Chapter 6: The Letter That Changed My Marriage

I couldn’t move.

The room felt smaller.

The Christmas lights on the tree kept blinking behind me, almost mocking the moment.

A holiday that was supposed to bring people together had turned into the night every hidden truth came out.

Daniel held the envelope in his hand.

My name was written on it.

My father’s handwriting.

“Why do you have that?”” I asked.

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I found it in my mother’s study.””

My eyes went to Linda.

She immediately looked away.

That was enough.

“You knew about this?””

Linda didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Did you hide a letter from my father?””

She crossed her arms.

“Your father was trying to manipulate you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“You were.””

Daniel looked between us.

“Mom, what was in the letter?””

Linda’s face tightened.

“Nothing important.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Read it.””

He hesitated.

Then he opened the envelope.

The paper inside was folded carefully.

Like someone had wanted it protected.

He read silently for several seconds.

Then his face changed.

“Daniel?””

He looked up.

“Sarah…”

“What does it say?””

He looked at his mother.

Then back at me.

“It says your father warned me.””

My stomach dropped.

“Warned you about what?””

Daniel’s fingers trembled slightly.

“About marrying you.””

The words felt like a punch.

I stared at him.

“My father warned you not to marry me?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head quickly.

“That’s not what it says.””

“Then what does it say?””

He looked down again.

“It says he was worried you would be hurt by this family.””

I felt tears forming.

My father knew.

He knew something was wrong.

And I had spent years believing he was being judgmental about Daniel.

“He knew Linda would treat me like this.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His silence answered before he did.

“Because my mother told me your father was trying to break us apart.””

I looked at Linda.

She didn’t deny it.

I laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“So for years, both of you knew.””

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Sarah, I was young.””

“You were thirty-two.””

“I thought I was protecting our marriage.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself from conflict.””

He looked hurt.

But I continued.

“You watched me walk into this house every holiday knowing your mother hated me.””

“Sarah…”

“You let me apologize when I did nothing wrong.””

I wiped my tears.

“You let me think I was the problem.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology came too late.

Not because apologies meant nothing.

Because some wounds happen when someone chooses silence over you again and again.

Emma walked toward me slowly.

“Mommy?””

I immediately knelt down.

“Yes, baby?””

“Are we going home?””

I hugged her.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at Emma.

Pain crossed his face.

“Sarah, please don’t take her away from me.””

I looked at him.

“I’m not taking her away.””

I stood.

“I’m taking her away from this.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father said something on the phone.

“Sarah.””

I held it closer.

“Yes?””

“There is one more thing.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

Every answer opened another question.

“What?””

My father took a deep breath.

“The reason Linda wanted you to marry Daniel wasn’t because she approved of you.””

I looked at Linda.

Her expression changed.

“Why?””

My father’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Because she needed something your family had.””

“What?””

“A connection.””

“To what?””

“A company.””

I frowned.

“What company?””

My father paused.

Then he said:

“The company you inherited from your grandfather.””

My blood ran cold.

I felt like the entire room shifted.

“I don’t own a company.””

My father was silent.

Then:

“Sarah…”

His voice broke.

“You do.””

I stared at Daniel.

He looked shocked.

But Linda…

Linda looked terrified.

And that was when I realized something.

My marriage had never been the thing Linda wanted.

May you like

I had been.

And she had spent ten years making sure I never knew why.
