Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Harrington Name
My father stayed silent for several seconds after I asked him what he meant.
Those seconds felt longer than the entire Christmas dinner.
I stood in the middle of Linda Harrington’s dining room with my daughter holding onto my coat, my husband watching me like he was waiting for me to make a mistake, and my mother-in-law looking at my phone like it was a weapon.
“Dad?”” I whispered.
His voice came back lower.
“Sarah, is Daniel standing near you?””
I looked at my husband.
“Yes.””
“Is Linda there?””
“Yes.””
Another pause.
Then my father said something I never expected.
“Do not tell them what I’m about to tell you.””
My heart started racing.
“Why?””
“Because if Linda realizes you know, she’ll try to control the situation.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Sarah, what is he saying?””
I turned away.
For the first time in ten years, I didn’t feel the need to explain myself to my husband.
That feeling was strange.
And powerful.
My father continued.
“Your mother-in-law’s family has been hiding financial problems for years.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Linda’s face tightened.
Daniel immediately looked at his mother.
My father kept talking.
“Before you married Daniel, the Harrington company was nearly bankrupt.””
I stared at the expensive decorations around me.
The designer furniture.
The luxury cars outside.
The house everyone admired.
None of it made sense.
“That can’t be true.””
“Sarah, I don’t say things like this without proof.””
I swallowed.
“What proof?””
My father sighed.
“Years ago, I helped investigate a business dispute involving Linda’s late husband.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
My father’s words hit harder.
“The Harrington family survived because someone covered their losses.””
I looked at Daniel.
His expression had changed.
He wasn’t confused.
He knew.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
His jaw tightened.
“What?””
“You knew.””
He looked away.
That was the answer.
I felt something colder than anger.
Disappointment.
“Daniel, you knew?””
He rubbed his hands together nervously.
“Sarah, it’s complicated.””
I almost laughed.
“That’s always what you say when you don’t want to tell me the truth.””
Linda stepped forward.
“Your father is trying to poison your marriage.””
I looked at her.
“No. My marriage was already poisoned.””
Emma started crying softly.
“Mommy, can we go home?””
That broke my heart.
I knelt down and hugged her.
“Yes, baby. We’re leaving.””
Daniel moved in front of the doorway.
“Sarah, wait.””
I looked up at him.
“Move.””
His face showed pain.
“Please.””
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
But it was stronger than anything I had said all night.
“Daniel, I begged you for years to see what your mother was doing.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stood.
“You didn’t protect me because you were scared of her.””
His eyes lowered.
“You chose being comfortable over being my husband.””
Linda scoffed.
“After everything this family has done for you?””
I turned toward her.
“Everything?””
My voice became calm.
“Your son worked because he was my husband. I raised our daughter. I supported him when he changed careers. I defended you when everyone else told me you were cruel.””
Linda’s expression shifted.
For once, she had no immediate response.
I grabbed Emma’s hand.
But before I reached the door, Daniel finally spoke.
“Sarah.””
I stopped.
His voice sounded different.
Not defensive.
Not angry.
Scared.
“There’s something else.””
I slowly turned around.
“What?””
He looked at his mother.
Linda immediately shook her head.
“Daniel.””
That one word told me everything.
He was afraid of disappointing her.
Not losing me.
Daniel swallowed.
“The reason my mom never wanted you close to my father’s old records…”
I stared at him.
“What records?””
Nobody answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Then Linda suddenly walked toward the fireplace.
She reached behind a decorative frame.
And pulled out a small black folder.
My blood ran cold.
Because my father had mentioned proof.
And Linda was holding something she clearly didn’t want me to see.
“Give me that,” Daniel said.
Linda ignored him.
Her eyes were fixed on me.
“You really want to know who your father is protecting you from?””
I felt Emma’s hand tighten around mine.
“Yes.””
Linda smiled faintly.
But there was no confidence left in it.
Only bitterness.
“Then you should know the truth.””
She opened the folder.
And pulled out a photograph.
She placed it on the table.
I walked closer.
The moment I saw the picture, my entire body went still.
Because standing beside Linda’s late husband in the photograph…
was my father.
May you like
And written on the back of the photo was a date.
A date from before Daniel and I ever met.
