Chapter 9: The Last Piece of the Betrayal
Olivia arrived twenty minutes later.
She walked into the archive alone.
No expensive dress.
No perfect makeup.
No confident smile.
She looked like someone who had finally stopped pretending.
My first instinct was to turn away.
But I didn’t.
Because after everything that happened, I needed answers.
She stopped a few feet from me.
“Daniel.””
I said nothing.
Her eyes moved toward my father.
“Mr. Henderson.””
My father nodded.
“Olivia.””
There was no anger in his voice.
That almost made it worse.
Because my father had always been kind.
Even when people hurt him.
Even when they didn’t deserve it.
Olivia held a small recorder in her hand.
“This is what I found.””
She placed it on the table.
My father looked at it.
“Where did you get this?””
“My mother’s office.””
She swallowed.
“I went there after I left the board meeting.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because I finally realized something.””
“What?””
“That I wasn’t the person they were using.””
She looked at me.
“I was the person they were hiding behind.””
Nobody spoke.
Olivia pressed play.
At first, there was only background noise.
Then Margaret’s voice filled the room.
“Once Daniel signs the marriage agreement, the trust review will begin.””
My stomach tightened.
Then Thomas spoke.
“He trusts her.””
Margaret laughed softly.
“He trusts everyone.””
The recording continued.
“She only needs to keep him comfortable until the transfer happens.””
My hands curled into fists.
Olivia closed her eyes.
I could hear the pain in her breathing.
Then Margaret spoke again.
“And after the ownership changes, Daniel will have nothing left.””
Thomas replied.
“What about James?””
A pause.
Then Margaret said:
“James will lose everything he spent his life protecting.””
The recording ended.
The room was silent.
I looked at Olivia.
“How long have you had this?””
“Since tonight.””
“But you knew about the plan.””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Maybe more than another lie.
“I knew my mother wanted your family’s company.””
“Did you know she wanted to destroy my father?””
Olivia looked down.
“Not at first.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She wiped her eyes.
“My mother told me it was only business.””
I laughed quietly.
“Business?””
She looked at me.
“I was wrong.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my father asked the question I couldn’t.
“Why did you come here?””
Olivia looked at him.
“Because I heard my mother talking to Thomas.””
Her voice became shaky.
“They were planning their next move.””
“What move?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“They knew you found the archive.””
My father immediately turned.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
She looked terrified.
“But they said someone inside your company was helping them.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Who?””
Olivia shook her head.
“I didn’t hear the name.””
Then she looked at me.
“But I heard something else.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
“They said Daniel wasn’t supposed to find the documents.””
My father frowned.
“Why?””
Olivia looked at the floor.
“Because they had another plan.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What plan?””
She took a deep breath.
“They wanted Daniel to sign everything voluntarily.””
I stared at her.
“And if I refused?””
Her voice dropped.
“They planned to make it look like you were mentally unstable.””
The room went completely still.
My father’s face changed.
“They were going to challenge his ability to control the trust.””
Olivia nodded.
“My mother said nobody would believe a young man who suddenly discovered a billion-dollar inheritance and started fighting everyone around him.””
I understood.
They didn’t want to steal from me.
They wanted everyone to believe they were saving me from myself.
They would turn me into the villain.
The greedy son.
The unstable heir.
The person nobody trusted.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel Henderson.””
I recognized it immediately.
Thomas.
“Where are you?””
He ignored my question.
“You found the archive.””
I didn’t respond.
“You’re probably feeling proud right now.””
I looked at my father.
“How did you know?””
Thomas laughed.
“Because your father always makes the same mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“He thinks hiding information protects people.””
My jaw tightened.
“You’re done.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“I’m just getting started.””
The call went silent for a second.
Then he said:
“Check the news.””
The line disconnected.
Robert immediately opened his phone.
His face changed.
“What?””
He turned the screen toward us.
A breaking news alert appeared.
*Henderson Global Chairman Accused of Financial Fraud After Secret Documents Surface.*
My father stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
Robert kept scrolling.
“They released internal documents.””
I looked closer.
My stomach dropped.
The documents showed illegal transfers.
Unauthorized payments.
Hidden accounts.
And every signature belonged to…
James Henderson.
My father.
Olivia covered her mouth.
“No.””
I looked at my father.
He wasn’t angry.
He was confused.
Because he knew.
Someone had copied his identity.
Again.
Then Robert said the words that changed everything.
“Sir…”
My father looked up.
“What?””
Robert’s voice was low.
“The documents were released by someone with access to the executive archive.””
Everyone looked at me.
Because there was only one person who had that access.
Me.
I felt the world stop.
Thomas had not just attacked my father.
He had used me.
My father stepped toward me.
“Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“I didn’t do this.””
“I know.””
His answer came instantly.
And that was the moment I realized something.
After all the secrets.
After all the lies.
My father still believed me.
Then Robert’s phone rang again.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“Sir…”
“What now?””
May you like
Robert looked at me.
“The police are outside.””
