Chapter 4: The People Who Stayed Silent

I didn't drive home.

I didn't sit down.

I didn't even take off my coat.

I stood in the middle of my living room holding the phone, waiting for Rachel to explain the words she had just spoken.

"He wasn't alone.""

The sentence repeated in my mind.

"What does that mean?"" I asked.

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Rachel was crying.

"I should have told you sooner.""

"Rachel, stop.""

I walked toward the window.

"Tell me exactly what you know.""

For several seconds, all I heard was her breathing.

Then she said, "Two years ago, I noticed Emily was changing.""

I closed my eyes.

"I noticed too.""

"No, Margaret. Not like this.""

Her voice became heavier.

"She stopped talking to her friends. She stopped coming over. She started repeating things Caleb said.""

My stomach tightened.

"What things?""

Rachel hesitated.

"Things about how nobody understood her. How people close to her could still hurt her. How some people only loved her because they wanted control.""

I felt a chill.

Those were not just words.

Those were ideas.

Ideas that separated people.

"He was making her distrust us.""

Rachel whispered, "Yes.""

I sat down slowly.

My hands were trembling.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

The silence that followed hurt.

Finally, Rachel answered.

"Because I was afraid.""

I looked toward the closed front door.

"Afraid of what?""

"Of being wrong.""

Her answer surprised me.

"Wrong?""

"Margaret, he was a pastor. Everyone trusted him.""

She swallowed.

"I thought maybe I was misunderstanding.""

I looked at the letter sitting on the table.

A letter that made everything sound so innocent.

A letter that made my daughter look like she had simply found love.

But now I wondered how much of it was her own voice.

"Did Emily know you suspected him?""

"No.""

"Does Caleb know you suspected him?""

Another pause.

"Yes.""

My heart dropped.

"When?""

"Last year.""

I stood up.

"What happened?""

Rachel's voice shook.

"He came to my house.""

The image appeared in my mind.

Pastor Caleb standing at Rachel's door.

Calm.

Polite.

The same way he always appeared.

"What did he say?""

"He told me I was causing confusion in Emily's life.""

I gripped the phone.

"And?""

"He said Emily needed people who supported her choices.""

My jaw tightened.

"Her choices.""

Rachel cried softly.

"I should have fought harder.""

"No.""

I shook my head even though she couldn't see me.

"You should have told me.""

"I know.""

Her voice broke.

"I know.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I heard something in the background.

A door closing.

"Rachel?""

She became quiet.

"Are you alone?""

Another pause.

Then she whispered.

"No.""

My entire body went tense.

"Who is there?""

She didn't answer.

"Rachel, who is there?""

Then I heard another voice.

A man's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Who are you talking to?""

My blood turned cold.

Rachel gasped.

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

My first instinct was to call back.

But something stopped me.

Fear.

Not for myself.

For Rachel.

For Emily.

For everyone who had been close enough to see something wrong but too afraid to speak.

I grabbed my keys.

I needed answers.

Not tomorrow.

Not later.

Now.

Twenty minutes later, I pulled up outside Rachel's house.

The porch light was on.

The front door was slightly open.

I stepped out of the car.

"Rachel?""

No answer.

I pushed the door open.

"Rachel?""

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Then I heard movement upstairs.

A chair scraping.

I ran up the steps.

"Rachel!""

When I reached the hallway, I saw her standing near the bedroom door.

She looked terrified.

And standing across from her was Pastor Caleb.

He turned slowly.

Like he had been expecting me.

"Margaret," he said.

I stopped.

Because the man in front of me no longer looked like the comforting pastor from my memories.

He looked like someone who had been caught.

Rachel moved behind me.

"Tell her," she said.

Pastor Caleb stared at her.

"Think carefully about what you're doing.""

Rachel's face went pale.

But she didn't move.

For the first time, she looked brave.

"Tell her the truth.""

I looked between them.

"What truth?""

Nobody spoke.

Then Pastor Caleb slowly smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

A warning.

"Your sister is about to tell you something that will destroy your relationship with Emily forever.""

My heart sank.

"What did you do?""

He looked at me.

Then he said something I never expected.

"Ask your daughter why she came to me first.""

I felt the room spinning.

Because suddenly I understood.

There was another part of the story.

A part Emily had never told me.

And Rachel's next words confirmed my worst fear.

"Margaret...""

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"Emily didn't meet Caleb by accident.""

I stopped breathing.

"What are you saying?""

May you like

Rachel whispered:

"She was brought to him.""
