Chapter 4: The Door Under the Floor

I had heard strange things in the desert before.

Coyotes calling at night.

Trees cracking under heavy winds.

Old buildings shifting as the temperature changed.

But I had never heard something beneath my own floor.

Something that sounded like it was waiting.

Aiyana grabbed the lantern.

“Do not move.””

I stared at her.

“You just told me there was a hidden room under my cabin, and now you are telling me not to move?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

Her eyes remained fixed on the floor.

“It will.””

I reached for my rifle.

She noticed.

“This will not help you.””

“Maybe not.””

I looked down.

“But it helps me feel better.””

For the first time, I saw the smallest hint of a smile on her face.

Then it disappeared.

The third knock came.

Slow.

Heavy.

From beneath the boards.

I moved the table aside.

Years of dust covered the floor near the fireplace.

But when I cleared away the dirt, I saw something I had never noticed.

A thin line.

A shape.

A hidden outline beneath the wood.

My heart started beating faster.

I knelt down.

“This was here the whole time?””

Aiyana nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who built it?””

She hesitated.

“My ancestors.””

I looked at her.

“Then why is it under my cabin?””

“Because your cabin was built on top of something older.””

I ran my fingers along the edge.

There was no handle.

No lock.

Nothing obvious.

Then Aiyana pointed toward a small mark carved into the wood.

A symbol.

I had seen it before.

On old stones near the northern edge of my property.

“You recognize it,” she said.

I shook my head.

“I have seen it.””

“Where?””

“Near the canyon.””

Her expression changed.

“That means the boundary is still intact.””

I stood.

“The boundary?””

Before she could answer, a sudden noise came from outside.

A horse.

Then another.

Someone was moving around the cabin.

I reached for my rifle.

Aiyana immediately stepped toward the window.

Her face became cold.

“They came back.””

“Caleb?””

“No.””

She looked outside.

“Someone worse.””

I moved beside her.

In the darkness, several figures stood near the edge of the property.

Not Apache.

Not familiar.

They carried equipment.

Tools.

They were searching.

One man pointed toward my cabin.

Another moved toward the barn.

Anger rose in my chest.

“They think they can just walk onto my land?””

Aiyana looked at me.

“They do not think they are trespassing.””

“What does that mean?””

“They believe this place belongs to them.””

I stepped away from the window.

“Then they are about to learn something.””

Aiyana grabbed my arm.

“Corvin.””

I stopped.

Her hand was strong.

But her expression was different.

Concerned.

“You do not understand what you are facing.””

I looked at her.

“Then explain it.””

She was silent.

Finally, she said:

“My father disappeared because of this place.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

“He was searching for the truth about what was hidden here.””

“And?””

“He never returned.””

The room became still.

I looked toward the hidden door beneath the floor.

Suddenly, it felt different.

Not like a mystery.

Like a warning.

Outside, a man shouted.

“We know someone is inside!””

I moved toward the door.

Aiyana stopped me.

“Wait.””

“Why?””

“Because if they open this door before we do…”

She looked down.

“…they will destroy everything.””

I stared at her.

“How do you know?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because my father spent his final days protecting what was behind it.””

The people outside moved closer.

Their footsteps grew louder.

Then someone kicked the cabin door.

The entire building shook.

“Open up!””

I looked at Aiyana.

She looked back.

And in that moment, I understood something.

The Apache warriors surrounding my ranch were not here because I had saved Aiyana.

They were here because my ranch had become the last place standing between the past and the people trying to erase it.

The cabin door shook again.

A crack appeared in the wood.

Then a voice came from outside.

A voice I recognized.

Caleb Voss.

“You have one chance, Corvin.””

I raised my rifle.

“What do you want?””

His answer chilled me.

“I want what is buried under your feet.””

Aiyana stepped closer to the hidden door.

And whispered:

“Then we have to find it first.””

May you like

The cabin door broke open.

And beneath us, the hidden room finally unlocked itself.
