Chapter 9: Six Million Under the House
Police surrounded the house within seconds.
No one moved from the backyard.
Officer Brooks spoke into her radio.
“Possible armed suspect inside residence. Nobody enters without tactical clearance.””
I looked toward the kitchen windows.
Dark.
Nothing moved.
The house I had slept in for eleven years suddenly looked unfamiliar.
Mia climbed into my arms.
“Is the bad man inside?””
I hated that she even had to ask.
“Yes.””
“Is he coming out?””
“The police are here.””
She pressed her face into my shoulder.
I turned to Dad.
“Six million dollars?””
He looked exhausted.
“The money belonged to Elias.””
“You buried six million dollars under my house?””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
“Celeste.””
Vanessa stopped walking toward the patrol car.
Even in handcuffs, she heard her mother’s name.
“What?””
Officer Brooks signaled the officer holding Vanessa to wait.
Dad continued.
“Celeste stole it.””
Vanessa stared.
“My mother stole from Elias?””
“She took cash he kept off the books.””
“Why?””
“To get herself and you away.””
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
“She was coming back for me?””
Dad nodded.
“She planned to.””
Vanessa started crying.
Not the frightened tears from before.
These were different.
They came from somewhere twenty years old.
“Marcus said she chose the money.””
“He lied.””
“He said she disappeared with some man.””
“No.””
“He said she left me.””
Dad shook his head.
“She hid the money here because she knew Elias would search her home.””
“And then he killed her?””
Dad looked down.
“Yes.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
For a few seconds, even I felt sorry for her.
Then I saw Mia’s bruised cheek again.
Pain explained people.
It didn’t excuse them.
Officer Brooks asked, “Why didn’t Elias recover the money from this property?””
“He didn’t know exactly where it was.””
“But Margaret did?””
Dad nodded.
“She found Celeste’s map later.””
“My mother had the map?””
“She hid it.””
“Why?””
“I never knew.””
My phone showed the latest image again.
THANK YOUR MOTHER FOR THE MAP.
If Marcus had that map now, someone must have given it to him.
Mom had been dead four years.
I thought of her belongings.
Boxes in the attic.
Old documents.
Family photographs.
Vanessa had helped me sort through some of them after we married.
I looked at her.
“You found it.””
She stared.
“No.””
“You went through Mom’s things.””
“I never saw a map.””
“Then how did Marcus get it?””
“I don’t know.””
Caleb suddenly shouted from the ambulance.
“He took it from Grandma.””
Vanessa turned.
“What?””
Caleb sat up.
The social worker tried to calm him.
“Caleb, who is Grandma?””
He pointed at Vanessa.
“Her mom.””
Vanessa went still.
“My mother is dead.””
Caleb shook his head.
“No.””
Dad’s expression changed.
“What did you say?””
Caleb started breathing faster.
The paramedic adjusted his mask.
“I saw her.””
Vanessa stepped toward him despite the cuffs.
“When?””
“Blue house.””
Officer Brooks blocked Vanessa again.
“Stay back.””
Caleb continued.
“Dad called her Celeste.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa looked at Dad.
“You said she was dead.””
“That’s what I was told.””
Caleb shook his head violently.
“She’s old. Her hair is white.””
I felt the story shift again.
Maybe Celeste hadn’t been killed.
Maybe everyone had been lied to by someone else.
“Did she give Marcus the map?”” Officer Brooks asked.
Caleb nodded.
“But she didn’t want to.””
“What does that mean?””
“He hurt her.””
Vanessa’s knees weakened.
The officer caught her.
“Where is the blue house?”” Brooks asked.
Caleb looked frightened.
“I don’t know.””
“What do you remember?””
“Blue door. Big tree. Trains.””
A detective wrote quickly.
“Train tracks nearby?””
Caleb nodded.
“Could you see the tracks?””
“No. I heard them.””
Officer Brooks radioed the information.
Inside the house, something crashed again.
Everyone turned.
A tactical officer came around the side.
“We have entry point breached on the east side. No visual on suspect.””
“Thermal?””
“One heat signature moving below main floor.””
Marcus was under the house.
Exactly where Dad said the hidden foundation room was.
I looked at the oak tree.
The bunker.
The house.
All of it had been connected long before I understood any of it.
Dad touched my arm.
“Ryan.””
“What?””
“There’s a second exit.””
Officer Brooks snapped toward him.
“Where?””
“From the room beneath the study.””
“To where?””
Dad looked at the bunker.
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
“The structures were connected decades ago.””
The rescue team had only explored the corridor and two rooms.
Nobody had mentioned another passage.
Officer Brooks immediately radioed the bunker team.
“Seal all interior doors. Possible access tunnel from residence.””
Too late.
A metallic sound echoed from inside the bunker.
Everyone turned.
Caleb started screaming.
“No!””
Mia clung to me.
“What?””
Caleb pointed toward the red-lit entrance.
“He’s coming!””
Officer Brooks drew her weapon.
Officers moved into position.
The bunker door stood open now.
Dark corridor beyond.
Red light flickering.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Dragging.
Someone appeared in the corridor.
Not Marcus.
A woman.
Older.
Thin.
White hair falling around her face.
One wrist was bleeding where a plastic restraint had cut the skin.
Vanessa made a sound I will never forget.
“Mom?””
The woman stumbled into the yard.
Vanessa tried to run to her.
Officers stopped her.
“Mom!””
Celeste lifted her head.
Her eyes found Vanessa.
“Vanessa?””
Vanessa collapsed to her knees.
“You’re alive.””
Celeste began crying.
“I’m sorry.””
Then she saw Caleb.
Her face changed.
“Get him away from here.””
Officer Brooks grabbed her.
“Where is Marcus?””
Celeste pointed toward the tunnel.
“Under the house.””
“Armed?””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
“A handgun.””
My stomach tightened.
Celeste grabbed Brooks’s sleeve.
“He has the money.””
“Then why is he still here?””
Celeste looked toward Dad.
“Because Thomas has the last ledger.””
Dad stared.
“I don’t.””
Celeste shook her head.
“Yes, you do.””
Dad looked genuinely confused.
“Where?””
She pointed at him.
“Not on you.””
Then she pointed at me.
“On Ryan.””
I stared.
“What?””
Celeste’s eyes dropped to the silver watch on my wrist.
My father’s watch.
The one Mom gave me after his funeral.
“Inside it.””
My blood went cold.
I had worn that watch for twelve years.
Dad stared at it.
Then realization hit him.
“Margaret.””
Celeste nodded.
“She hid the ledger chip in the watch.””
My hands shook as I removed it.
A tiny seam ran along the back plate.
I had never noticed.
Officer Brooks reached for it.
Then a red laser dot appeared on her chest.
Everything exploded into motion.
“DOWN!””
Dad shouted.
I grabbed Mia and dropped.
A gunshot cracked from the bunker.
Concrete shattered beside Officer Brooks.
Officers fired toward the corridor.
Vanessa screamed.
Celeste hit the ground.
And through the smoke and red light, Marcus Vale stepped into view with a gun in one hand.
He looked directly at me.
May you like
Then at the watch.
“Give me what my family died for.””
