Chapter 6: Grandma's Last Letter

Robert sat down before continuing.

The envelope trembled slightly in his hands.

Nobody spoke.

Even Lily had stopped crying.

“Dad?”” Megan asked.

Robert looked at the letter again.

Then he read the first lines aloud.

“My dearest Lily, if you are reading this, I hope you have grown into the brave young woman I always believed you would become.””

Lily lowered her eyes.

Robert continued.

“I have left something with Claire. It belongs to you, and I hope you will keep it safe. But there is something more important I need you to understand.””

He stopped.

Patricia looked at him.

“Robert, please.””

He ignored her.

“Your grandmother wrote this for Lily,” Megan said quietly.

“Let him finish.””

Robert continued.

“She wanted you to know that family secrets should never become weapons. If someone tells you to hide the truth to protect the family, remember that the truth is not what destroys a family. The lies do.””

Lily began crying again.

Patricia sat down.

Robert looked at the next paragraph.

His expression changed.

“There's something about your mother,” he said.

Megan leaned forward.

“What?””

Robert read silently for several seconds.

Then he looked at Patricia.

“Did you know?””

Patricia shook her head.

“Robert, I don't know what you're talking about.””

He lowered the letter.

“Your mother says Claire was supposed to give Lily the bracelet because it contains a small engraved message.””

Megan frowned.

“An engraved message?””

Robert nodded.

He turned the paper around.

The message was written beneath the paragraph.

The bracelet is not the gift. The truth attached to it is.

Ethan looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Robert continued reading.

“Lily, the bracelet was purchased with money I saved specifically for you. But Claire has something else that belongs to you. Something I promised to keep until you were old enough to understand.””

Patricia stood abruptly.

“That's enough.””

Robert looked up.

“No.””

“Robert, please!””

“Why are you so afraid of this letter?””

Patricia's voice broke.

“Because your mother made promises she had no right to make!””

Robert stared at her.

“What promises?””

Patricia walked toward the window.

“Your mother always thought she knew what was best for everybody.””

“She was dying, Patricia.””

“She was still interfering!””

Megan stood.

“Interfering with what?””

Patricia turned.

“With my family!””

The words hung in the room.

Robert slowly folded the letter.

“Your family?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“I didn't mean it like that.””

But Ethan had heard her.

He looked at his father.

“Dad, what's happening?””

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“I don't know yet.””

Megan picked up her phone.

“There's still the recording from the day Claire came here.””

Patricia shook her head.

“Delete it.””

“No.””

“It's private!””

“Then why are you asking me to delete it?””

Patricia stepped closer.

“Because you've already done enough damage.””

Megan didn't move.

“Mom, I haven't accused anyone of anything. I haven't lied about anybody. I've just recorded what happened in a room where everyone was supposed to be safe.””

Patricia's eyes narrowed.

“You think you're helping?””

“I think Ethan deserves to know why his sister accused him.””

Robert turned toward Lily.

“Is there anything else you want to tell us?””

Lily shook her head.

“I'm sorry.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Sorry for what?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“For what I said.””

“Why did you say it?””

Lily didn't answer.

“Lily.””

She glanced toward Patricia.

Then back at Ethan.

“Because I thought you'd tell Mom.””

“Tell her what?””

Lily swallowed.

“That I took something.””

Ethan stared at her.

“What did you take?””

Lily looked at the floor.

Patricia stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

Robert raised his voice.

“No more interruptions.””

Lily flinched.

He immediately softened his tone.

“Sweetheart, we're listening.””

She took a shaky breath.

“I took the bracelet.””

Ethan's expression hardened.

“Where is it?””

“I don't know.””

“You just said you took it.””

“I gave it to Mom.””

Everyone turned toward Patricia.

Patricia shook her head.

“She was confused.””

Lily started crying again.

“No, Mom! I gave it to you!””

Robert looked at his wife.

“Did you take the bracelet?””

Patricia didn't answer.

Megan reopened the camera application.

“I have another recording.””

Patricia's head snapped around.

“What?””

“The day Lily gave you something.””

Megan scrolled through the archive.

She found a clip from the afternoon before Claire's visit.

The footage showed Lily entering the living room.

Patricia was sitting on the sofa, reading.

Lily approached with a small jewelry box.

Patricia closed her book.

“What is that?””

Lily opened the box.

The silver bracelet was inside.

Patricia looked at it.

“Where did you get this?””

“From my drawer.””

“Why are you giving it to me?””

“Because I don't want it anymore.””

Patricia took the box.

“You shouldn't throw away things Grandma gave you.””

“I'm not throwing it away.””

“Then what are you doing?””

Lily lowered her voice.

“I'm giving it to you.””

Patricia looked toward the hallway.

“Does Ethan know?””

“No.””

“Good.””

She closed the box.

The recording ended.

Robert stared at his wife.

“Why did you tell Claire Ethan mustn't find out?””

Patricia pressed her lips together.

Lily looked toward the television.

Then she whispered:

“Because Ethan wasn't the one who took the money.””

Ethan turned.

“What money?””

Lily's face crumpled.

Megan stepped closer.

“What money, Lily?””

Lily looked at Patricia.

Her mother shook her head almost imperceptibly.

But Lily continued.

“The money Grandma left for me.””

Robert stood.

“What money?””

Lily wiped her cheeks.

“Grandma said she had saved money for my future. She told me Claire knew where it was.””

Megan looked at the letter.

“That's what Grandma meant.””

Robert nodded slowly.

“Your grandmother had an account for Lily.””

Patricia looked away.

Ethan stared at his mother.

“Did you take it?””

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

“I used some of it.””

Robert's face went rigid.

“How much?””

“I was going to replace it.””

“How much, Patricia?””

She covered her mouth.

“I needed it.””

“For what?””

“Household expenses.””

Robert shook his head.

“You used Lily's inheritance for household expenses?””

“I was going to put it back!””

Megan's voice was quiet.

“How much is missing?””

Patricia looked at her.

“I don't know exactly.””

Robert stared at her.

“You don't know?””

“I had bills. Things were difficult. You weren't paying attention to what was happening financially.””

Robert took a step backward.

“Don't blame me for this.””

“I am not blaming you!””

“You just said—”

“I was trying to keep this family together!””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“So you let everybody blame me instead?””

Patricia looked at him.

“I never wanted that.””

“But you let it happen.””

Lily stepped forward.

“Mom said we could fix everything if nobody found out.””

Megan looked at her.

“That's why you threatened Ethan?””

Lily nodded.

“I thought if he admitted he'd been near my room, everyone would stop asking questions.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You were willing to accuse me of something terrible over money?””

Lily began sobbing.

“I didn't think Mom would let it go that far.””

Patricia reached for her.

“Lily, stop talking.””

Robert raised his hand.

“No. Let her speak.””

Lily pulled away.

“I was scared. Mom told me the money would be replaced. She said Claire was making everything complicated.””

Robert looked at the letter again.

“Claire was trying to give Lily what her grandmother left her.””

Patricia sank into the chair.

“I know.””

The room became silent.

Megan looked at her mother.

“Then why did you keep the letter?””

Patricia stared at the floor.

“Because there was another page.””

Robert froze.

“Another page?””

Patricia nodded.

“Claire gave me two pages. I only showed you the first.””

Megan's expression changed.

“Where is the second page?””

Patricia slowly looked toward the cabinet beside the television.

“Inside the drawer.””

Robert walked over and opened it.

He found several old photographs, a bundle of receipts, and a folded piece of paper.

He removed it.

The handwriting matched the first letter.

But this time, the message began with a name.

Ethan.

Robert looked up.

“Why is Ethan's name on this?””

Patricia began crying.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Read it, Dad.””

Robert unfolded the page.

He read the first sentence.

Then his hands began to shake.

“Your grandmother wrote something about the person who was supposed to receive the money if Lily ever refused it.””

Megan frowned.

“Who?””

Robert looked directly at Ethan.

“Your grandmother named you as the person she trusted to protect Lily's inheritance.””

Ethan stared at him.

“Me?””

Robert nodded.

Then he looked at the bottom of the page.

There was one final handwritten sentence.

May you like

And it explained why Patricia had been so desperate to keep the recording hidden.

*But before Robert could read it aloud, Patricia whispered, “If you read that last line, this family will never be the same.””*
