Chapter 8: Vanessa Finally Tells Me Why She Hated Me
I didn’t open the door.
Robert locked it.
Vanessa knocked again.
“Emily, please.””
Her voice sounded different.
No arrogance.
No sharpness.
No smug little laugh.
Just fear.
“Why should I trust you?”” I asked.
“Because I’m the only person left who can tell you what happened.””
Robert looked at me.
“Don’t.””
I turned toward him.
“You told me to find Rachel.””
“I know.””
“And Rachel disappeared.””
His expression tightened.
“What?””
“She stopped answering my calls.””
He looked genuinely shocked.
“She wouldn’t do that.””
Vanessa spoke from the hallway.
“She didn’t disappear.””
Robert looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa answered through the door.
“Nathan found her.””
A terrible silence followed.
I unlocked the door.
Robert grabbed my arm.
“Emily.””
I pulled away.
“I’m done being protected.””
I opened it.
Vanessa stood alone.
Her makeup was perfect, but her face was pale.
She was holding an old leather folder against her chest.
She looked at me.
Then at Robert.
“So he finally told you.””
I stared at her.
“Told me what?””
She looked down.
“The scholarship.””
I folded my arms.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“My father forced Robert to alter your application.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know what he planned to do after.””
Vanessa continued.
“I did.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
The word landed like a slap.
“I knew your grades had been changed. I knew your recommendation letters disappeared. I knew my father paid someone at the school to make sure I received the scholarship.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was stupid.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I was seventeen.””
“So was I.””
She looked down.
“You were better than me.””
I said nothing.
“You worked harder. You had a future. Everyone knew it.””
Her voice shook.
“And I couldn't stand it.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked less like the woman who had humiliated me in the restaurant and more like the teenager I remembered.
But I wasn't ready to forgive her.
“You ruined my chance because you were jealous?””
“No.””
She looked directly at me.
“My father told me the scholarship would be mine.””
A pause.
“Then he told me if I refused, you would lose everything.””
I frowned.
“What did that mean?””
“He showed me documents proving your father's business was in debt.””
I felt confused.
“My father wasn't in debt.””
“He wasn't.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I know that now.””
She opened the leather folder.
Inside were copies of old correspondence.
My father's signature appeared on several pages.
“The debt was fabricated.””
I looked up.
“Why would Nathan do that?””
“Because your father had already started investigating him.””
Robert nodded slowly.
“Your father discovered the accounts.””
Vanessa continued.
“My father thought if he destroyed your family financially, your father would stop.””
“He didn't.””
“No.””
Her voice became softer.
“He fought back.””
I turned another page.
There was a handwritten note.
My father's handwriting.
*Nathan knows I'm close.*
Another page.
*If anything happens to me, the evidence must reach Emily.*
My hands trembled.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because my father threatened me too.””
I looked at her.
“He told me that if I talked, he would send my younger brother to a boarding school overseas and make sure I never saw him again.””
I stared at her.
“You had fifteen years.””
“I know.””
“You had fifteen years to tell me.””
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I was ashamed.””
The silence between us was brutal.
Then I asked the question that mattered most.
“Did you know my father was going to die?””
Vanessa's expression shattered.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I knew my father was meeting him that night.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
“An underground parking garage near his office.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Vanessa, what are you saying?””
“I followed my father.””
She looked at me.
“I saw them arguing.””
“And then?””
“Your father left.””
She swallowed hard.
“My father stayed behind.””
“What happened after my father left?””
Vanessa’s hands began shaking.
“I heard Nathan call someone.””
“Who?””
“I couldn't hear the whole conversation.””
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“I heard one sentence.””
“What sentence?””
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“Make sure Michael Carter never reaches home.””
The room went silent.
Robert looked horrified.
I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.
“You heard him say that?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was terrified.””
“You knew my father could be in danger.””
“I was seventeen!””
“And I was his daughter!””
Vanessa began crying.
“I know.””
I turned away.
For years, I had remembered Vanessa as the cruel girl who laughed when I lost everything.
Now I understood something worse.
She had known my father was in danger.
And she had stayed silent.
“Did Nathan kill him?””
“I don't know.””
“You were there.””
“I saw your father drive away.””
“Then how did he die?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“His car was found on the highway.””
Robert suddenly looked toward the folder.
“What is that?””
Vanessa froze.
I took the document he was pointing at.
An insurance report.
The official report said my father's brakes failed.
Accidental mechanical failure.
But beneath it was another paper.
A private mechanic's note.
*Brake line appears deliberately damaged.*
My blood ran cold.
The death certificate had never mentioned sabotage.
Someone had made sure the truth disappeared.
Then Vanessa reached into her folder again.
“I kept one more thing.””
She pulled out a small audio recorder.
“I stole this from my father's office after he died.””
Robert stared at it.
“You had this all these years?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you destroy it?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because I knew one day I would need proof.””
I pressed the button.
Static crackled.
Then a man's voice came through.
Nathan Caldwell.
“Emily is getting too close.””
Another voice answered.
A voice I recognized instantly.
My uncle Robert.
“We'll handle it.””
My entire body went cold.
I slowly turned toward Robert.
He looked at me.
“Emily…”
But the recording continued.
Nathan's voice said:
“And after the father, make sure the daughter never learns who betrayed her.””
I stopped breathing.
Robert stepped backward.
“Emily, please let me explain.””
Then the recording captured one final sentence.
A sentence that destroyed everything I thought I knew about my family.
Robert's voice whispered:
“She'll never know I was the one who loosened the brake line.””
I stared at my uncle.
May you like
He began to cry.
And then, before I could move, he dropped to his knees.
