Chapter 4: The Woman Who Stole My Future

Rachel Miller called again two hours later.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Emily.””

Her voice sounded calmer.

But still afraid.

“Are you alone?””

I looked at Daniel sitting beside me in the office.

“No. My husband is here.””

“That’s good.””

A pause.

“I need someone else to know this.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“Put her on speaker.””

I did.

Rachel continued.

“Fifteen years ago, the Westbrook Foundation scholarship was supposed to go to Emily.””

I looked at Daniel.

“I know.””

“No,” Rachel said.

“You don’t.””

Her voice became heavier.

“You don’t know how bad it was.””

I sat down.

“What happened?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“The night before the final decision, someone accessed the scholarship records.””

Daniel frowned.

“Someone changed the files?””

“Yes.””

I felt a knot forming in my chest.

“Changed what?””

“Your application.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

Rachel continued.

“Your volunteer hours were reduced. Your recommendation letters were removed from the system. Your essay score was changed.””

I couldn’t speak.

For years, I had believed I simply won because I worked harder.

I believed Vanessa hated me because she was jealous.

But now…

Someone had tried to erase my achievement.

“Who did it?”” Daniel asked.

Rachel was silent.

Then she answered.

“Vanessa Caldwell.””

My entire body went still.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Rachel sighed.

“I’m sorry.””

“She couldn’t have.””

“She had access because her father was on the school board.””

I remembered.

Vanessa’s father had always been powerful.

He donated money to the school.

Everyone respected him.

Everyone listened to him.

“But why?”” I whispered.

Rachel’s voice softened.

“Because Vanessa believed that scholarship belonged to her.””

I closed my eyes.

A painful memory returned.

The day the winners were announced.

Vanessa had walked away before my name was even called.

I thought she was embarrassed.

I thought she was hurt.

I never imagined she had been hiding something.

“She destroyed my application?””

“Yes.””

“And the school never found out?””

“They did.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

Rachel hesitated.

“This is the part I regret.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What happened?””

“The committee discovered irregularities.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because Vanessa’s father pressured the school.””

I felt sick.

“He threatened funding.””

Rachel’s voice trembled.

“The school wanted to protect itself.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years believing I had simply moved on from a painful friendship.

But Vanessa had been carrying a secret.

And now I understood something.

The wine.

The humiliation.

The way she looked at me.

It wasn’t because she thought I had failed.

It was because she knew I had succeeded.

And she couldn’t stand it.

“Why are you telling me now?”” I asked.

Rachel was quiet.

Then she answered.

“Because Vanessa is trying to do something similar again.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What do you mean?””

“She has been targeting someone.””

“Who?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Your restaurant.””

Daniel and I looked at each other.

“What?””

“She has been telling investors that your business records are suspicious.””

My stomach dropped.

“She’s trying to damage us?””

“Yes.””

Rachel paused.

“And there’s something else.””

“What?””

“She recently requested old documents from the scholarship archive.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Rachel’s voice became urgent.

“But Emily, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“She doesn’t just want your business.””

I waited.

“She wants to rewrite the story of your entire life.””

The call ended.

I sat there silently.

Daniel reached for my hand.

“She’s afraid of you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at the old photograph.

“She’s afraid of what happens when people finally learn the truth.””

At that moment, a notification appeared on Daniel’s computer.

An email had arrived.

The subject line made both of us freeze.

*CONFIDENTIAL: Evidence Regarding Emily Carter’s Restaurant Ownership*

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a scanned document.

A signature.

A date.

And a name.

The person who sent it was not Vanessa.

May you like

It was someone much closer.

Someone who had been protecting her secret for fifteen years.
