Chapter 8: The Truth My Grandfather Buried

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The desert seemed to hold its breath.

I looked at Aiyana.

Then at Elias.

Then back at Caleb.

Three people.

Three different versions of the past.

And somehow, I was standing in the middle of all of it.

“You knew?”” I asked Caleb.

He did not answer.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“You knew what happened to her father.””

Caleb looked away.

“I knew pieces.””

“Pieces?””

My voice rose.

“You came onto my land with threats, chased a woman who was barely alive, and you knew her father disappeared?””

Aiyana stepped closer.

“Corvin.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I deserve the truth.””

She held my gaze.

“You do.””

Then she turned toward Elias.

The man stood below with his group, waiting.

“My father discovered the original agreement years ago.””

Her voice was quiet.

“He learned that the land was never meant to be taken by one person.””

I listened.

“He also learned someone had been changing records. Moving boundaries. Creating false claims.””

My eyes moved toward Elias.

“And him?””

Aiyana nodded.

“Elias wanted this land.””

A voice called from below.

“Careful, Aiyana.””

Elias stepped forward.

“You always were good at telling half the story.””

Aiyana’s expression hardened.

“Then tell the rest.””

Elias smiled.

“Gladly.””

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather and my father made a mistake.””

I frowned.

“What mistake?””

“They believed people could share land without conflict.””

He spread his arms.

“They were wrong.””

I stared at him.

“So you decided to take it?””

“I decided to correct their weakness.””

The arrogance in his voice made my stomach turn.

Elias continued.

“Your grandfather realized too late that the agreement gave too much power to the Apache council.””

Aiyana interrupted.

“It gave power to everyone who protected this land.””

Elias ignored her.

“He hid the document because he knew his own family would lose everything.””

I looked at the agreement in my hand.

None of it matched the story I had grown up with.

My grandfather was not a powerful man.

Not in my memories.

Not in my family stories.

He was just a name nobody mentioned.

“Why me?”” I asked.

Elias looked at me.

“Because your grandfather trusted you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“He never met me.””

Elias smiled.

“You are wrong.””

The words froze me.

“What?””

“He watched you.””

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

“What are you talking about?””

Elias pointed toward the cabin.

“Samuel Rourke did not sell you this ranch because he needed money.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then why?””

“Because he knew the people hunting this agreement would eventually come.””

He looked at Aiyana.

“He needed someone outside the conflict.””

I looked at Caleb.

Then Elias.

Then the cabin.

My entire life had been built around a lie.

Aiyana approached me.

“Your grandfather protected this secret because he believed the right person would eventually find it.””

“And he thought that person was me?””

She nodded.

“Because you were the only person who bought this land and never tried to own what was underneath it.””

The words stayed with me.

I thought about every year on that ranch.

Every storm I repaired.

Every animal I cared for.

Every morning I woke up and worked.

I never saw it as something to conquer.

It was simply home.

Elias raised his hand.

The men behind him moved forward.

“I am done waiting.””

The Apache warriors tightened their formation.

Tomas rode toward the front.

“This ends today.””

Elias smiled.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“This ends when Corvin chooses.””

I frowned.

“Chooses what?””

He pointed at the agreement.

“Whether he honors his grandfather’s mistake…”

His eyes shifted toward Aiyana.

“…or protects his own future.””

I stared at him.

“You think I would betray people for land?””

Elias smiled.

“Everyone has a price.””

Aiyana looked at me.

I saw the concern in her eyes.

Not because she doubted me.

Because she knew what was coming.

Elias reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Then he held it up.

“This belonged to your grandfather.””

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the one place nobody thought to search.””

He tossed it onto the dirt between us.

“Inside is the final truth.””

Nobody moved.

The envelope sat there.

Waiting.

I stepped forward.

Aiyana grabbed my arm.

“Corvin.””

I looked at her.

She shook her head.

“Be careful.””

I walked toward the envelope.

Because after everything I had learned…

after all the secrets buried beneath my home…

I needed answers.

I picked it up.

The paper inside was old.

The handwriting was familiar.

And the first sentence made my blood run cold.

“Corvin, if you are reading this, it means they found the ranch before I could return…”

I stopped breathing.

Because below the message was a name.

The person my grandfather warned me about.

The person he believed would destroy everything.

May you like

And it was not Elias.

It was someone standing beside me.
