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“The messages Mark sent you.””
“Evelyn—”
“Now.””
He looked at me.
I had never spoken to him like that before.
Maybe because I had never been this hurt before.
Slowly, he pulled out his phone.
He unlocked it.
Then handed it to me.
My hands shook as I read the conversation.
The first message was from early that morning.
*Daniel, we need to talk about Lucy.*
The next one came ten minutes later.
*I know Evelyn never told you everything.*
My breathing became uneven.
Then another message.
*Ask her why Lucy wasn't with her the day I lost custody.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel said nothing.
I scrolled further.
Another message appeared.
This one had been sent only an hour before the ceremony.
*You married her today, but you still don't know the truth.*
My fingers froze.
Then I saw the final message.
The one that made my entire body go cold.
*Ask Evelyn what happened in the hospital room the night Lucy was born.*
I stopped breathing.
Because that was impossible.
Nobody knew about that.
Nobody except me.
And one other person.
A person who had promised to take the secret to the grave.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
“Daniel.””
His face was pale.
“What?””
I swallowed.
“Who else knows about the night Lucy was born?””
Before he could answer, the ballroom doors opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Tired.
With the same gray eyes Lucy had.
My daughter gasped.
“Mommy…”
I couldn't move.
Because after three years of silence…
Mark Carter had returned.
And the first thing he said was not hello.
May you like
It was:
“Evelyn, you need to tell her the truth before it's too late.””
