Chapter 3: The Name in the Photograph

“Tell Dad I’m sorry.””

The words came through the bunker door so softly I almost convinced myself I had imagined them.

Vanessa did not.

She slid one hand along the concrete wall to steady herself.

Mia looked up at me.

“Daddy, who’s his dad?””

“I don’t know.””

But Vanessa did.

I could see it.

The backyard gate slammed open.

Two police officers came through first, followed by a paramedic carrying an emergency bag.

“Ryan Carter?””

“That’s me.””

I raised both hands enough to show I wasn’t a threat.

“My daughter is Mia. That’s Vanessa. The child is behind that door.””

One officer, a tall woman named Officer Brooks, moved immediately toward Mia.

“Is anyone hurt?””

“My daughter was struck.””

Mia buried her face against my side.

Officer Brooks looked at the red mark on Mia’s cheek.

“Who hit her?””

I pointed at Vanessa.

Vanessa snapped, “That has nothing to do with the bunker.””

Officer Brooks turned slowly.

“You’ll stay where you are.””

A second officer approached the entrance.

“What’s inside?””

“I don’t know,” I said.

“We heard a child.””

“Door locked?””

“Yes.””

“Who has the key?””

Every face turned toward Vanessa.

Her hand still rested near the chain beneath her blouse.

Officer Brooks noticed.

“Ma’am, remove your hand from your clothing.””

Vanessa obeyed.

“Do you have the key?””

“No.””

Mia immediately said, “Yes, she does.””

Officer Brooks crouched.

“Where did you see it, sweetheart?””

“On her necklace.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“She’s confused.””

“I’m not confused!”” Mia cried.

The officer stood.

“Ma’am, I need you to remove the necklace slowly.””

Vanessa didn’t move.

“Now.””

Her fingers shook as she reached behind her neck.

The chain came free.

A brass key dropped into view.

Mia pointed.

“That one!””

Officer Brooks took it.

Vanessa spoke quickly.

“It does not mean what you think.””

Officer Brooks handed the key to the other officer.

“We’ll determine that.””

The man tried it in the bunker lock.

It fit.

Vanessa made a broken sound in her throat.

“No.””

I stared at her.

“You lied.””

“Ryan.””

“You had the key.””

“Listen to me.””

“You locked a child underground.””

“No.””

“You had the key!””

“He wasn’t supposed to be there this long.””

The officers both looked at her.

Vanessa realized what she had admitted.

She covered her mouth.

Officer Brooks stepped closer.

“How long was he supposed to be there?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Ma’am?””

“Don’t open that door.””

The second officer paused.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t understand what he’ll say.””

My skin crawled.

“What the hell does that mean?””

Officer Brooks put one hand up toward me.

“Sir, stay back.””

I wanted to ignore her.

I wanted to grab the key myself.

But Mia was still holding me.

So I stayed.

The officer turned the lock.

Click.

Mia flinched.

The red light flickered below the door.

The paramedic stepped forward.

Then Officer Brooks raised a hand.

“Wait.””

She looked down.

A thin wire disappeared from the door frame into the concrete.

The second officer spotted it too.

“What is that?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

I saw a new kind of terror.

“Don’t pull it.””

Officer Brooks stared at her.

“Why?””

“Just don’t.””

The officer moved everyone farther back.

Within minutes, more police entered the backyard.

The bunker remained closed.

A fire-rescue specialist examined the door while the paramedic called through the gap.

“Caleb? My name is James. I’m a paramedic. Can you hear me?””

A weak answer came.

“Yes.””

“Are you hurt?””

“My head.””

“Are you bleeding?””

“I don’t know.””

“Can you move your arms and legs?””

“Yes.””

“Good. Stay where you are. We’re getting you out.””

Vanessa whispered, “You shouldn’t tell him that.””

I turned on her.

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Why?””

“Because he panics.””

“He’s trapped underground!””

“You don’t know him.””

“But you do.””

She fell silent.

Officer Brooks returned.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to talk.””

“She’s not Mia’s mother,” I said automatically.

Vanessa looked at me.

Something passed across her face.

Pain, maybe.

I didn’t care.

Officer Brooks continued.

“Who is Caleb?””

Vanessa stared at the ground.

“Answer her.””

“Ryan, stop.””

“No.””

Officer Brooks asked again.

“Who is Caleb?””

Vanessa finally looked toward the bunker.

“My son.””

Mia inhaled sharply.

I felt my stomach drop.

“You told me you didn’t have children.””

Vanessa’s voice turned flat.

“I said I didn’t have a child living with me.””

“That is not what you said.””

“It was complicated.””

“Complicated?””

I laughed once.

The sound came out ugly.

“You hid your son from me.””

“You wouldn’t have married me.””

“You’re damn right I wouldn’t have married you if you told me you kept your son locked under my backyard.””

“He wasn’t here when we got married.””

That silenced me.

Officer Brooks caught it too.

“When did he come here?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Three weeks ago.””

Mia whispered, “No.””

Everyone looked down.

My daughter shook her head.

“He was here before.””

Vanessa went rigid.

Officer Brooks crouched again.

“What do you mean?””

Mia pointed toward the bunker.

“I heard him before Christmas.””

My chest stopped.

Christmas had been nine months earlier.

Vanessa whispered, “Mia.””

Officer Brooks immediately snapped, “Do not address the child.””

Mia continued.

“I thought it was a ghost.””

“When did you first hear him?””

“When Daddy put the lights outside.””

December.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You said three weeks.””

“He comes and goes.””

The sentence was so horrifyingly casual that nobody spoke for a second.

Officer Brooks stood.

“Comes and goes from where?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I need a lawyer.””

That was the first intelligent thing she had said all night.

A fire-rescue worker approached.

“We can get the door open, but the wire runs inside. We need bomb squad clearance before manipulating it.””

I stared at him.

“Bomb squad?””

“We don’t know what the wire is connected to.””

Mia began crying.

I lifted her immediately.

“It’s okay.””

“Caleb is scared.””

“I know.””

“Don’t leave him.””

“I won’t.””

She wrapped both arms around my neck.

Vanessa watched us.

For a second, her face softened.

Then the bunker voice spoke again.

“Ryan?””

I froze.

He knew my name now.

“Yes?””

“Is she gone?””

I looked toward Vanessa.

“No.””

A long silence.

Then Caleb whispered, “Don’t let her take me back.””

Officer Brooks turned sharply toward Vanessa.

“Take you back where?””

No answer came from inside.

“Caleb?””

Breathing.

Then one sentence.

“The blue house.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Officer Brooks asked, “What blue house?””

Vanessa remained silent.

I suddenly remembered something.

A photograph.

The same old picture I had once found in Vanessa’s dresser.

Vanessa stood in front of a faded blue house.

A little boy beside her.

Caleb.

And behind them was a man whose face had been scratched out with black marker.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who was the man in the photograph?””

Her eyes opened.

She knew exactly which photograph.

“Ryan.””

“Who was he?””

“Stop.””

“Caleb said tell Dad he’s sorry.””

“Stop.””

“Who is Caleb’s father?””

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“You don’t want to know.””

The words landed harder than anything else she had said.

I stared at her.

Officer Brooks stared too.

Then my phone vibrated in my pocket.

I almost ignored it.

Mia pulled back slightly.

“Daddy, your phone.””

I took it out.

Unknown number.

One text message.

No words.

Just a photograph.

I opened it.

The image showed our backyard.

Taken from beyond the fence.

Taken minutes earlier.

Mia was in my arms.

Police surrounded the bunker.

Vanessa stood beside the concrete wall.

Someone was watching us.

Then a second message appeared.

THIS DOESN’T BELONG TO YOU, RYAN.

May you like

And a third.

WALK AWAY FROM THE DOOR IF YOU WANT YOUR DAUGHTER SAFE.
