Chapter 7: The Man In The Photograph

I stared at the picture on my phone until my eyes started hurting.

My brother.

Michael.

Standing outside the DNA clinic with Emily.

I zoomed in.

The image was clear.

There was no mistake.

Michael was wearing the same gray jacket he always wore during winter.

Emily was holding a folder.

The date on the picture was three weeks before my son was born.

Three weeks before I walked into that hospital room believing my life was finally complete.

My first thought wasn’t anger.

It was confusion.

Why?

Why would my brother meet my wife behind my back?

Why would they go to a DNA clinic together?

I called the number immediately.

It rang twice.

Then a man answered.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“This is Dr. Aaron Mitchell.””

“You sent me the picture.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

There was a pause.

Because whatever he was about to say mattered.

“I think you deserve the full truth.””

I gripped the phone.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became sharper.

“For days, I’ve been hearing about secrets. Tests. Lies. Everyone protecting me by keeping me in the dark.””

The doctor stayed quiet.

Then he said:

“I didn’t know the situation would become this complicated.””

“What situation?””

“The DNA samples.””

I sat down.

“Explain.””

Dr. Mitchell sighed.

“The first test result was unusual.””

“I already know there was an issue.””

“No.””

His voice became serious.

“You don’t know the whole issue.””

I waited.

“The first sample that arrived at our laboratory was not consistent with the sample we received later.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone submitted different samples.””

My hand went cold.

“Are you saying someone changed them?””

“I’m saying the samples did not match.””

Silence.

I looked at the photograph again.

Emily.

Michael.

The clinic.

“Why was my brother there?””

Another pause.

“That’s something you need to ask him.””

I stood up.

“No. You called me. You tell me.””

The doctor lowered his voice.

“Your brother was the person who requested a review.””

I froze.

“Michael?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he suspected the original result had been manipulated.””

I didn’t know whether to feel grateful or betrayed.

My brother had been searching for the truth.

But he had done it without telling me.

“Where is the doctor’s office?””

“I’ll send you the address.””

I hung up.

Ten minutes later, I was driving.

My entire life felt like it was being rebuilt around me.

Every person I trusted had another layer I didn’t know about.

When I arrived, Michael was already waiting outside.

He looked tired.

Like he hadn’t slept either.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t answer.

He looked at my face.

“You know.””

“Yes.””

His shoulders dropped.

“I was hoping I could explain before you found out like this.””

I laughed.

“Explain what? Why you were meeting my wife behind my back?””

Michael looked down.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“Then why did you?””

He looked at me.

“Because Emily asked me for help.””

“Help with what?””

“She was terrified.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Of losing you.””

That confused me.

“What?””

Michael stepped closer.

“Daniel, she wasn’t trying to hide another man.””

“Then what was she hiding?””

“The truth about the first test.””

I waited.

“She came to me because she thought something was wrong.””

“Why you?””

Michael looked away.

“Because she knew I would tell her the truth.””

That answer bothered me.

“Why didn’t she come to me?””

“Because your reaction scared her.””

I felt anger rising.

“She should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

Michael looked at me.

“But you need to understand something. Emily was not trying to protect Jacob.””

“Then who?””

Michael hesitated.

“Your mother-in-law.””

I stared at him.

“Linda?””

He nodded.

“She pressured Emily from the beginning.””

“How?””

“She kept telling Emily that you would leave if you found out about Jacob. She told her that you weren’t ready to raise a child connected to another man.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It gets worse.””

Michael took a breath.

“Linda was the one who contacted the clinic first.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She wanted the test.””

“Why?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because she believed the baby might not be yours.””

I looked away.

Everything was becoming clearer.

But one thing still didn’t make sense.

“Then why did Emily name the baby Jacob?””

Michael’s face softened.

“That wasn’t about the ex.””

I looked at him.

“Then what was it?””

He answered quietly.

“Because Emily lost a child before.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You know the story.””

Michael paused.

“You don’t know the promise.””

I felt a chill.

“What promise?””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Emily.

I almost didn’t pick up.

But I did.

Her voice came through immediately.

“Daniel.””

She sounded terrified.

“Where are you?””

I looked at Michael.

“Why?””

“Because Linda knows you talked to the doctor.””

My heart stopped.

“How?””

Emily whispered:

“Because she’s not the one who changed the test.””

I frowned.

“What are you saying?””

There was silence.

May you like

Then Emily said:

“Daniel… the person who switched the DNA samples was someone you trust.””
