Chapter 8: The Son Who Betrayed His Father
Daniel Caldwell waited in a small coffee shop near the river.
Not a fancy restaurant.
Not a private office.
Not somewhere Richard Caldwell would normally be seen.
That alone told me something.
He was afraid.
My father sat across from him.
I sat beside my father.
David sat nearby, watching every movement.
Daniel looked nothing like Richard.
Richard carried himself like every room belonged to him.
Daniel looked like someone who had spent years apologizing for someone else’s actions.
He was in his early thirties.
Tired eyes.
Messy hair.
A nervous habit of tapping his fingers against his coffee cup.
“I know you have questions,” he said.
I stared at him.
“You think?””
He nodded.
“I deserve that.””
My father leaned forward.
“Start talking.””
Daniel looked down.
“My father didn’t tell you everything.””
“That’s obvious,” I said.
Daniel swallowed.
“The night your mother disappeared, she wasn’t running away.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked around.
Then lowered his voice.
“She came to our house.””
My father froze.
“When?””
“Twenty years ago.””
“Why?””
“Because she found proof my father was laundering money through Caldwell Development.””
I listened carefully.
“She came to you?””
Daniel nodded.
“She thought I was the only person inside the family who could help her.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Why?””
“Because she knew I hated what he was doing.””
I stared at him.
“You were a child.””
“I was seventeen.””
A pause.
“Old enough to understand.””
Daniel looked at the table.
“My father found out.””
The words came slowly.
“He was furious.””
“What did he do?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“He told me if I helped her, he would destroy everyone connected to me.””
My father’s voice became sharp.
“What happened next?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Your mother gave me something.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
The air changed.
“What kind of recording?””
“Your mother recorded Richard admitting everything.””
My heart started racing.
“Where is it?””
Daniel looked away.
“That’s the problem.””
“What do you mean?””
“My father found it.””
Silence.
“He thought he destroyed it.””
“But?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
My breathing stopped.
“I made a copy.””
My father immediately stood.
“Why didn’t you come forward before?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I was scared.””
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
“My father controlled everything. Money. Lawyers. Reputation.””
I understood that.
More than I wanted to.
Daniel looked at me.
“But when I saw what happened at the restaurant…”
My eyes narrowed.
“You saw?””
He nodded.
“It was everywhere online.””
My stomach dropped.
A video.
Someone had recorded Richard hitting me.
Daniel continued.
“I saw my father do the same thing he always does.””
“What?””
“Find someone he thinks is weaker.””
The words stayed with me.
Because that was exactly what happened.
Daniel pushed the flash drive across the table.
“This is everything.””
My father didn’t touch it.
“Why should we trust you?””
Daniel looked at him.
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised all of us.
He continued.
“But you should listen.””
My father finally picked up the drive.
“We’ll verify it.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s all I’m asking.””
Before we could leave, my phone received a notification.
A news alert.
I opened it.
My face went pale.
*CALDWELL DEVELOPMENT CEO ACCUSED OF ASSAULT AT CHICAGO RESTAURANT*
The article had the video.
The entire world now knew.
Richard’s reputation was collapsing.
But underneath the headline was something else.
A statement from Caldwell Development.
I read it.
Then my hands started shaking.
“What?””
My father looked at me.
I handed him the phone.
The statement said:
*The incident involving Richard Caldwell has been manipulated by individuals attempting to damage the company before a major financial transaction. Legal action will be taken against those responsible.*
David frowned.
“They’re fighting back.””
“No,” Daniel whispered.
Everyone looked at him.
He looked terrified.
“That’s not what worries me.””
“What does?”” I asked.
Daniel stared at the phone.
“My father never attacks publicly.””
A pause.
“He attacks quietly.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“I’m saying if Richard knows you have that file…”
His voice lowered.
“He won’t try to destroy your reputation.””
I felt a chill.
“Then what will he do?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
Toward the city.
Toward the world outside.
“He’ll try to make sure you disappear.””
At that exact moment, my father’s phone rang.
He answered.
The color drained from his face.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“Where is she?””
My heart stopped.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“It’s your house.””
“What about it?””
His voice shook.
“Someone broke in.””
I stood.
“What did they take?””
My father stared at me.
And I knew before he said it.
“The original file.””
May you like
A pause.
“And the only photograph of your mother.””
