Chapter 3: The Recording Nobody Expected
The following afternoon, Megan sat alone in the living room.
Her phone rested on the coffee table.
The camera app was open.
She wasn't expecting anything dramatic.
She only wanted to know whether somebody was taking things from the living room.
At 3:17 p.m., the notification appeared.
<text color="secondary" size="xs" weight="medium">CAMERA ALERT · MOTION DETECTED</text>
Megan picked up her phone.
The footage showed Lily entering the living room.
She was carrying a small white envelope.
She looked toward the stairs.
Then toward the front door.
After checking that nobody was around, she walked to the sofa and placed the envelope underneath a cushion.
Megan frowned.
Why would Lily hide something there?
She watched the recording again.
A minute later, Ethan entered.
He was holding a glass of water.
“Hey,” Lily said.
Ethan looked surprised.
“Hey. What are you doing?””
“Nothing.””
He sat in the armchair.
Lily remained standing.
“Can I ask you something?””
“Sure.””
“Have you told Mom about the bracelet?””
“No. There's nothing to tell.””
Lily crossed her arms.
“She thinks you took it.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Then she can think whatever she wants. I didn't take it.””
“You could at least help me look.””
“I already offered.””
“You didn't really try.””
Ethan put down his glass.
“Lily, I have work. I can't spend every afternoon searching for something you misplaced.””
Her face tightened.
“You think everything is my fault.””
“I didn't say that.””
“You never say anything directly. You just make me feel stupid.””
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
“Can we not do this?””
Lily looked toward the staircase again.
Then she walked closer to him.
“Do you know what Mom said?””
“What?””
“She said if anything else goes missing, she's going to make sure Dad understands what's happening.””
Ethan gave a tired laugh.
“Okay.””
“I'm serious.””
“So am I. I didn't steal your bracelet.””
Lily leaned against the sofa.
“Maybe you should be careful.””
Ethan looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
“Nothing.””
He stood.
“I'm going upstairs.””
Lily moved slightly, allowing him to pass.
The footage ended when he disappeared from the camera's view.
Megan stared at the screen.
She rewound it.
Then played it again.
The envelope beneath the cushion caught her attention.
She went downstairs and checked the sofa.
The envelope was still there.
Inside were two photographs.
One showed a silver bracelet.
The other showed a small jewelry receipt.
Megan sat down.
She looked at the receipt.
The date was the same one she'd seen on the paper behind the bookshelf.
But the name on the receipt was not Lily's.
It belonged to a woman named Claire.
Megan recognized the name immediately.
Claire was their grandmother's longtime neighbor.
She had attended Lily's birthday party two weeks earlier.
Megan placed the papers back inside the envelope.
She wasn't going to confront anyone based on a few photographs.
She wanted the complete story.
That evening, she checked the camera again.
There was another notification.
This time, Patricia entered the living room.
She was holding a small handbag.
She walked directly to the sofa, lifted the cushion, and removed the envelope.
Megan leaned closer to her screen.
Patricia examined the contents.
Then she looked toward the hallway.
She put the envelope into her handbag and walked away.
Megan's stomach tightened.
Why was her mother taking something Lily had hidden?
She waited.
Twenty minutes later, Patricia returned.
The envelope was gone.
She sat on the sofa and called someone.
The camera's microphone picked up only fragments.
“...not yet.””
A pause.
“...I told you to wait.””
Another pause.
Then Patricia lowered her voice.
“...Ethan must not find out.””
Megan stopped breathing for a moment.
She replayed the clip.
The audio wasn't perfect, but the words were clear enough.
Ethan must not find out.
She checked the time.
Then she looked upstairs.
She wanted to confront Patricia immediately.
But she stopped herself.
She needed more than a suspicious recording.
She needed to understand why her mother was hiding something from Ethan.
The next morning, Megan asked Robert to meet her in the garage.
He was checking the tire pressure on his car.
“Dad?””
“What's wrong?””
“Can I ask you something?””
Robert straightened.
“Of course.””
“Do you remember Grandma's bracelet?””
He nodded.
“Lily's silver one?””
“Yes.””
“What about it?””
“Do you know who bought it?””
Robert smiled faintly.
“Your grandmother bought it for Lily before she passed away. Why?””
Megan took out her phone.
“I found something strange.””
She showed him the photograph of the receipt.
Robert studied it.
“Who's Claire?””
“Grandma's neighbor.””
Robert's smile disappeared.
“Why does she have a receipt for that bracelet?””
“I don't know.””
He looked at the photograph again.
“Where did you get this?””
“From the living room.””
Robert handed the phone back.
“Don't jump to conclusions.””
“I'm not.””
“Have you spoken to your mother?””
“Not yet.””
Robert sighed.
“Your mother has been under a lot of stress.””
Megan gave him a sharp look.
“So has everybody else.””
Robert didn't answer.
She continued.
“Dad, things have been disappearing for weeks. And somehow, every time something goes missing, Ethan gets blamed.””
Robert leaned against the car.
“Ethan can be careless.””
“Careless isn't the same as guilty.””
“I know.””
“Then why does nobody ever check?””
Robert looked away.
For a few seconds, the garage was silent except for the faint hum of the refrigerator.
Finally, he spoke.
“What are you asking me to do?””
“Look at the footage.””
Robert frowned.
“What footage?””
Megan took a breath.
“I installed a camera in the living room.””
His face changed immediately.
“You did what?””
“I know how that sounds.””
“Megan, this is my house.””
“I didn't put it in anyone's bedroom. It's facing the living room.””
Robert rubbed his forehead.
“Your mother is going to be furious.””
“Maybe she should be.””
He looked at her.
“What have you recorded?””
Megan hesitated.
“Enough to know that we need to talk.””
Robert studied her face.
“Show me.””
They went inside.
Megan connected her phone to the television.
She showed him the recording of Lily hiding the envelope.
Then Ethan entering.
Then Patricia taking the envelope and making the phone call.
Robert watched without speaking.
When the recording ended, he remained seated.
“Why didn't you tell me sooner?””
“I wanted to understand what I was looking at.””
Robert looked toward the hallway.
“Does Ethan know?””
“No.””
“Does Lily?””
“No.””
He stood.
“Don't show this to anybody yet.””
Megan's expression hardened.
“Dad, that's exactly what we've been doing. Waiting. Hoping everything will somehow fix itself.””
Robert opened his mouth, but she continued.
“Ethan is being accused of something serious. And Mom is already taking sides.””
Robert lowered his eyes.
“I'll speak to your mother.””
“No. We need to check everything first.””
Before he could respond, the front door opened.
Patricia walked in carrying shopping bags.
“What's going on?””
Robert quickly turned off the television.
“Nothing.””
Patricia looked at Megan.
“Why are you both standing here like that?””
Megan picked up her phone.
“Dad and I were talking.””
“About what?””
Robert hesitated.
“Family matters.””
Patricia placed the shopping bags on the table.
“Which family matters?””
Nobody answered.
She looked toward the television.
“Were you watching something?””
Megan slipped her phone into her pocket.
“Just checking something.””
Patricia narrowed her eyes.
“Checking what?””
Robert stepped forward.
“Patricia, we need to talk.””
“About?””
“Lily's bracelet.””
Patricia's expression changed.
For a fraction of a second, her eyes moved toward her handbag.
Then she smiled.
“Oh, that again?””
“Yes,” Robert said.
“We need to find out where it went.””
Patricia removed her coat.
“I already told you. Ethan probably borrowed it.””
Megan shook her head.
“Why do you keep saying that?””
“Because he has a habit of taking things.””
“Have you seen him take the bracelet?””
Patricia turned toward her.
“Don't question me like that.””
“Then answer the question.””
Robert raised his hand.
“Enough. We'll discuss this tonight.””
Patricia picked up her handbag.
“Fine. But Lily is not going to sit through another interrogation.””
She started toward the stairs.
Then stopped.
“Where's Ethan?””
“Work,” Robert answered.
Patricia nodded.
“Good.””
Megan noticed how quickly she said it.
That evening, the entire family gathered in the living room.
Ethan sat on the far end of the sofa.
Lily sat beside Patricia.
Robert stood near the fireplace.
Megan remained by the television, holding her phone.
The atmosphere was uncomfortable.
Robert cleared his throat.
“We need to settle the issue about the bracelet.””
Ethan folded his arms.
“I've already told you I didn't take it.””
Patricia immediately responded.
“Nobody said you did.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You've been saying it for days.””
“I'm asking questions.””
“No, Mom. You're making accusations.””
Lily wiped her eyes.
“Can we please stop?””
Ethan looked at her.
“Then tell everyone what happened.””
“I already told everyone!””
“Tell them again.””
Patricia stood.
“Don't pressure her.””
Robert raised his voice.
“Sit down, Patricia.””
She looked at him in disbelief.
“What?””
“I said sit down.””
For once, she obeyed.
Robert turned toward Megan.
“You said you had something to show us.””
Megan nodded.
She picked up the remote.
Patricia immediately frowned.
“What are you doing?””
“Showing everyone the recording.””
“What recording?””
Megan looked at her.
“The living room camera.””
Patricia's face went pale.
“You put a camera in here?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me?””
“Yes.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Megan, play it.””
Patricia grabbed his arm.
“Robert, absolutely not!””
He gently removed her hand.
“Why not?””
“Because this is private!””
Ethan stared at his mother.
“What are you afraid we'll see?””
Lily suddenly stood.
“I don't want to watch this!””
Megan didn't stop her.
She simply connected her phone to the television.
The screen went black.
Then the first recording appeared.
Lily entered the living room.
Ethan followed.
They stood facing each other.
The date appeared in the corner.
Three days before the accusation.
Robert leaned forward.
“Turn up the volume.””
Megan increased it.
The speakers crackled.
On the screen, Lily glanced toward the stairs.
Then she looked directly at Ethan.
The room became completely silent.
Patricia reached for Lily's hand.
Lily pulled it away.
Megan paused the video.
“Before anyone says anything, I want everybody to watch the entire recording.””
Ethan looked at his father.
“Dad, that's all I've been asking.””
Robert nodded slowly.
“Play it.””
Megan pressed the button.
The footage moved again.
Lily took one step toward Ethan.
Her lips began moving.
Patricia stared at the screen.
Her expression had changed.
Megan glanced at her mother, then at her younger sister.
Nobody spoke.

The recording was about to reveal something that could change the entire family.
And the most important part hadn't even played yet.
