Chapter 9: The Letter With My Name On It

I stared at the envelope sitting on the windshield.

My name.

Written in black ink.

Emily Carter.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

It felt impossible that someone could know exactly where I would be, exactly when I would arrive, exactly how to make me feel afraid.

The officer immediately stepped forward.

“Nobody touches that.””

I nodded.

But my eyes never left the envelope.

The entire apartment building had become silent.

Neighbors watched from their doorways.

The police moved carefully around the entrance.

Daniel stood beside me, his face full of guilt.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

Not because I wanted an apology.

Because I was tired of apologies arriving after damage was already done.

“I need you to stop saying sorry.””

He looked surprised.

“I need you to tell the truth.””

His expression changed.

“I will.””

“Everything.””

He nodded.

“Everything.””

The officers brought the envelope inside after carefully collecting it.

We waited in the living room.

The same room where Marcus had once stood.

The same room where Lily had heard an argument.

The same room where Daniel had kept secrets.

The officer opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

No threats.

No angry words.

Just a message.

The officer read it silently first.

Then looked at Daniel.

“What?””

The officer handed it to him.

Daniel read the message.

His face changed instantly.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

Slowly, he handed it to me.

The message was short.

*Ask Daniel why he never told you about the night he saved Marcus.*

I looked up.

“What?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Not another secret.””

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

The officers watched silently.

Vanessa looked confused too.

Daniel sat down.

“I never told anyone the whole story.””

“Why?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

I waited.

He took a deep breath.

“The night Marcus came over, he wasn’t just angry.””

“What was he?””

“Desperate.””

Daniel looked at his hands.

“He had lost his job. His relationship ended. He blamed everyone around him.””

“And you?””

“I tried to help him.””

I stared.

“You helped him?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I gave him money.””

The room went quiet.

“Why?””

“Because I thought he was struggling.””

Daniel looked toward Lily.

“I didn’t want anyone to fall apart.””

I swallowed.

“So what happened?””

“He came back weeks later.””

“When?””

“The night Lily saw him.””

My stomach tightened.

“He wanted more money.””

“And you refused.””

Daniel nodded.

“He became angry.””

“Then why did you say you reported him?””

“Because after that night, I found out he had been lying to me.””

The pieces slowly connected.

Marcus wasn’t just angry about losing his job.

He believed Daniel abandoned him.

But that still didn’t explain everything.

“What does this have to do with Lily?””

Daniel looked destroyed.

“He knew she was the most important person in my life.””

A chill ran through me.

The officer looked serious.

“Mr. Carter, did Marcus ever threaten your daughter directly?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Once.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“The night Lily took the picture.””

I looked toward my daughter.

“She heard him.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“He told me that if I didn’t help him, he would take away the one thing I cared about most.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt anger rising.

“You heard that and you still didn’t tell me?””

Daniel wiped his eyes.

“I thought I could fix it before it reached you.””

“You thought?””

My voice broke.

“You thought while our daughter was scared.””

He lowered his head.

“I know.””

The officer stepped in.

“Mr. Carter, we need to understand why Marcus is targeting Mrs. Carter now.””

I looked at the envelope.

The answer was obvious.

Because Marcus knew I was the last person who could expose him.

But then Vanessa spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the note.

“This isn’t Marcus.””

The room froze.

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus wouldn’t write this.””

“How do you know?””

“Because he doesn’t talk like this.””

She looked at the message again.

“This sounds like someone who wants us to find something.””

I stared at her.

“Someone else?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The officer immediately asked:

“Do you have any idea who?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

And suddenly, she looked afraid.

“I might.””

“Who?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Someone from your past.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“No.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She took a deep breath.

“The person who taught Marcus how to manipulate people.””

The room went silent.

“Who taught him?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then she said a name.

A name that made Daniel stand up immediately.

“Rachel.””

I froze.

“Who is Rachel?””

Daniel looked like he had seen a ghost.

“She was my first wife.””

My heart dropped.

“You never told me you had another wife.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“I thought she was gone.””

The officer frowned.

“Gone?””

Daniel nodded.

“She disappeared years ago.””

A terrible feeling settled in my chest.

Because suddenly, this wasn’t about a stranger.

This wasn’t about a random person.

This was about someone who knew Daniel.

Someone who knew Lily.

Someone who knew exactly where to hurt him.

The officer’s radio suddenly went off.

“Sir.””

He turned away.

A few seconds later, his face changed.

“We found the owner of the vehicle.””

Everyone stood.

“Who?””

The officer looked at Daniel.

“It wasn’t Marcus.””

My heart raced.

“Then who?””

May you like

The officer answered quietly.

“The registered owner is Rachel Carter.””
