Chapter 1: The Accusation
“He came into my room and grabbed me!””
Lily stood in the middle of the living room, crying so hard that her shoulders shook. Her black hoodie hung loosely over her hands, and her mascara had begun running down her cheeks.
She pointed directly at Ethan.
Ethan stood near the staircase, frozen.
“What?”” he whispered.
Their mother, Patricia, rushed across the room and wrapped an arm around Lily's shoulders.
“Sweetheart, come here. You're safe.””
Lily buried her face against her mother's chest.
“He came into my room and grabbed me, Mom!””
Ethan immediately raised both hands.
“I never touched her!””
His father, Robert, stepped between them, raising one hand toward each side.
“Nobody moves. Tell the truth.””
The television continued playing silently in the background. Nobody seemed to notice.
Patricia tightened her embrace around Lily before turning toward Ethan.
“Why would she lie?””
Ethan stared at his mother.
“Because you haven't even asked what happened!””
“She's terrified,” Patricia snapped.
“Look at her!””
“I am looking at her! And I'm telling you, I never touched her.””
Lily lifted her head.
“He's lying!””
Ethan looked at her, then at their mother.
For years, he had believed that if he explained himself carefully enough, his family would eventually understand.
But something in his mother's expression told him that explanation would not be enough this time.
He turned toward Robert.
“Dad, check the cameras!””
Patricia immediately shook her head.
“No cameras upstairs.””
Ethan looked at her.
“I didn't say upstairs. I said check the cameras.””
“There are no cameras in the bedrooms or upstairs hallway,” Patricia replied.
“You know that.””
Robert lowered his hand.
“Patricia, let him finish.””
“What is there to finish?”” she demanded.
“Our daughter is crying, and our son is standing there making excuses.””
Ethan swallowed.
“Dad, please. Just check the footage.””
Lily suddenly grabbed her mother's sleeve.
“Mom, I don't want to stay here if he's going to keep denying it.””
Patricia stroked her daughter's hair.
“You don't have to worry about anything. I'm here.””
Ethan let out a bitter laugh.
“Of course. You're always there for her.””
“Don't start,” Patricia warned.
“I'm not starting anything. I'm asking you to look at the evidence.””
“What evidence?”” Lily cried.
Ethan turned toward her.
“The truth.””
Lily stepped closer to their mother.
“See? He's threatening me again!””
Robert raised his voice.
“Enough!””
The room fell silent.
He looked at Ethan.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Ethan took a breath.
“I was downstairs. Lily came looking for me. She asked me about something missing from her room.
We talked. Then she started accusing me of taking it.””
“What was missing?”” Robert asked.
Lily wiped her cheeks.
“My bracelet.””
“What bracelet?”” Ethan asked.
“The silver one Grandma gave me!””
Ethan frowned.
“You told me you lost that bracelet last week.””
“I didn't lose it!””
“You said you couldn't find it.””
Patricia turned sharply toward him.
“Why were you discussing her belongings in the first place?””
“Because she came to me!””
Lily shook her head violently.
“Stop saying that!””
Robert rubbed his forehead.
“Everybody needs to calm down.””
But Patricia was already reaching for her phone.
“I'm calling your aunt. Lily shouldn't have to deal with this alone.””
Ethan stared at her.
“You're calling people before checking anything?””
“I'm calling someone who will support her.””
“Dad, listen to yourself. This is exactly why nobody ever finds out what really happens in this house.””
Robert's expression hardened.
“Watch your mouth.””
Ethan looked down.
He was twenty-two years old, but standing in that living room made him feel twelve again.
Lily had always been the youngest. The one whose birthday parties were bigger, whose mistakes were forgiven faster, whose tears could stop an argument before anyone finished a sentence.
Ethan had never considered that a problem.
Until now.
A soft voice came from the hallway.
“Maybe we should check the recording before calling anybody.””
Everyone turned.
Megan stood near the doorway in cream-colored pajamas.
She was Robert's older daughter from his first marriage, Ethan's half-sister, and Lily's older sister.
She held a phone in one hand.
Patricia's face tightened.
“Megan, this isn't your business.””
Megan looked at Lily.
“Actually, it might be.””
“Don't interfere,” Patricia said.
Megan ignored her and approached the television.
Ethan looked at her.
“You have something?””
Megan didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked toward Robert.
“Dad, do you remember when I told you things kept disappearing from the living room?””
Robert frowned.
“Yes.””
“And do you remember what you told me?””
“I told you we'd look into it.””
“You never did.””
Patricia folded her arms.
“Megan, whatever this is, now is not the time.””
Megan finally looked at her.
“Actually, Mom, I think now is exactly the time.””
She connected her phone to the television.
The screen went black for a moment.
Then a grainy black-and-white image appeared.
It showed the living room from an angle nobody in the family recognized.
The footage was dated three days earlier.
Ethan appeared on the screen, standing near the sofa.
Lily entered the room a few seconds later.
The two stood facing each other.
Patricia leaned forward.
“What is that?””
Megan kept her eyes on the television.
“A recording.””
“From where?”” Robert asked.
Megan looked directly at him, then pointed toward the screen.
“I hid a camera. Things kept disappearing.””
Robert stared at her.
“You put a camera in my house?””
“In the living room. Not in anybody's bedroom.””
Patricia's voice rose.
“You had absolutely no right!””
Megan pressed her lips together.
“Maybe we can discuss that after we find out why Lily is accusing Ethan.””
She increased the volume.
The television speakers crackled.
On the screen, Lily moved closer to Ethan.
Megan turned toward the family.
“Watch. She tells him what she'll accuse him of.””
Lily's crying stopped.
Her mother slowly released her shoulders.
Both of them looked toward the television.
For the first time since the accusation began, Lily looked uncertain.
Patricia's fingers tightened around her phone.
Megan held her own phone in front of her and looked directly toward its camera lens.
“What did she say? Watch part two below.””

The recording continued.
But the family hadn't heard the most important sentence yet.
