Chapter 6: The Truth Daniel Buried

The room went silent after Daniel said his name.

Marcus.

A man I had never met.

A man my daughter somehow knew.

A man who had been watching us.

I looked at Daniel.

“You said he was gone.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I thought he was.””

“What does that mean?””

He sat down slowly.

Like his legs couldn’t hold him anymore.

“After he got fired, he disappeared.””

“When?””

“And you never thought to tell me?””

“I didn’t think he was a threat.””

I stared at him.

“You keep saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“Every time something happens, you say you didn’t think.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“A mistake is forgetting a birthday gift. A mistake is missing a meeting.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“This was our daughter.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

“Because if you knew, you would have told me.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Vanessa stayed quiet.

Because she knew I was right.

The principal from Lily’s school arrived at the community center after Vanessa called her.

She sat across from us with a worried expression.

“I need to understand exactly what happened today.””

I explained everything.

The unknown woman.

The pickup.

The phone call.

The person watching.

When I finished, she looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Carter, did you authorize anyone else to access your child’s information?””

“No.””

“Did you share your school pickup details?””

Daniel hesitated.

The principal noticed.

“With who?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Marcus.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You shared Lily’s schedule with him?””

“Only once.””

“When?””

“During a work event.””

I stood up.

“You introduced a stranger into our daughter’s life.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“He wasn’t a stranger to me.””

“That’s the problem.””

The principal wrote something down.

“Do you have any reason to believe Marcus intended harm?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That scared everyone.

Finally, he said:

“He was obsessed with proving he was right.””

“About what?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“He blamed me for losing his job.””

The principal leaned forward.

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Because I reported something.””

“What?””

He looked ashamed.

“Marcus was using company money.””

The pieces started connecting.

The anger.

The disappearance.

The access.

The revenge.

But one thing still didn’t make sense.

“Why Lily?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“Yes, you do.””

Everyone looked at her.

She walked toward the table.

“Marcus knew Daniel cared about two things.””

She pointed gently.

“His reputation.””

“And his daughter.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“He wanted me to suffer.””

My heart sank.

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting quietly, drawing on a piece of paper.

A child trying to stay calm while adults discussed danger around her.

I walked over.

“Sweetheart.””

She looked up.

“Yes, Mommy?””

“Why did you trust Vanessa?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Because she listened.””

That simple answer hurt.

Not because Vanessa was there.

Because it made me realize how alone my daughter had felt.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted to replace you.””

“I know.””

I actually believed her.

She had risked Daniel’s anger.

She had brought Lily back.

She had called me.

Whatever else was true…

She had protected my child.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

He turned the phone toward me.

A message had arrived.

No photo.

No details.

Just one sentence.

*You should have listened when I warned you.*

Daniel’s hands started shaking.

The principal stood.

“Who sent it?””

Daniel looked up.

And his answer made the room freeze.

“It came from my apartment.””

My heart stopped.

“Your apartment?””

He nodded slowly.

“Someone is inside.””

Before anyone could react, another notification appeared.

This time, it was a video call request.

From Marcus.
