Chapter 4: The Words That Changed Everything

The recording continued.

On the television, Lily stood beside the sofa, watching Ethan carefully.

Ethan was holding a glass of water.

“What do you want?”” he asked.

Lily glanced toward the staircase again.

“I need you to do something for me.””

Ethan frowned.

“What?””

“Tell Mom you haven't seen my bracelet.””

“I already told her that.””

“No. I mean tell her you haven't been near my room.””

Ethan looked confused.

“I haven't been near your room.””

Lily folded her arms.

“Even if she asks?””

“Why wouldn't I say that?””

“Because you were upstairs yesterday.””

“I went to my room.””

“You walked past mine.””

Ethan sighed.

“Lily, what is wrong with you?””

In the living room, the real Ethan leaned forward.

“That's exactly what happened,” he whispered.

Patricia didn't look at him.

Her eyes remained fixed on the television.

The recording continued.

Lily moved closer to Ethan.

“Listen. If Mom asks, just say you never went upstairs.””

Ethan shook his head.

“But I did go upstairs.””

“Not into my room.””

“Then what's the problem?””

Lily lowered her voice.

“The problem is that Mom already thinks you took my bracelet.””

Ethan placed his glass on the table.

“Then tell her the truth.””

Lily stared at him.

“What if I don't?””

Ethan looked at her.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“What if I tell her you came into my room?””

The television speakers carried her voice throughout the living room.

Ethan on the recording froze.

“Why would you say that?””

Lily shrugged.

“Because nobody believes me when I say things are missing.””

“That doesn't make any sense.””

“Mom believes me.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Lily, stop.””

Then came the sentence that made Robert slowly stand up.

“If you don't tell Mom what I want, I'll say you came into my room and grabbed me.””

Nobody moved.

On the television, Ethan stared at his sister.

“What did you just say?””

Lily didn't answer immediately.

She glanced toward the staircase again.

Then she repeated herself.

“You heard me.””

The recording ended.

The screen went black.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the television's low electrical hum.

Robert stood motionless.

Ethan's mouth was slightly open.

Megan lowered the remote.

Patricia looked as though she had forgotten how to breathe.

Then Lily spoke.

“That isn't what happened.””

Her voice was small.

Megan turned toward her.

“It's your voice.””

“You edited it!””

Megan shook her head.

“I haven't edited anything.””

“You cut out what happened before!””

“Lily, the recording started when you entered the room.””

“That's not true!””

Ethan stood up.

“Why would you say that?””

Lily immediately turned toward her mother.

“Mom!””

Patricia rose and moved beside her.

“Everybody calm down.””

Robert looked at his wife.

“Calm down?””

“Robert, we don't know what we're looking at.””

“We just watched her threaten her brother.””

“She could have been joking!””

Ethan stared at her.

“Joking?””

Patricia turned toward him.

“Don't twist my words.””

“You heard her say she'd accuse me of something I didn't do!””

“She was upset.””

“So was I!””

Robert stepped between them.

“Ethan, sit down.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No, Dad. I'm tired of sitting down while everybody decides what I did.””

He pointed toward the television.

“That's why I asked you to check the cameras. I knew something wasn't right.””

Robert's expression softened.

“I know.””

“No, you don't. You didn't believe me.””

Robert lowered his eyes.

“I should have listened.””

Lily began crying again.

“You're all acting like I'm some horrible person!””

Megan took a step toward her.

“Nobody said that.””

“You're making me look like a liar!””

Megan looked directly at her.

“Then help us understand the recording.””

Lily shook her head.

“I don't have to explain myself to you.””

“Why not?””

“Because you're not my mother!””

Patricia immediately stepped forward.

“That's enough, Megan.””

Megan turned toward her.

“Mom, you heard the recording.””

“I heard a conversation. I don't know what happened before or after.””

“Then let's watch everything.””

Patricia's face tightened.

“There's nothing else to watch.””

Megan looked down at her phone.

“There is.””

She opened the camera application.

Robert frowned.

“You recorded more?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

“Several days.””

Patricia's expression changed.

“You've been watching us?””

Megan took a breath.

“I installed the camera because things kept disappearing. I didn't know it would uncover this.””

Patricia shook her head.

“This is sick.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What's sick is accusing your own son of something like that without checking.””

Patricia turned sharply.

“Don't you dare speak to me like that.””

“Then stop treating me like a criminal!””

Robert raised his hand.

“Both of you, enough.””

He turned toward Megan.

“Show us the footage from the day Lily's bracelet disappeared.””

Megan nodded.

She scrolled through the recordings.

One clip showed Lily entering the living room alone.

Another showed Patricia taking an envelope from beneath the sofa cushion.

Then came the recording of Patricia making a phone call.

Robert leaned closer.

“Play the audio again.””

Megan pressed the screen.

Patricia's voice came through.

“...not yet.””

A pause.

“...I told you to wait.””

Then:

“...Ethan must not find out.””

Robert slowly turned toward his wife.

“What did you mean by that?””

Patricia looked at the television.

“I don't remember saying that.””

Megan raised her eyebrows.

“You don't remember?””

“It was probably about something else.””

“What else?””

“I have a hundred conversations every day!””

Ethan let out a quiet laugh.

“You remember everything when you're accusing me, but suddenly you don't remember this?””

Patricia's cheeks flushed.

Robert approached her.

“Who were you talking to?””

“Nobody important.””

“Patricia.””

She picked up her handbag.

“I don't have to answer questions like I'm on trial.””

Robert blocked her path.

“I'm asking you a simple question.””

“Move.””

“Who were you talking to?””

She looked at him for several seconds.

Then her eyes moved toward Lily.

And Megan noticed something.

Patricia wasn't looking at her husband for help.

She was waiting for her daughter to say something.

Lily wiped her face.

“Mom, tell them.””

Patricia's jaw tightened.

“Lily, don't.””

The room went silent again.

Robert slowly turned toward his younger daughter.

“Tell us what?””

Lily looked at the floor.

Megan stepped closer.

“Lily, what was in that envelope?””

“Nothing.””

“What did Mom take from underneath the sofa?””

“I don't know.””

“You put it there.””

Lily looked up.

“How do you know that?””

Megan didn't answer immediately.

Then she pointed toward the television.

“Because the camera recorded you.””

Lily's expression changed.

Patricia grabbed her handbag more tightly.

Robert looked at his wife.

“Patricia, I want the truth.””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Lily suddenly shouted.

“Fine! I made up the threat!””

Ethan closed his eyes.

Lily continued, crying harder.

“But I didn't make up everything!””

Robert stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked directly at Ethan.

“He was asking me about the bracelet. He kept pressuring me!””

Ethan shook his head.

“I asked you where it was.””

“You wouldn't leave me alone!””

“Because you accused me!””

Lily looked toward her mother.

“Mom, please!””

Patricia pulled her daughter into her arms.

Robert remained standing.

He looked exhausted.

“Lily, where is the bracelet?””

Lily buried her face against her mother's shoulder.

“I don't know.””

Megan glanced at her phone.

Then another notification appeared.

<text color="secondary" size="xs" weight="medium">CAMERA ARCHIVE · OLDER RECORDING AVAILABLE</text>

She tapped it.

A thumbnail appeared.

The date was six days earlier.

Megan stared at the screen.

It showed Patricia entering the living room carrying something small in her hand.

She enlarged the image.

It was a silver bracelet.

And Patricia wasn't alone.

May you like

Someone was waiting for her near the front door.

Someone the family hadn't mentioned once.
