Chapter 8: The Person Who Wanted My Daughter
I don't remember leaving my mother's house.
I remember standing there.
I remember the folder in my hands.
I remember my mother crying.
I remember the words Daniel had spoken through the phone.
*Your sister.*
After that, everything became a blur.
Because there was one question screaming louder than everything else.
Why?
Why would Claire want temporary guardianship of my daughter?
Why would my own sister sign anything involving Lucy?
Why had she spent years pretending to love her while secretly trying to control her life?
By the time I reached my house, the sun was beginning to rise.
The wedding decorations were still everywhere.
Flowers sat on the front steps.
A few cars from the guests remained parked outside.
It looked beautiful.
Like the beginning of a new life.
But I knew better now.
Beautiful things could hide ugly truths.
I opened the front door.
The first person I saw was Daniel.
He was standing in the living room.
And beside him was Mark.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Mark stood.
“I didn't want to come here like this.””
I looked at him.
“You brought evidence about my family to my house after my wedding.””
His expression tightened.
“I know how it looks.””
“Do you?””
I dropped the folder onto the table.
“Because I don't think any of us know what anything looks like anymore.””
Mark glanced at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“I found the documents.””
“Where?””
“From the lawyer who handled the original custody case.””
My stomach tightened.
“What custody case?””
Mark looked surprised.
“You don't know?””
I felt my anger rise.
“No.””
He looked down.
“That's what I was afraid of.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Evelyn, let him explain.””
I turned.
“You knew about this too?””
Daniel looked guilty.
“I knew there were legal documents.””
“Which ones?””
He hesitated.
“Not all of them.””
I closed my eyes.
Everyone had pieces.
Everyone except me.
“Fine.””
I looked at Mark.
“Tell me.””
He nodded slowly.
“After Lucy was born, your mother contacted an attorney.””
I crossed my arms.
“Because she wanted me to leave Mark.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
“She filed emergency paperwork.””
My heart pounded.
“Against you?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“For you.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She claimed you were exhausted, emotionally unstable, and unable to make decisions after giving birth.””
I felt like someone had punched me.
“She said that?””
Mark nodded.
“She told the court she was protecting you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone loves that word.””
Mark looked at me sadly.
“Evelyn, I fought it.””
I stared.
“You fought it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't I know?””
He looked away.
“Because Claire told me you didn't want to see me.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“She said you had chosen your family over me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She showed me messages.””
“What messages?””
“She showed me texts supposedly from you.””
My breathing stopped.
“What did they say?””
Mark swallowed.
“That you regretted marrying me.””
I stared at him.
“That I wanted you gone.””
My hands went cold.
“I never wrote that.””
“I know that now.””
“Why?””
“Because I finally got access to the original phone records.””
The room became silent.
Mark reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
Inside were printed pages.
He placed them on the table.
I picked them up.
My eyes scanned the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
They were messages.
From my phone number.
Sent to Mark.
But the dates were strange.
I looked closer.
The messages had been sent while I was in the hospital.
While I was recovering after giving birth.
Impossible.
I looked at Daniel.
“Someone used my phone.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
The truth was becoming impossible to ignore.
Claire.
She had access.
She had been with me constantly.
She had held my phone.
She had answered messages.
She had told people she was helping.
But she had been controlling the story.
“She wanted Mark gone,” I whispered.
Mark nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Claire.
Everyone saw the name.
Nobody moved.
The room felt frozen.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
Silence.
Then Claire spoke.
“Evelyn.””
Her voice sounded different.
Not the confident voice from the wedding.
Not the voice of someone who believed she was right.
This sounded scared.
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
A pause.
“With Mark?””
I didn't answer.
She knew.
“You need to understand something.””
I laughed softly.
“No.””
“What?””
“I've spent years understanding everyone else.””
My voice shook.
“Understanding why you lied. Understanding why Mom lied. Understanding why Daniel hid things.””
I looked around the room.
“But nobody ever tried to understand me.””
Claire was silent.
Then:
“I was trying to protect Lucy.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was again.
The same excuse.
“No, Claire.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You were trying to own her.””
The silence afterward was immediate.
And telling.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“That’s insane.””
“Is it?””
I looked at the documents.
“The guardianship papers.””
The line went quiet.
“You know about those?””
“Yes.””
A long pause.
Then Claire whispered:
“Who told you?””
I felt something cold move through me.
Not denial.
Not shock.
Fear.
“You're not even surprised.””
“Evelyn—”
“Why did you sign them?””
She didn't answer.
“Why?””
Finally, her voice broke.
“Because you weren't thinking clearly.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You were depressed after Lucy was born.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
“You were exhausted.””
“No.””
“You were scared.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“And you decided you should raise my daughter?””
“No.””
“Then explain.””
Claire's breathing changed.
“I was going to help.””
“How?””
“By becoming Lucy's legal guardian until you were better.””
I stared.
“You thought I was unfit?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Silence.
Then she said something I would never forget.
“Because I knew Mark would leave eventually.””
I looked at Mark.
His face had gone pale.
Claire continued.
“And when he left, I knew Lucy would need someone stable.””
My voice dropped.
“You mean you.””
“Yes.””
The answer was almost a whisper.
I felt sick.
“You wanted my daughter.””
“No.””
“You did.””
“I loved her.””
“She is not a puppy you rescue.””
Claire started crying.
“I couldn't have children, Evelyn.””
The sentence stopped me.
For a second.
Only a second.
Because I understood pain.
I understood wanting something you couldn't have.
But pain did not give someone permission to steal.
“You never told me.””
“I was ashamed.””
“So you decided Lucy could fill that hole?””
“No.””
“Then why did you tell her I had a new family?””
Claire went silent.
That was the answer.
She had no excuse.
“Claire.””
Her voice trembled.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
My eyes filled with tears.
“You made my four-year-old daughter hide under a table.””
“I didn't mean for that to happen.””
“But it did.””
Silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“There is something else you need to know.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“I didn't tell you everything about the night Lucy was born.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“What else?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“The guardianship papers weren't the only documents I signed.””
I gripped the phone.
“What did you sign?””
Her voice dropped.
“A document from the hospital.””
My blood ran cold.
“What kind of document?””
“The one that changed Lucy's birth record.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Mark.
Then Daniel.
Then the folder on the table.
“What are you saying?””
Claire whispered:
“Evelyn…”
Her voice cracked.
“Lucy wasn't only separated from Mark that night.””
I couldn't breathe.
“What else?””
A long pause.
Then Claire said:
“She was almost taken away from you too.””
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
“What?””
“I didn't know it would go that far.””
“Claire.””
“I swear.””
“Who tried to take her?””
Another pause.
And then Claire said the name that made my entire world collapse.
“Your mother.””
I looked at the woman who had raised me.
The woman who claimed she protected me.
The woman who had cried in front of me hours earlier.
And for the first time, I wondered if she had been protecting me…
or protecting the secret she created.
Then Mark picked up another document from the table.
His face was full of fear.
“Evelyn.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He held up the paper.
“This isn't over.””
“What do you mean?””
He turned the document around.
At the bottom was another signature.
A signature I recognized.
Not my mother's.
Not Claire's.
Not Mark's.
Mine.
May you like
And below it were five words:
*Permanent custody transfer agreement.*
