Chapter 8: The Plan Hidden In Plain Sight

I didn't open the folder immediately.

For some reason, my hands refused to move.

Because sometimes you know the truth will hurt before you even see it.

Claire stood on my porch, trembling.

Emily stood behind me, watching.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, Pastor Caleb was not in control of the room.

"Where did you get this?"" I asked.

Claire looked down.

"From the church office.""

"Did you steal it?""

Her face tightened.

"No.""

She shook her head.

"I worked there for three years.""

She looked embarrassed.

"I was the assistant who organized his files.""

My heart sank.

"Then you saw this before?""

She nodded.

"I saw pieces.""

"Why didn't you say anything?""

Her eyes filled with guilt.

"Because I didn't understand.""

She looked at Emily.

"I was young too.""

Emily looked away.

Claire continued.

"He made everyone believe he was helping people.""

I opened the folder.

The first page contained names.

Not just Emily's.

Several young adults.

Different families.

Different situations.

But there was a pattern.

Every person had something valuable.

A house.

A business.

An inheritance.

A connection.

I looked at Claire.

"What is this?""

She swallowed.

"A map.""

"A map?""

"Of people he thought he could influence.""

The words made me sick.

I flipped another page.

Then another.

And there it was.

My name.

Margaret Hayes.

Underneath it were notes.

My husband's death.

My financial situation.

The house.

Emily.

My relationship with my daughter.

Someone had written my life down like I was a problem to solve.

I couldn't breathe.

"He was studying me.""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

She looked at Emily.

"Because Emily was the closest person to your future.""

My daughter went pale.

"What does that mean?""

Claire looked uncomfortable.

"Your grandfather didn't just leave your mother a house.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"He created a trust.""

I froze.

A trust.

My father had mentioned something before he died.

A family arrangement.

But I never knew details.

"Emily was the next person connected to it.""

My hands started shaking.

"He wanted access to my daughter because of money?""

Claire didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Emily sat down.

"I feel sick.""

I immediately went to her.

"Emily.""

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"I defended him.""

I held her hand.

"You were manipulated.""

"I should have seen it.""

"No.""

I squeezed her hand.

"You were sixteen.""

She cried quietly.

"I thought he loved me.""

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because I knew she wasn't only mourning the relationship.

She was mourning the person she thought he was.

Claire sat across from us.

"There is something else.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"After you found out about the marriage, he moved quickly.""

"What do you mean?""

"He wanted Emily to sign documents.""

My body went cold.

"What documents?""

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Emily suddenly looked frightened.

"Mom.""

I turned.

"What?""

"He asked me yesterday.""

"About what?""

She swallowed.

"He said since we were married, we needed to update everything.""

My heart stopped.

"Did you sign anything?""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"I told him I wanted to wait.""

For the first time, I felt relief.

Small.

But real.

Then Claire's phone started ringing.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

"What is it?""

She didn't answer.

She just turned the phone toward us.

The caller name appeared.

Pastor Caleb.

Nobody spoke.

The phone continued ringing.

Emily whispered:

"He knows.""

Claire declined the call.

Immediately, another notification appeared.

A message.

She read it.

Then her face went pale.

"What did he say?"" I asked.

She slowly looked up.

"He said...""

Her voice shook.

"He knows you're with Margaret.""

The room went silent.

Then Claire showed us the final line.

A single sentence.

And it made my blood run cold.

"He says Emily has already chosen her side.""

I looked at my daughter.

At the fear in her eyes.

Then at the front door.

Because suddenly I realized something.

May you like

Pastor Caleb wasn't trying to convince Emily anymore.

He was coming to take back control.
