Chapter 3: The Secret Inside the Folder

The name “Marcus” hung in the air like a warning.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Richard.

Not my father.

Not even the customers who had been pretending not to listen.

I stood near the kitchen entrance, pressing the ice pack against my cheek, trying to understand what had just happened.

A few minutes earlier, Richard Caldwell had been the most powerful man in the room.

Now he looked like someone who had just watched his entire future collapse in front of him.

My father picked up the folder from the table.

“You know exactly who Marcus is.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

My father gave a small, humorless smile.

“That’s what you said three months ago when we asked about the missing construction reports.””

Richard looked toward the restaurant doors.

Like he was calculating whether leaving would somehow make the situation disappear.

It wouldn’t.

Not this time.

My father’s attorney, David, stepped forward.

“Mr. Caldwell, we have documentation connecting Caldwell Development to unauthorized financial transfers through several shell companies.””

Richard laughed.

But it sounded forced.

“You’re accusing me of fraud because my wife’s restaurant employee claims I hit her?””

My stomach tightened.

He was trying to twist the story again.

Trying to make me the reason.

My father looked at him.

“No.””

He pointed toward me.

“She is the reason I stopped shaking your hand.””

The room went quiet.

Richard stared at him.

My father continued.

“The investigation started before tonight.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“Investigation?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

My father didn’t answer.

Instead, David opened another document.

“Federal investigators have already requested financial records related to three Caldwell Development projects.””

Richard’s confidence cracked.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

He looked at Victoria.

She looked away.

And that was when I realized something.

She knew.

She knew something.

Richard noticed my expression.

“What?””

I didn’t answer.

“You think you understand something?”” he snapped.

My father stepped between us.

“You’re done threatening people.””

Richard looked at him.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.””

My father’s voice stayed calm.

“I know exactly who I’m dealing with.””

A pause.

“A man who believes money can erase consequences.””

Richard’s face turned red.

“You think you’re better than me?””

“No.””

My father looked at the broken plates on the floor.

“I think you forgot other people exist.””

The police arrived ten minutes later.

Richard tried to control the situation.

He always had.

He spoke to the officers like he was explaining something to employees.

“There has been a misunderstanding.””

One officer looked at Kevin.

“Did you witness the incident?””

Kevin nodded.

“Yes.””

The officer turned to me.

“Are you willing to make a statement?””

Before I could answer, Richard interrupted.

“Do you know the kind of lawsuit you’re inviting?””

The officer looked at him.

“Sir.””

Richard stopped.

“You need to understand who I am.””

The officer sighed.

“I understand exactly who you are.””

He glanced at the card still lying near the broken glass.

“That doesn’t change the law.””

For the first time that night, Richard had no response.

He left the restaurant after giving his statement.

But before he walked through the door, he looked back at me.

Not angry.

Not embarrassed.

Something worse.

He looked like someone planning revenge.

Outside, his black SUV disappeared into the city traffic.

I thought the night was finally over.

I was wrong.

Because when the restaurant emptied and the staff began cleaning, my father asked me to sit in his office.

I knew that look.

Something was coming.

“You should have told me,” he said.

I frowned.

“Told you what?””

“That he hit you.””

I looked down.

“I didn’t want you to make a scene.””

My father stared at me.

“Emily.””

His voice softened.

“Your safety is not a scene.””

I swallowed.

For years, I had watched my father build everything from nothing.

I knew him as a businessman.

A negotiator.

A man who could walk into a room full of executives and make everyone listen.

But that night, I saw something different.

A father.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He shook his head.

“Don’t apologize for someone else’s actions.””

I looked at the folder on his desk.

“Who is Marcus?””

My father went silent.

That silence told me more than words could.

“Dad?””

He leaned back in his chair.

“Marcus Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“He was Richard’s business partner.””

“Was?””

My father nodded.

“Eight years ago, Marcus disappeared.””

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“What does that have to do with tonight?””

My father opened the folder again.

Inside were photographs.

Bank statements.

Emails.

Documents.

And one newspaper article.

The headline made my heart stop.

*LOCAL DEVELOPER MISSING AFTER FINANCIAL DISPUTE.*

I looked at the photo.

A man in his forties.

Dark hair.

Friendly smile.

Someone who looked completely ordinary.

“What happened to him?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

“Richard claimed Marcus stole millions from their company and ran away.””

“And you don’t believe that?””

My father looked at the documents.

“No.””

“Why?””

He slid one paper toward me.

A transfer record.

A payment made three days before Marcus disappeared.

The recipient name was hidden.

But the company was clear.

Caldwell Development.

My breath caught.

“Dad…”

“I was going to confront Richard during the loan meeting tonight.””

“But now?””

My father looked toward the door.

“Now he knows we’re investigating.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What happens next?””

My father closed the folder.

“I don’t know.””

That scared me more than anything else.

Because my father always knew.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He picked up.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his face went pale.

“What did you say?””

I stood.

“Dad?””

He covered the phone.

“Emily, go home.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

Because whatever he heard was something he didn’t want me involved in.

“The police just found something.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

May you like

My father slowly lowered the phone.

“They found Marcus Hale.””
