Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

The room went completely silent.

A camera.

Inside Lily’s bedroom.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“No.””

The word left my mouth before I even realized I said it.

The officer immediately raised his hands.

“We don’t know how long it was there.””

But that didn’t matter.

Someone had invaded the one place where my daughter was supposed to feel safe.

Her room.

Her bed.

Her private space.

I looked at Daniel.

His face had lost all color.

“I swear I didn’t know.””

I stared at him.

And for the first time, I believed him.

Because he looked just as horrified as I felt.

The officer carefully removed the device.

“We need to process this properly.””

Vanessa stood near the doorway.

Her expression was devastated.

“This is why I was scared.””

I turned toward her.

“What did you know?””

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“I suspected someone was watching Daniel.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus kept showing up.””

“Where?””

“At places he shouldn’t have been.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You never told me that.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Every time you said I was overreacting.””

Daniel looked down.

Because he knew.

He had ignored warnings.

Not because he was evil.

Because he thought he understood the situation better than everyone else.

And now my daughter had paid the price.

The officer walked back into the living room.

“Mr. Carter.””

Daniel looked up.

“Yes?””

“We need to ask about the night Lily mentioned.””

Daniel became tense.

“What night?””

“The night she saw Marcus.””

I looked at him.

“This is the part you never told me.””

Daniel sat down.

His hands shook.

“I thought keeping it from you would protect Lily.””

I crossed my arms.

“Explain.””

He took a deep breath.

“The night Lily saw Marcus, he came to my apartment angry.””

“Why?””

“Because he thought I ruined his career.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“She was supposed to be asleep.””

My heart tightened.

“But she wasn’t.””

He shook his head.

“She heard us arguing.””

“What did she hear?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Marcus threatened me.””

The room went still.

“Threatened you how?””

“He said he would make sure I lost everything.””

Vanessa nodded.

“That’s why I told him to go to the police.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I was embarrassed.””

I stared at him.

“Embarrassed?””

He looked ashamed.

“I didn’t want you to think I couldn’t protect our daughter.””

The anger inside me softened slightly.

Not disappeared.

But softened.

Because I finally saw the truth.

Daniel wasn’t hiding things because he didn’t care.

He was hiding them because he was afraid.

And fear made him make terrible choices.

Lily suddenly spoke.

“Mommy?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“Is Marcus mad at me?””

My heart broke.

I knelt beside her.

“No, sweetheart.””

“But he came because of Daddy.””

I held her hands.

“None of this is your fault.””

She looked toward Daniel.

“Daddy said he would fix it.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I will.””

Lily shook her head.

“You always say that.””

The words were quiet.

But they destroyed him.

Because children don’t need perfect parents.

They need honest ones.

A police officer’s radio suddenly crackled.

Everyone looked up.

“Unit three, we have movement near the building entrance.””

The officer touched his radio.

“What kind of movement?””

A pause.

Then:

“The suspect vehicle has returned.””

My heart started racing.

“Marcus?””

The officer looked toward the window.

“We don’t know yet.””

Everyone moved carefully toward the blinds.

Outside, a dark vehicle was parked near the entrance.

The same kind of car from the community center.

The officer watched for a few seconds.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He stepped closer to the window.

“Something’s wrong.””

“What is it?”” I asked.

He pointed toward the driver’s seat.

The car was empty.

But on the windshield…

There was a small envelope.

With one name written on it.

May you like

Mine.

*Emily Carter.*
