Chapter 7: The Name Grandma Chose

Robert stared at the final sentence.

Patricia stood beside the cabinet, crying quietly.

Ethan remained in the middle of the living room, unable to understand why his grandmother had written his name in a letter addressed to Lily.

“Dad,” he said.

“Read it.””

Robert looked up.

“Are you sure?””

Ethan nodded.

“I've spent the last few days being accused of something I didn't do. I think I deserve to know why Grandma's name is suddenly involved.””

Patricia shook her head.

“Robert, please don't.””

He unfolded the final portion of the letter.

Then he read.

“Ethan, if you are reading this, it means I was unable to explain everything myself. I chose you because you have always understood the difference between protecting someone and protecting their mistakes.””

Ethan swallowed.

Robert continued.

“I have placed Lily's inheritance in a trust. You are named as the person I trust to help protect her interests until she reaches the age specified in the legal documents. You must never allow anyone to use her future as payment for their present problems.””

Megan looked at Patricia.

Robert continued.

“If Patricia asks you to sign anything, make sure you understand every word. She knows about the trust, but she does not have permission to withdraw the money.””

The room fell completely silent.

Ethan stared at his mother.

“You knew?””

Patricia covered her face.

Robert lowered the letter.

“Patricia, you knew Ethan was named as the trustee?””

She nodded.

“For how long?””

“Since your mother died.””

Megan looked stunned.

“Then you've known for years?””

Patricia wiped her cheeks.

“I knew what the letter said.””

Ethan took a step toward her.

“Then why did you let everyone believe I stole Lily's bracelet?””

Patricia shook her head.

“I never said you stole it.””

“You said I had a habit of taking things. You told Dad I was going near her room. You made me look guilty before anybody even asked questions.””

“I was trying to avoid a bigger problem.””

“What bigger problem?””

Patricia looked at the letter.

“The trust.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“Explain.””

Patricia sat down.

“When your mother died, Claire told me about the money. She explained that Ethan was named to help protect it.””

Robert nodded.

“That's what the letter says.””

“But I didn't think it was fair.””

Megan frowned.

“What wasn't fair?””

“Your grandmother trusted Ethan with everything. She trusted him to make decisions about Lily's future. She didn't even discuss it with me.””

Robert stared at her.

“She didn't need to give you control of Lily's inheritance.””

“I'm her mother!””

“And Ethan is her brother. Grandma made her decision.””

Patricia shook her head.

“I thought I could manage the money myself.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You wanted access to it.””

Patricia didn't answer.

Robert sat down.

“How much did you withdraw?””

“I told you. I don't know exactly.””

“Then we'll find out.””

Patricia looked up.

“You're making this sound like a crime.””

Robert's voice became quieter.

“I'm trying to understand what happened to my daughter's inheritance.””

Patricia turned toward Lily.

“Tell them why I needed it.””

Lily looked frightened.

“Mom…”

“Tell them!””

Lily wiped her cheeks.

“Mom said the house was going to be in trouble.””

Robert frowned.

“What?””

Lily continued.

“She said there were bills. She said if we didn't get the money, we might lose the house.””

Robert looked at Patricia.

“Was that true?””

Patricia nodded.

“We had some financial problems.””

“How serious?””

“Serious enough.””

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I knew you'd say no.””

Ethan laughed without humor.

“So you went around everybody and took money that wasn't yours?””

Patricia turned toward him.

“You don't understand what it feels like to be responsible for everybody.””

Ethan looked at her.

“And you don't understand what it feels like to be blamed for everybody's mistakes.””

Lily moved closer to the sofa.

“Mom told me the money would come back.””

Robert looked at her.

“How much did you know?””

“I knew she'd taken some.””

“Did you know Ethan was supposed to protect the trust?””

Lily shook her head.

Patricia interrupted.

“I never told her that.””

Megan folded her arms.

“Why did you need Lily to threaten Ethan?””

Patricia looked at the floor.

“Because he was asking questions.””

“What questions?””

“He wanted to know why Claire kept contacting me.””

Ethan remembered something.

“Wait.””

Everybody turned.

“About a month ago, Claire called me. She asked if I had spoken to Dad about Grandma's trust.””

Robert looked surprised.

“You never told me.””

“Because Mom told me Claire was confused and that I shouldn't get involved.””

Megan turned toward Patricia.

“You told him that?””

Patricia nodded slowly.

Ethan continued.

“Then Lily started asking whether I'd been in her room. She kept bringing up the bracelet. I didn't understand why.””

He looked at his sister.

“Now I do.””

Lily lowered her head.

“I didn't know what else to do.””

“You could have told the truth.””

“I was scared.””

“So was I!””

His voice cracked.

For the first time, he looked away from Lily and toward his father.

“I was scared that nobody would believe me.””

Robert stood and approached him.

“I should have listened.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You should have checked.””

Robert nodded.

“You're right.””

Patricia suddenly stood.

“Can we stop making me the villain here? I made a mistake. I was trying to keep the house together.””

Megan looked at her.

“You didn't just take money. You let Ethan become the target.””

“I didn't make Lily say those things!””

“But you knew what she was planning.””

Patricia froze.

Robert turned toward her.

“What does Megan mean?””

Megan opened her phone.

“I found another recording.””

Patricia's face changed.

“What recording?””

“The conversation between you and Lily the night before the accusation.””

Robert looked at Megan.

“Play it.””

Patricia stepped forward.

“No.””

Megan pressed the screen.

The footage showed Patricia sitting at the dining table.

Lily stood beside her.

The audio was clear.

“Mom, Ethan keeps asking about Claire.””

Patricia looked up.

“Then don't answer him.””

“He won't stop.””

“Tell him you don't know anything.””

“What if he tells Dad?””

Patricia put down her pen.

“Then we'll deal with that.””

Lily hesitated.

“Mom, what if he tells Dad about the money?””

Patricia lowered her voice.

“He won't have proof.””

“But he has Grandma's letter.””

Patricia looked directly at her daughter.

“Then make sure he has a reason to stay quiet.””

Lily frowned.

“What reason?””

Patricia leaned forward.

“Tell him you know he went into your room. Tell him you could make things very difficult if he keeps interfering.””

Lily stared at her.

“And if he doesn't listen?””

Patricia's voice became colder.

“Then nobody will believe him over you.””

The recording ended.

Robert stood completely still.

Ethan looked at his mother.

“You told her to do that?””

Patricia started crying.

“I was angry. I didn't mean for her to actually say those things.””

Megan's voice was steady.

“You told her nobody would believe him.””

Patricia looked at Lily.

“I thought she would just scare him.””

Lily began sobbing.

“You said you would handle everything!””

Patricia reached for her.

But Lily stepped backward.

Robert took the letter and placed it carefully on the table.

Then he said something nobody expected.

“Tomorrow morning, I'm calling the bank and the attorney who prepared this trust.””

Patricia looked up.

“Robert, don't.””

“We're getting the records. Every transaction. Every document.””

“You can't do that to me.””

“I'm not doing anything to you. I'm finding out what happened.””

Ethan looked toward his father.

“And the accusation?””

Robert nodded.

“We'll address that too.””

Patricia shook her head.

“Please. We can settle this privately.””

Megan looked at her.

“Why? So nobody else finds out?””

Patricia didn't respond.

Robert picked up his phone.

But before he could make the call, it rang.

The screen displayed an unfamiliar number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice came through.

“Mr. Hayes? This is Claire.””

Robert straightened.

“Claire?””

“I heard there was a family meeting tonight.””

“How?””

“Because Patricia called me.””

Robert looked at his wife.

Claire continued.

“There's something you need to know. The letter you found isn't the only document your mother left.””

Robert tightened his grip on the phone.

“What other document?””

There was a pause.

Then Claire said:

“The original trust agreement. And it contains a signature that should never have been there.””

Robert looked at Patricia.

May you like

She had stopped crying.

Instead, she was staring at the phone as if she already knew what Claire was about to say.
