Chapter 8: The Hidden Room
The key was heavier than it looked.
I held it in my hand while Robert drove me and my father across the city.
Neither of us spoke.
There were too many questions.
Too many missing pieces.
Finally, I broke the silence.
“Where are we going?””
My father looked out the window.
“Somewhere I hoped you would never need to see.””
That answer bothered me.
“Dad.””
He sighed.
“When your grandfather died, he left instructions.””
“About the trust?””
“Yes.””
“What kind of instructions?””
He looked at me.
“About enemies.””
I frowned.
“You knew someone would try this?””
“I knew Thomas would.””
The car stopped in front of an old building.
It wasn’t impressive.
No security.
No luxury entrance.
Just an abandoned-looking office building downtown.
I looked at my father.
“This is where the records are?””
He nodded.
“Your grandfather owned this building before Henderson Global became what it is today.””
We walked inside.
The building smelled like dust and old paper.
Robert led us down a hallway.
At the end was a locked door.
My father stepped aside.
“You do it.””
I inserted the key.
The lock turned.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room.
A hidden archive.
Shelves filled with boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
My father walked in slowly.
“I haven’t been here in twenty years.””
I looked around.
“Why?””
“Because I hoped the past would stay buried.””
I found a box with my name on it.
Daniel.
My hands froze.
“This is mine?””
“Yes.””
I opened it.
Inside were letters.
Photos.
And a sealed envelope.
I opened the envelope first.
The letter was from my grandfather.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, it means the people I feared were never stopped.*
I read faster.
*Your father was chosen to protect the company, but you were chosen to protect the family.*
I looked at my father.
“What does this mean?””
He looked nervous.
The letter continued.
*There will come a time when someone tries to take what belongs to you. They will use love, marriage, and trust as weapons.*
My heartbeat increased.
Marriage.
I looked at my father.
“He knew?””
“He suspected.””
I kept reading.
*Never trust anyone who demands your loyalty before earning your respect.*
The words felt painfully familiar.
I thought about Olivia.
Margaret.
The wedding.
Then I found another document.
A marriage agreement.
My name.
Olivia’s name.
But this version was different.
It wasn’t the agreement Olivia had mentioned.
It was a warning.
A legal analysis showing that someone marrying into the Henderson family could gain access under specific circumstances.
Attached was a signature.
Margaret Whitmore.
My blood went cold.
“She planned this years ago.””
My father nodded.
“She did.””
Robert picked up another file.
“Sir.””
He looked shocked.
“What?””
“We found the original trust amendment.””
My father walked over.
I followed.
The document was dated twenty years earlier.
And there was one thing that immediately caught my attention.
A handwritten note at the bottom.
Signed by my grandfather.
*Thomas Henderson is permanently removed from all inheritance rights.*
Thomas didn’t just lose the company.
He lost everything.
My father looked at me.
“Now you know why he hates me.””
I closed the file.
“No.””
My father looked surprised.
“What?””
“I know why he’s angry.””
I looked at the document.
“But anger doesn’t excuse what he did.””
For the first time, my father smiled slightly.
“You sound like your grandfather.””
Then Robert’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed instantly.
“What happened?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
“It’s Olivia.””
I felt my body tense.
“What about her?””
“She left the Whitmore house.””
“Why?””
Robert hesitated.
“She found something.””
“What?””
He looked down.
“A recording.””
My father stepped closer.
“What recording?””
Robert swallowed.
“One that proves Margaret and Thomas planned the entire wedding.””
I stared at him.
“Where is Olivia now?””
Robert looked at his phone.
“She’s coming here.””
My father frowned.
“Why?””
Robert looked at me.
“Because she said there’s something in that recording you need to hear.””
The lights in the archive flickered.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Olivia.
*Daniel, I’m sorry. I should have told you before the wedding.*
Another message appeared.
*Your father wasn’t their real target.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then the final message came.
*You were.*
