Chapter 5: The Brother Who Returned
The door opened slowly.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Then the man standing outside stepped into the conference room.
He was older than my father, but not by much. His hair was completely gray, his face lined with years of anger, and his expensive suit looked perfectly tailored.
But what shocked me most was not his appearance.
It was my father’s reaction.
My father, the man who had faced angry investors, business failures, and every hardship life could throw at him, looked like he had just seen a ghost.
“Thomas.””
The name left his mouth like a warning.
The man smiled.
“Hello, James.””
I stared at him.
The uncle I had been told was dead was standing ten feet away from me.
Alive.
Calm.
Confident.
Thomas Henderson looked at me.
“So this is Daniel.””
I stepped forward.
“You’re supposed to be dead.””
He laughed quietly.
“That’s what your father wanted everyone to believe.””
My father immediately moved between us.
“Leave.””
Thomas looked amused.
“You haven’t changed.””
“Leave my building.””
“This isn’t your building anymore.””
The room went silent.
My father’s expression hardened.
“What did you say?””
Thomas walked closer and placed a small envelope on the table.
“I said things are changing.””
I looked at the envelope.
“What is that?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your inheritance.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“My what?””
My father grabbed the envelope.
“Don’t touch it.””
Thomas smiled.
“You still think you can protect him from the truth.””
My father’s voice became colder.
“Daniel doesn’t need to hear your lies.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Ask him.””
I didn’t move.
“Ask him what?””
Thomas leaned against the table.
“Ask your father why he never told you that Henderson Global was supposed to belong to both of us.””
I looked at my father.
He said nothing.
That silence bothered me.
“Dad?””
He looked away.
Thomas smiled.
“There it is.””
I felt anger rising.
“Stop playing games.””
Thomas turned toward me.
“You think your father is a simple man who gave everything up for his son?””
He laughed.
“That’s the story he wanted you to believe.””
My father slammed his hand on the table.
“Enough.””
Thomas ignored him.
“Ask him about the night your grandfather changed the will.””
I looked at my father.
“What night?””
My father’s face tightened.
“Thomas.””
“No,” Thomas said.
“He deserves to know.””
I waited.
My father closed his eyes.
And that scared me.
Because my father always had an answer.
Except now.
“Your grandfather was dying,” my father finally said.
Thomas continued.
“He made a decision.””
“What decision?””
My father looked at me.
“He left control of the company to me.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Half-truth.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Your grandfather wanted the company protected.””
“Because he knew I couldn’t control myself?”” Thomas snapped.
The anger in his voice filled the room.
For the first time, I saw why my father had been afraid of him.
Thomas wasn’t just bitter.
He was obsessed.
“You stole from the company,” my father said.
Thomas’s smile disappeared.
“I borrowed.””
“Millions of dollars?””
“I was investing.””
“You hid it.””
“Because you would have stopped me.””
“Yes.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“And that is why you were always chosen.””
I looked between them.
“You two have been fighting for decades.””
Thomas looked at me.
“No, Daniel.””
He pointed at my father.
“He has been winning for decades.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Olivia.
I looked down.
*Please don’t trust Thomas. He’s not telling you everything.*
Another message appeared.
*But my mother isn’t either.*
I looked up.
Thomas was watching me.
“You’re still talking to her?””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
He smiled.
“Because Olivia has always been predictable.””
My father looked at him sharply.
“What did you do?””
Thomas ignored him.
“She married you because Margaret told her to.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You know the version that makes you angry.””
He stepped closer.
“You don’t know the version that makes you question everything.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked at the envelope.
“Open it.””
My father grabbed it first.
Thomas didn’t stop him.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
My father read it.
Then his face changed.
“What is this?””
Thomas smiled.
“Something you should have told Daniel years ago.””
I reached for the paper.
My father hesitated.
Then handed it to me.
I read the first line.
My hands went cold.
It was a legal document.
A trust agreement.
With my name on it.
Daniel Henderson.
But the date was from twenty years ago.
The year I was only twelve.
I looked at my father.
“What is this?””
He looked devastated.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Before he could answer, Thomas spoke.
“Because your father wasn’t protecting you from money.””
He paused.
“He was protecting you from knowing that you were the real owner of Henderson Global.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my father.
My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.
May you like
Then Thomas said the one thing that made my blood run cold.
“And your wedding was the final step to take it away from you.””
