Chapter 5: The Chamber Beneath the Earth

The first thing I heard was wood breaking.

The second thing I heard was the sound beneath my feet.

A deep mechanical click.

For one impossible second, everything stopped.

The men outside were forcing their way into my cabin.

Caleb Voss was shouting.

The wind was screaming through the broken doorway.

But all I could focus on was the hidden door beneath the floor.

It had opened.

Not because we touched it.

Not because we forced it.

It opened by itself.

Aiyana looked down at the opening.

Her face had lost all color.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She did not answer.

That worried me more than anything.

I grabbed the lantern and lowered it toward the darkness.

A narrow stone staircase disappeared beneath the cabin.

The air rising from below was cold.

Not desert cold.

Ancient cold.

The kind of air that had been trapped away from the world for decades.

Behind us, the front door cracked again.

“They’re inside soon,” I said.

Aiyana looked toward the entrance.

Then back at the stairs.

“We cannot let them find what is below.””

I nodded.

“Then we go.””

She looked at me.

“You trust me?””

I almost laughed.

A day earlier, I did not even know her name.

Now I was following her into a hidden chamber beneath my own home while armed strangers tried to break in.

“No,” I said honestly.

Her expression tightened.

“But?””

I lifted the lantern.

“But I trust that those men outside are worse.””

For the first time, Aiyana gave a small nod.

“Good answer.””

We descended.

The moment my boots touched the stone floor below, I felt like I had stepped into another world.

The chamber was enormous.

Bigger than my entire cabin.

The walls were carved from solid rock, covered with symbols and markings.

Old tools rested against one wall.

Blankets that had turned to dust sat in the corners.

And in the center of the room was a large wooden chest.

Not a treasure chest.

Something different.

Something carefully protected.

Aiyana walked toward it slowly.

Her fingers brushed across the carved surface.

“My grandfather told me stories about this.””

“What is it?””

She looked at me.

“The reason my father disappeared.””

I stared at the chest.

“Your father was looking for this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She took a deep breath.

“Because inside this chamber is the proof of something people have spent generations trying to hide.””

I stepped closer.

“What kind of proof?””

Before she answered, we heard a sound above us.

Footsteps.

Someone had entered my cabin.

Aiyana immediately turned off the lantern.

Darkness covered us.

The voices above became clearer.

“Search everything.””

Caleb.

He had followed us.

I could hear drawers opening.

Furniture moving.

Then another voice.

“You think the chamber is here?””

Caleb answered.

“It has to be.””

I looked at Aiyana.

She stood completely still.

Not afraid.

Ready.

The footsteps moved closer.

Above us, someone dragged something across the floor.

Then Caleb spoke again.

“Corvin Torne.””

Hearing my name from his mouth sent a chill through me.

“I know you can hear me.””

I stayed silent.

“He thinks this is his land,” Caleb continued.

“He thinks the ranch belongs to him because he signed a piece of paper.””

Aiyana’s jaw tightened.

“He knows nothing.””

Caleb laughed.

“Exactly.””

The voices moved away.

Aiyana slowly turned the lantern back on.

“Why does he know your name?””

I shook my head.

“I have no idea.””

But deep down, I knew something was wrong.

People did not bring hundreds of armed riders to my property because of an accident.

They did not break into a man’s home because of curiosity.

This had started long before I met Aiyana.

I walked toward the chest.

“What is inside?””

Aiyana looked at the lock.

“It can only be opened by someone who understands why it was hidden.””

“That sounds complicated.””

“It is.””

She touched the symbol carved into the wood.

Then she looked at me.

“Put your hand here.””

I hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because the chamber opened when you arrived.””

“That is impossible.””

“Maybe.””

She looked at the stone walls.

“But impossible things have happened before.””

I placed my hand on the symbol.

Nothing happened.

Then I remembered something.

The day I bought the ranch.

The previous owner, Samuel Rourke, had shaken my hand.

He had said something strange.

At the time, I thought he was joking.

“Take care of what others forgot.””

My palm suddenly felt warm.

The symbol beneath my hand shifted.

Aiyana stepped back.

The lock opened.

Neither of us moved.

The chest slowly opened.

Inside was not gold.

Not weapons.

Not anything I expected.

There was a bundle of old documents wrapped in leather.

A small metal box.

And a photograph.

I picked up the photograph.

The edges were worn.

The image showed a group of people standing outside the same cabin.

But the cabin looked different.

Newer.

And standing among them was a man I recognized.

My breath stopped.

Samuel Rourke.

The man who sold me the ranch.

But he was not alone.

Beside him stood a young Apache woman.

Aiyana stared at the picture.

Then at me.

“Who is that?””

I turned the photograph over.

On the back, there was a handwritten note.

My blood ran cold.

Because the note had my name.

“Corvin Torne was never supposed to inherit this land.””

Aiyana read the words.

Then looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

Before I could answer, a loud crash came from above.

The cabin floor shook.

Someone had found the entrance.

And then Caleb shouted:

“Open the chamber, Corvin.””

His voice echoed through the hidden room.

“Your grandfather left something for you.””

I froze.

“My grandfather?””

I had never told anyone about him.

Because I never knew him.

May you like

Aiyana looked at me.

And for the first time, she seemed just as confused as I was.
