Chapter 6: The Betrayal Inside My Own Family

I stood frozen in my father’s empty living room.

Vanessa’s words repeated in my mind.

*Your own family.*

I wanted to believe she was lying.

That was what Vanessa did.

She twisted situations.

She created doubt.

She made people question reality.

But then I looked at my father’s letter sitting in my hand.

And I realized something terrifying.

For the first time in fifteen years, Vanessa and my father’s words were pointing in the same direction.

Someone else was involved.

I called Rachel immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

“Emily?””

“Vanessa came to my father’s house.””

A long silence followed.

Then Rachel whispered:

“She knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That you’re getting close to the truth.””

I sat down.

“Rachel, I found a letter from my father.””

My voice cracked slightly.

“He said Vanessa didn’t change my scholarship documents alone.””

Rachel became quiet.

“Who helped her?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the paper again.

“He said someone in my family.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Emily…”

The way she said my name scared me.

“What?””

“There is something I never told you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Please don’t tell me there’s more.””

“There is.””

I waited.

“Your father came to the school after the scholarship decision.””

I frowned.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Because he found out who helped Vanessa.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Before Rachel answered, someone knocked on the door.

I looked up.

Nobody should have known I was there.

“Emily?””

I didn’t answer.

The knock came again.

Stronger.

Rachel heard it through the phone.

“Are you alone?””

“No.””

A lie.

I was completely alone.

But admitting that suddenly felt dangerous.

“Do not open that door,” Rachel said.

I slowly walked toward the window.

A man stood outside.

I recognized him immediately.

My uncle, Robert.

My father’s younger brother.

The man who had attended every family gathering.

The man who had comforted me after my father’s death.

The man who always told me he was proud of me.

I opened the door slightly.

“Uncle Robert?””

His face changed when he saw me.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Emily.””

“What are you doing here?””

He looked past me into the house.

“You found something.””

It wasn’t a question.

I stepped back.

“How do you know?””

He rubbed his face.

“I was hoping you never would.””

My stomach tightened.

“Were you the one who helped Vanessa?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“Emily…”

I felt something inside me break.

“No.””

He looked down.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

My voice rose.

“You destroyed my scholarship.””

“No.””

He shook his head quickly.

“I didn’t destroy it.””

“Then what did you do?””

He looked away.

“I only changed one document.””

The room went silent.

One document.

One small action.

One decision that changed my life.

“Why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because Vanessa’s father threatened my job.””

I stared at him.

“You worked for him.””

He nodded.

“He controlled the company.””

“And you chose him over me.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I chose fear.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Do you know what that cost me?””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stepped closer.

“You watched me believe I wasn’t good enough.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“You watched me think I had failed.””

Robert looked devastated.

“I tried to fix it.””

“When?””

“After your father found out.””

I froze.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Robert looked down.

“Because he wanted to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Protect me from what?””

Robert hesitated.

Then he said:

“From the truth about Vanessa’s family.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He looked toward the window.

“Vanessa’s father wasn’t just protecting his daughter.””

A pause.

“He was protecting himself.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

One sentence.

*Stop digging, Emily. Your father didn’t die naturally.*

I felt the world tilt.

I looked at Robert.

He had gone completely pale.

And that was when I knew.

Whatever happened fifteen years ago…

Was only the beginning.
