Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Marcus Hale was alive.

That was the first thing my father told me.

The second thing was that Richard Caldwell had been lying for eight years.

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Richard’s hand hitting my face.

But worse than that, I saw the expression on his face when my father said Marcus’s name.

Fear.

Real fear.

The next morning, I arrived at my father’s office before sunrise.

The city outside was gray and cold.

Chicago looked different when you knew someone powerful had secrets buried beneath it.

My father was already there.

So was David.

And sitting across from them was a woman I had never met.

She looked exhausted.

Early forties.

Dark hair pulled back.

Hands shaking around a coffee cup.

When I walked in, everyone became quiet.

My father stood.

“Emily.””

I looked at the woman.

“Who is she?””

The woman stared at me.

Then she whispered:

“My name is Sarah Hale.””

I froze.

“Hale?””

She nodded.

“Marcus was my brother.””

I sat down slowly.

“What happened to him?””

Sarah looked at my father.

“He disappeared because Richard Caldwell wanted him gone.””

The room became silent.

My father leaned forward.

“Sarah, tell her what you told us.””

Sarah took a deep breath.

“Eight years ago, Marcus discovered Richard was moving company money into private accounts.””

David nodded.

“We have evidence supporting that.””

Sarah continued.

“But Marcus wasn’t trying to expose him publicly.””

“Why not?”” I asked.

“Because Richard threatened his family.””

My hands tightened.

“He threatened you?””

Sarah nodded.

“He told Marcus that if he went to the police, my daughter would disappear.””

A cold chill ran through me.

“What happened then?””

Sarah looked down.

“Marcus made a deal.””

“With Richard?””

“Yes.””

“What kind of deal?””

“He agreed to disappear.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It didn’t make sense to me either.””

Sarah’s voice shook.

“But Marcus believed he could gather enough evidence from hiding.””

My father looked at David.

“And then Richard told everyone Marcus stole the money and ran.””

Sarah nodded.

“That was the story.””

I looked at the documents on the table.

“And where was he all these years?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father said:

“Underground.””

The word sounded unreal.

“Underground?””

“He was hiding under a different name.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Why come back now?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Because Richard knows someone found out.””

A silence followed.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

My father immediately said:

“Don’t answer.””

But I already had.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only breathing.

Then a voice.

Richard.

“Emily.””

My entire body froze.

“How did you get my number?””

A quiet laugh.

“You really think numbers are difficult to find?””

I stood.

“Leave me alone.””

“Your father is making a mistake.””

I looked at my father.

He was watching me carefully.

Richard continued.

“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“You understand nothing.””

I felt my anger rise.

“You attacked me because I brought you the wrong steak.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I attacked you because you were in the way.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Ask your father why he never told you about your mother.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

The call ended.

I lowered the phone slowly.

My father’s face had changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Something else.

Pain.

“Dad?””

He looked away.

“Emily…”

I had never heard hesitation in his voice before.

“What was he talking about?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Sarah quietly placed her coffee cup down.

“Your mother knew Marcus Hale.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

My father closed his eyes.

And in that moment, I realized there was another secret.

A secret much older than Richard Caldwell.

A secret my own family had kept from me.

My father finally looked at me.

And the words that came out next changed everything.

“Your mother didn’t disappear.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

May you like

He swallowed.

“She was the person who helped Marcus hide.””
