Chapter 4: Someone Beyond the Fence

My first instinct was to look toward the trees.

Officer Brooks saw my face change.

“What happened?””

I showed her the phone.

Her expression hardened instantly.

“Everyone down.””

The officers moved fast.

One pulled Mia and me behind the concrete retaining wall while another radioed units toward the road beyond our fence.

Vanessa stayed standing.

Officer Brooks grabbed her arm.

“Move.””

Vanessa resisted.

“Who sent it?””

I shouted.

No answer.

“Vanessa!””

She looked toward the dark tree line.

“You should listen to him.””

My stomach dropped.

“You know who it is.””

She said nothing.

Officer Brooks pushed her behind cover.

“Who is threatening this family?””

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

“My ex-husband.””

There it was.

Another secret.

Another lie.

“You told me you’d never been married.””

“I was nineteen.””

“That does not make it not a marriage.””

“He was dangerous.””

“And you brought his child here?””

“No.””

I looked at the bunker.

“Then how did Caleb get here?””

“He brought him.””

The backyard seemed to tilt beneath me.

“Your ex-husband brought your son to my house?””

Vanessa nodded once.

“When?””

“The first time? Last winter.””

Mia whimpered against my chest.

I forced myself to keep my voice down.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at our daughter.

Not her daughter.

Mine.

“He wanted money.””

“For what?””

“He always wants money.””

“How much?””

“Fifty thousand.””

I almost laughed.

“You had fifty thousand dollars?””

“No.””

“Then what did you give him?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The question immediately became worse.

“What did you give him?””

She looked toward the house.

My house.

The house my parents left me.

I understood.

“No.””

“Ryan—”

“No.””

“I didn’t have a choice.””

“What did you promise him?””

“Access.””

The word chilled me.

“To what?””

She remained silent.

Officer Brooks stepped between us.

“We need specifics now.””

Vanessa finally said, “The storm shelter.””

I stared at her.

“That bunker is a storm shelter?””

“It used to be.””

“I’ve owned this property for eleven years.””

“It was sealed before you bought it.””

“How do you know?””

“My ex knew the previous owner.””

Of course he did.

Every answer opened another door.

“What did he use it for?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Storage.””

Officer Brooks asked, “Storage of what?””

“I don’t know.””

“Drugs?””

“No.””

“Weapons?””

“No.””

“People?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Officer Brooks saw it.

So did I.

“People?”” I repeated.

Vanessa started crying.

Not loudly.

Just tears sliding down her face while she stood against the cold concrete.

“I didn’t know at first.””

Mia whispered into my neck, “Daddy, I want to go inside.””

I kissed her hair.

“We will.””

But I couldn’t take her inside yet.

Not while someone was watching the property.

Not while we didn’t know where the threat was coming from.

Another officer came running across the yard.

“No visual on the sender. Patrol found tire tracks near the service road.””

Officer Brooks asked, “Fresh?””

“Looks like it.””

The man could already be gone.

Or nearby.

Watching.

My phone buzzed again.

Every officer looked at it.

Officer Brooks held out her hand.

“Don’t open it yourself.””

I gave her the phone.

A new message.

SHE KNOWS THE RULES.

Vanessa covered her face.

Officer Brooks turned the phone around.

“What rules?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Vanessa.””

“He doesn’t want Caleb talking.””

“About what?””

“He thinks Caleb saw something.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

I exploded.

“You keep saying you don’t know!””

Mia started crying harder.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“I’m sorry, baby.””

She touched my face.

“Don’t yell.””

“I won’t.””

I held her closer.

My anger didn’t disappear.

It simply became colder.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You will tell them everything.””

She nodded weakly.

“Start with his name.””

She hesitated.

Officer Brooks said, “Your ex-husband’s name.””

“Marcus Vale.””

A radio crackled.

One officer immediately looked up.

“Repeat that.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Marcus Vale.””

The officer exchanged a glance with Brooks.

I noticed.

“You know him?””

Officer Brooks didn’t answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

“What?””

She turned to Vanessa.

“Marcus Vale has an active warrant in two states.””

“For what?”” I asked.

“Kidnapping. Aggravated assault. Unlawful confinement.””

My gaze moved toward the bunker.

Caleb.

Vanessa saw the conclusion forming.

“No. Marcus didn’t kidnap Caleb.””

“Then why is he locked underground?””

“Because Marcus said it was the only place Caleb would be safe.””

I stared at her.

“You believed him?””

“No.””

“But you still locked your son in there.””

Her voice broke.

“He said he would kill him if I didn’t.””

Mia lifted her head.

Even at four, she understood the word.

“Kill who?””

I looked at Officer Brooks.

“Can somebody take my daughter somewhere she can’t hear this?””

“No!””

Mia locked her arms around my neck.

“I stay with Daddy.””

“Mia—”

“No!””

Her panic was immediate.

After Vanessa had struck her and dragged her across the yard, there was no chance I was forcing her into anyone else’s arms.

So I kept her.

Officer Brooks softened her voice.

“That’s okay. She can stay.””

The bunker remained sealed while specialists examined the wire.

The red utility light continued flickering.

Bread remained scattered in the dirt.

One roll had been crushed beneath someone’s boot.

I couldn’t stop looking at it.

A four-year-old had done more for Caleb than every adult around him.

She had heard him.

Believed him.

Fed him.

I hadn’t even known he existed.

“Daddy,” Mia whispered.

“What?””

“Caleb told me a secret.””

Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.

Officer Brooks immediately stepped in front of Vanessa.

“What secret?”” I asked.

Mia looked uncertain.

“He told me not to tell.””

“Sweetheart, if the secret can help him, you can tell me.””

She thought about it.

Then leaned close to my ear.

“He said his daddy buried something.””

My skin prickled.

“Where?””

Mia pointed.

Not toward the bunker.

Toward the enormous oak tree thirty feet away.

Vanessa whispered, “Oh, God.””

Officer Brooks turned.

“What is buried there?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You reacted like you do.””

“I know what Marcus said.””

“What?””

“He said if anything ever happened to him, nobody should dig under that tree.””

I stared at the ground beneath the oak.

Police immediately moved to secure the area.

Then Caleb began coughing violently inside the bunker.

The paramedic dropped down beside the door.

“Caleb? Stay with me.””

No answer.

“Caleb!””

The coughing stopped.

Too suddenly.

Mia screamed his name.

The paramedic looked up.

“We need that door open now.””

A technician shouted from beside the frame.

“The wire is a contact alarm. Not explosive.””

“Open it.””

The key turned.

Vanessa surged forward.

“No!””

Two officers restrained her.

The lock came free.

The rusted door groaned.

For the first time, it began to move.

Then my phone rang.

Not a text.

A call.

Unknown number.

Officer Brooks answered on speaker.

Nobody spoke.

Then a man’s voice said one sentence.

May you like

“If that door opens, Ryan, Mia disappears next.””

And somewhere beyond the fence, a gunshot cracked through the darkness.
