Chapter 5: The Woman at the Door

Megan didn't immediately play the recording.

She stared at the thumbnail, trying to recognize the person standing beside Patricia.

The image was grainy.

But the woman's hair, posture, and familiar handbag made her stomach tighten.

“Dad,” Megan said quietly.

Robert turned.

“What?””

“Do you recognize this person?””

She showed him the screen.

Robert leaned closer.

His expression changed.

“That's Claire.””

Patricia immediately turned around.

“Don't play that.””

Robert looked at her.

“You know who it is?””

Patricia said nothing.

Ethan stood up.

“Who is Claire?””

Robert answered without taking his eyes off the phone.

“Your grandmother's neighbor.””

“The woman whose name was on the jewelry receipt?”” Megan asked.

Robert nodded slowly.

Ethan looked between them.

“Why was she here?””

Patricia put her handbag on the table.

“She came to return something.””

“What?”” Megan asked.

“Something your grandmother left behind.””

Megan looked at the photograph on her phone.

“The bracelet?””

Patricia's silence answered before her words did.

Lily pulled away from her mother's arms.

“Mom, don't.””

Robert turned toward her.

“What do you know about this?””

Lily shook her head.

“Nothing.””

Megan pressed play.

The recording showed Patricia entering the living room.

She looked toward the hallway before opening the front door.

Claire stepped inside.

She carried a small paper bag.

Patricia closed the door behind her.

The two women sat on the sofa.

Claire removed something from the bag.

The camera captured the silver bracelet.

Patricia picked it up.

She examined the clasp, then placed it inside a small envelope.

The audio was faint, but several words were audible.

Claire spoke first.

“You need to tell her.””

Patricia shook her head.

“Not yet.””

“She's getting older. She deserves to know.””

“I said not yet.””

Claire leaned forward.

“And what about Ethan?””

Patricia looked toward the hallway.

“He must not find out.””

Robert paused the recording.

He stared at his wife.

“Why was Claire asking you to tell Lily something?””

Patricia rubbed her forehead.

“It's complicated.””

“Then explain it.””

“Not in front of everybody.””

Ethan gave a bitter smile.

“Of course. There's always a reason we can't hear the truth.””

Patricia turned toward him.

“Ethan, please.””

“No. I'm listening.””

Robert sat down.

“Patricia, what does Claire have to do with Lily's bracelet?””

Patricia looked at the television.

Then she looked at Lily.

Finally, she spoke.

“Your grandmother gave Claire something before she died.””

“What?”” Megan asked.

“A letter.””

Robert frowned.

“What letter?””

“A personal letter.””

“Why would Claire have a letter from my mother?””

Patricia's voice became defensive.

“Because your mother trusted her.””

Robert shook his head.

“You're telling me a neighbor has been holding a letter from my mother for months, and you knew about it?””

Patricia nodded.

“Claire brought it to me.””

“Why?””

“She thought Lily should read it.””

Megan glanced toward Lily.

“Why Lily?””

Patricia didn't answer.

Ethan stepped closer.

“And what does that have to do with me?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“Nothing.””

“Then why did Claire ask whether I knew?””

“Because she was concerned about the family.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You're still not answering.””

Lily suddenly stood.

“I want to go upstairs.””

Robert raised a hand.

“Wait.””

“I don't want to talk anymore!””

“Lily, sit down.””

“No!””

Patricia reached for her daughter's hand.

“Let her go.””

Megan watched them.

Something was wrong.

The letter might explain the bracelet, but it didn't explain why Lily had threatened Ethan.

Nor why Patricia had taken the envelope.

She looked at the recording again.

“Dad, there's another part.””

Robert turned toward her.

“What?””

“The camera recorded Claire leaving.””

Megan resumed the video.

Claire stood near the front door.

She spoke quietly to Patricia.

The audio crackled.

“...you can't keep hiding it.””

Patricia answered.

“Watch your voice.””

Claire shook her head.

“She's not a child anymore.””

Patricia moved closer.

“And neither is Ethan. Do you want him to find out this way?””

Claire looked toward the hallway.

Then she replied.

“He deserves to know the truth too.””

Patricia opened the door.

Claire left.

The footage ended.

Robert remained silent.

Megan turned off the television.

“Dad, what truth?””

Robert looked at Patricia.

“That's what I'd like to know.””

Patricia sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked less angry than frightened.

“Your grandmother was very ill near the end,” she began.

“She wasn't thinking clearly about certain things.””

Robert frowned.

“Don't do that.””

“Do what?””

“Don't use her illness to dismiss everything she said.””

Patricia looked away.

“She was confused.””

“Then why did Claire keep that letter?””

“Because she believed your mother had made a promise.””

Robert leaned forward.

“What promise?””

Patricia shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Megan stared at her.

“You just said Claire gave you the letter.””

“I didn't read all of it.””

“Why?””

“Because it wasn't addressed to me!””

Robert stood.

“Then where is it?””

Patricia looked toward her handbag.

Megan followed her eyes.

“It's in there, isn't it?””

Patricia immediately picked up the bag.

“I'm not giving you anything.””

Robert held out his hand.

“Patricia.””

“No.””

“Give me the letter.””

She stepped backward.

“Robert, you don't understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

Lily appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

“Mom?””

Patricia turned.

Lily looked frightened.

“Don't give it to them.””

Robert slowly faced his daughter.

“Why?””

Lily shook her head.

“Because Grandma didn't want everybody to know.””

Megan's eyes narrowed.

“How do you know what Grandma wanted?””

Lily looked down.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan asked the question everyone had been avoiding.

“Lily, did you know Claire had the bracelet?””

She nodded.

Ethan stared at her.

“Then why did you accuse me?””

Lily wiped her cheeks.

“I didn't know what else to do.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward her mother.

Patricia immediately intervened.

“That's enough for tonight.””

Robert shook his head.

“No. We are not ending this conversation.””

He held out his hand again.

“Give me the letter.””

Patricia slowly opened her handbag.

She removed a cream-colored envelope.

It had an old-fashioned handwritten address.

Robert recognized the handwriting immediately.

His mother's.

He took the envelope carefully.

The front contained only one name.

Lily.

Robert turned it over.

There was a date written underneath the seal.

It was dated two days before his mother died.

Megan stepped closer.

“Dad, open it.””

Robert looked at Patricia.

“Why didn't you give this to her?””

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was trying to protect her.””

“From what?””

Patricia looked toward Ethan.

Then she whispered:

“From finding out that the person she trusted most in this family had been hiding something from her.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Patricia didn't answer.

Robert broke the seal.

He unfolded the letter.

His eyes moved across the first paragraph.

Then he stopped.

His face went pale.

“Patricia,” he whispered.

She covered her mouth.

May you like

Robert read the next line.

And suddenly, the missing bracelet wasn't the biggest secret in the house anymore.
