Chapter 5: The Warning From Her Mother

I drove back home with one thought repeating in my head.

Her mother knew.

I had spent hours believing the biggest secret in my marriage was Jacob.

I thought I was dealing with an old love.

A forgotten relationship.

A name that should never have been chosen.

But I was wrong.

There was another person standing behind all of this.

Emily’s mother.

Linda.

The woman who had hugged me at our wedding and called me “the son she never had.””

The woman who cried when Emily announced the pregnancy.

The woman who had looked me in the eyes and told me I was going to be a wonderful father.

Now I wondered what she knew.

And how long she had known it.

When I pulled into the driveway, Emily’s car was already there.

For a moment, I considered leaving.

Driving somewhere.

Anywhere.

But I was tired of running from conversations that needed to happen.

I walked inside.

Emily was sitting at the kitchen table.

Her face looked exhausted.

There were two untouched cups of coffee in front of her.

“You met him.””

It wasn’t a question.

I put my keys down.

“Yes.””

She looked nervous.

“What did he tell you?””

I stared at her.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

“On whether you’re finally ready to tell me the truth.””

Emily lowered her eyes.

I saw tears forming.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“I spent yesterday finding out my wife named our child after a man from her past. Then I discovered that man was connected to a child you lost before we met. Then I found out your mother knew something about a DNA test before I did.””

Emily looked up.

“You talked to Jacob?””

“Yes.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was afraid this would happen.””

“What?””

“That you would hear everything from someone else.””

I leaned against the counter.

“Then tell me.””

She was silent.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your son almost wasn’t your son.””

The sentence hit harder than I expected.

Not because I believed it.

Because she had allowed me to live with that possibility alone.

“What does that mean?””

Emily wiped her face.

“During my pregnancy, my mother started asking questions.””

“Questions about me?””

“Yes.””

I waited.

“She said you were too perfect.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She said you worked too much. That you were always trying to prove something. She said men like that sometimes hide things.””

I shook my head.

“That’s why she suspected me?””

“No.””

Emily looked away.

“She suspected me.””

The room became quiet.

I stepped closer.

“What?””

“She thought I wasn’t over Jacob.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because maybe that was the question I should have been asking from the beginning.

“Was she right?””

Emily looked at me.

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

“I loved Jacob once. But I built a life with you.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me everything?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That you would think our marriage was just me replacing him.””

I stared at her.

“Emily, you hid the biggest parts of your past from me. Then you named our son after him. How exactly was I supposed to feel?””

She covered her face.

“I know.””

“No, I don’t think you do.””

My voice cracked.

“I was standing in that hospital room thinking I was finally meeting my family. Then I saw another man’s name on my baby.””

Emily started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology was quiet.

Real.

But I still needed answers.

“What did your mother do?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“She convinced me to take a paternity test.””

I froze.

“Without telling me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She said if there was even a small chance the baby wasn’t yours, we needed to know.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So your mother thought I wasn’t the father?””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“She thought I was still emotionally connected to Jacob.””

I stared at her.

“And the result?””

Emily didn’t answer.

That silence scared me.

“Emily.””

She looked up.

“The test said you were the father.””

I exhaled.

For the first time in days, I felt a small piece of relief.

“But there’s more.””

Of course there was.

There was always more.

“What?””

Emily’s hands trembled.

“My mother never believed the result.””

“Why?””

“She said the timing didn’t make sense.””

“What timing?””

Emily looked at me.

“The day the test sample was collected.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What about it?””

“She said someone had switched it.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

Emily didn’t answer.

A knock came from the front door.

Both of us turned.

Emily’s face changed.

She knew who it was.

I walked toward the entrance.

When I opened the door, Linda was standing there.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

“Daniel,” she said.

I didn’t move.

“Why are you here?””

Her eyes shifted toward Emily.

Then back to me.

“Because you deserve to know what my daughter refused to tell you.””

Emily stood up.

“Mom, stop.””

Linda ignored her.

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a folder.

“I have proof.””

My heart sank.

“Proof of what?””

May you like

Linda looked directly at me.

“That Jacob Carter is not the only secret Emily kept from you.””
