Chapter 8: The Truth Buried Under Ten Years

I read Linda’s message again.

Then again.

The words didn’t change.

*If Sarah knows about the trust, she knows about the accident too.*

My hands became cold.

“What accident?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

That was his answer.

I stood up.

“Daniel.””

He looked like he wanted to run.

Not away from me.

Away from the past.

“Tell me.””

“Sarah…”

“Tell me.””

His shoulders dropped.

“There was an accident involving your grandfather’s company.””

“When?””

“Before we met.””

I stared at him.

“And my father knew?””

“Yes.””

“And Linda?””

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“What happened?””

Daniel sat down.

“I don’t know everything.””

I almost laughed.

There it was again.

The same sentence.

The same shield.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

He looked at Emma’s room.

She was playing quietly.

Then he lowered his voice.

“My father died because of a business dispute.””

I froze.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

“But you told me he died from a heart attack.””

Daniel looked away.

“That’s what my mother told everyone.””

My chest tightened.

“How much of my life has been a lie?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked to the window.

The city outside moved like nothing had changed.

People laughed.

Cars drove by.

The world continued.

But mine had cracked open.

“Daniel, did your mother hurt my grandfather?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I turned.

“You’re sure?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t know if your mother was involved in my family’s pain?””

“No.””

“Then why did you stay quiet?””

He covered his face.

“Because every time I got close to the truth, my mother reminded me what happened to my father.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She told me asking questions destroyed our family once.””

I felt a chill.

“She scared you.””

“Yes.””

“And you let her scare you into hurting me.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But for the first time, he wasn’t defending himself.

He was finally admitting what he had done.

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Sarah?””

I didn’t recognize it.

“Yes?””

“My name is Evelyn Carter.””

I waited.

“I used to work for the Harrington family.””

My heart started racing.

“Why are you calling me?””

Her voice became softer.

“Because I saw what happened at Christmas dinner.””

I froze.

“How?””

“I was there.””

My eyes widened.

“You were in the house?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you help me?””

A painful pause.

“Because Linda would have known I was still alive.””

The words made no sense.

“Still alive?””

The woman took a breath.

“Sarah, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“The Harrington family has spent years making people disappear from their lives.””

I looked at Daniel.

He heard her words.

His face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Evelyn continued.

“Your grandfather trusted someone inside the family.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then:

“Linda’s closest ally.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who?””

The woman whispered a name.

A name that made Daniel step backward.

Because he knew it too.

“Daniel’s father.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“That’s exactly what they wanted everyone to believe.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was pale.

“What did you say your name was?””

“Evelyn Carter.””

Daniel whispered:

“The old family accountant.””

I stared at him.

“You know her?””

He nodded slowly.

“She disappeared fifteen years ago.””

The phone almost slipped from my hand.

Evelyn spoke again.

“I didn’t disappear, Sarah.””

A pause.

“I was hiding.””

“Why?””

Her answer came quietly.

“Because I knew the truth about what happened the night your grandfather changed his will.””

My heart stopped.

“What truth?””

Evelyn took a breath.

“Your grandfather didn’t leave you the company because he wanted to reward you.””

“Then why?””

“Because he knew someone in the Harrington family would try to take it.””

The line went silent.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“And Sarah…”

“Your grandfather left one final message for you.””

I whispered:

“What message?””

Evelyn answered:

“He knew Linda would come for you.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“And he wrote one warning.””

“What warning?””

May you like

Her voice became barely audible.

“Never trust the person who says they are protecting you.””
