Chapter 4: The Secret We Both Carried

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat in the nursery until sunrise.

The room that once represented the beginning of my family now felt like a place filled with unanswered questions.

Every object reminded me of something.

The crib I built.

The tiny clothes Emily chose.

The pictures we took during pregnancy.

The future I imagined.

I kept asking myself one question.

How much of my marriage had been real?

At 8:00 the next morning, I drove to the coffee shop listed in Jacob’s message.

I almost turned around three times.

But I needed answers.

Not excuses.

Not half-truths.

Answers.

Jacob was sitting in the corner when I arrived.

I recognized him immediately.

Not because I had seen pictures.

Because Emily had once mentioned him.

Tall.

Dark hair.

A small scar above his eyebrow.

He looked older than I expected.

Tired.

When he saw me, he stood.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t shake his hand.

“You know who I am.””

He nodded.

“I do.””

“Then start talking.””

Jacob looked down.

“I know this isn’t easy.””

“No, you don’t.””

He accepted that.

Then he sat down.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

I leaned forward.

“What exactly is ‘this’?””

He took a breath.

“Your son.””

The words hit me.

“My son.””

Jacob looked at me.

“Yes.””

The confidence in his voice bothered me.

“What are you saying?””

He reached into his jacket.

For a second, I thought he was pulling out another secret.

Instead, he placed an old photograph on the table.

It showed Emily.

Years younger.

Standing beside him.

They looked happy.

Too happy.

“She never told you about the accident?””

I frowned.

“What accident?””

Jacob’s expression changed.

“The reason we broke up.””

I waited.

“Emily was driving home one night. A truck ran a red light. She survived, but she lost the baby she was carrying.””

I froze.

“What?””

Jacob continued.

“She was pregnant with my child.””

My hands tightened.

“Emily told me she never had children.””

“She didn’t.””

His voice became quiet.

“Because the baby didn’t survive.””

I looked away.

My mind was racing.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because the name Jacob wasn’t about me.””

I looked back at him.

“What?””

He pointed at the photograph.

“That was our son’s name.””

I felt like the air disappeared from the room.

“No.””

“She chose that name years ago. After we lost him.””

I stared at him.

My anger became something else.

Confusion.

Pain.

“She named our son after a baby she lost?””

Jacob nodded.

“She never explained that to you?””

“No.””

He looked down.

“That sounds like Emily.””

I didn’t like hearing him speak about her that way.

“You still love her?””

Jacob looked surprised.

Then shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why are you involved?””

“Because I got a call from her yesterday.””

I frowned.

“What did she say?””

“She asked me what I would do if you found out.””

I leaned back.

“And what did you tell her?””

Jacob looked directly at me.

“I told her she needed to stop hiding the truth.””

The words stayed between us.

For months, I thought I was fighting against a ghost.

An old relationship.

A forgotten man.

But maybe I had misunderstood everything.

Maybe the real problem wasn’t Jacob.

Maybe it was the secrets Emily kept buried.

I stood.

“I need to go.””

Jacob stopped me.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

“There’s something else.””

I waited.

His face became serious.

“Before you leave, you need to know why Emily was so afraid of that DNA test.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

Jacob looked at me.

“The test result you saw…”

He paused.

“It wasn’t the only one.””

I didn’t move.

“What?””

Jacob lowered his voice.

“Emily already took a DNA test before your son was born.””

A chill ran through me.

“Why?””

Jacob looked toward the window.

“Because someone told her the baby might not be yours.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who told her?””

Jacob’s answer came quietly.

May you like

And the name he said next changed everything.

“Her mother.””
