Chapter 7: The Reason He Chose Her
I didn't sleep after Claire's phone call.
Not because I was afraid.
Because my mind refused to stop.
Every memory I had of Pastor Caleb was changing shape.
The Sunday sermons.
The family gatherings.
The way he always seemed to know exactly what people needed to hear.
For years, I thought that was kindness.
Now I wondered if it was something else.
Something calculated.
Emily sat across from me at the kitchen table until sunrise.
Neither of us spoke much.
We were both exhausted.
But for the first time in months, we were sitting on the same side.
Not mother against daughter.
Not me fighting her choices.
Just two people trying to understand what happened.
When the sun finally came through the window, Emily looked at me.
"Mom.""
I looked up.
"I need to tell you something else.""
My heart sank.
"Okay.""
She took a deep breath.
"Caleb knew about Dad's life insurance.""
I froze.
"What?""
She looked ashamed.
"He asked me about it.""
"When?""
"Before we got married.""
I stood up.
"Why would he ask you that?""
Emily looked down.
"He said he was helping me understand my family's finances.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"He was your pastor.""
"I know.""
"He wasn't your financial advisor.""
"I know.""
Her voice cracked.
"I know now.""
I walked to the window.
Outside, everything looked normal.
Cars passing.
Neighbors walking dogs.
A regular morning.
But my life had completely changed overnight.
"Emily, what exactly did he know?""
She hesitated.
"He knew Grandpa left you the house.""
I turned around.
My father's old house.
The one he left me after he passed away.
The house I planned to keep for Emily someday.
"How did he know?""
She whispered.
"I told him.""
I closed my eyes.
Not because I was angry.
Because I realized how much trust she had given him.
"He made me feel like he cared about protecting me.""
She wiped her tears.
"He said he wanted to make sure nobody could take advantage of me.""
I walked back to the table.
"Emily, did he ever talk about money?""
She nodded slowly.
"Sometimes.""
"What did he say?""
She looked uncomfortable.
"He said wealth changes people.""
I waited.
"He said some families destroy themselves because they fight over what they have.""
My stomach tightened.
"And did he ever mention himself?""
She was silent.
Then she nodded.
"He said if I ever needed someone trustworthy, he would always be there.""
There it was.
The pattern.
Not one big moment.
Hundreds of small ones.
Little conversations.
Little suggestions.
Little moments where he slowly became the person she depended on.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Rachel.
"Call me. I found something.""
I immediately called.
She answered on the first ring.
"Margaret, I went through old records.""
"What records?""
"Church records.""
I listened carefully.
"Caleb kept private notes about families.""
My face tightened.
"What kind of notes?""
"Personal information.""
My hand gripped the phone.
"About who?""
"Everyone close to him.""
I looked at Emily.
She heard every word.
"Why?""
Rachel lowered her voice.
"I don't know.""
Then she added:
"But I found something about you.""
My heart stopped.
"About me?""
"Yes.""
"What?""
A pause.
Then Rachel said:
"Caleb wrote that you were the person standing between him and Emily.""
The room went silent.
Emily covered her mouth.
"He said that?""
Rachel continued.
"He wrote that Emily trusted you, but she was emotionally dependent on you.""
I felt anger rising.
"He was describing a mother loving her daughter.""
"I know.""
Rachel sounded upset.
"But that's not all.""
I waited.
"What else?""
"He wrote that if Emily became independent from you, she would finally be free.""
My stomach dropped.
Because suddenly everything became clear.
He wasn't trying to make Emily love him.
He was trying to make Emily stop trusting everyone else.
"Rachel," I whispered.
"There's more.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?""
She took a breath.
"Caleb had another notebook.""
"Where?""
"At the church office.""
"Do you have it?""
"No.""
The disappointment hit immediately.
"Then how do you know?""
"Because someone else saw it.""
"Who?""
Rachel didn't answer right away.
Then she said:
"Someone who worked for him.""
The doorbell rang.
I looked toward the front door.
Emily looked at me.
Neither of us moved.
The doorbell rang again.
"Who is that?"" Emily whispered.
I walked slowly toward the window.
A woman stood outside.
Mid-thirties.
Holding a folder.
I didn't recognize her.
But she looked terrified.
I opened the door slightly.
"Can I help you?""
She looked past me.
At Emily.
Then back at me.
"My name is Claire.""
I froze.
The woman from the phone call.
She stepped closer.
"I know I already spoke to you.""
She looked over her shoulder.
"But I couldn't explain everything on the phone.""
"Why?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because Caleb still doesn't know I'm talking to you.""
A chill went through me.
"How did you get here?""
She looked at the folder in her hands.
"I found the proof.""
My breath caught.
"What proof?""
She handed me the folder.
"This is why he wanted Emily.""
I looked down.
The papers inside were covered.
Not with random information.
With names.
Dates.
Families.
And at the top of the first page was a heading.
May you like
A heading that made my blood run cold.
"Future Beneficiaries.""
