Chapter 6: The Woman From His Past

The name sat on the page between us.

Claire.

I had never heard that name before.

Not once.

Not during our marriage.

Not during conversations about Daniel’s past.

Not during family gatherings.

Nothing.

But the way he reacted told me Claire mattered.

A lot.

“Daniel.””

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“Who is she?””

He remained silent.

And somehow, that silence hurt more than an answer.

I folded the paper.

“After everything you’ve hidden from me, you still can’t tell me?””

His shoulders dropped.

“She’s someone from my past.””

I laughed quietly.

“Someone from your past?””

I looked at the folder.

“She has appointments with your lawyer. Her name is connected to your financial records. And you expect me to believe she’s just someone from your past?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“This is complicated.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“What’s complicated is explaining why my husband secretly destroyed my daughter’s college plans while hiding another woman’s name in a folder.””

His expression changed.

“Don’t say it like that.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he finally sat down.

“Claire was my first wife’s sister.””

I froze.

“Your first wife’s sister?””

“Yes.””

“And why is she involved now?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Because she knows about the trust.””

I stared at him.

“The trust connected to Ethan?””

He nodded.

I felt a strange connection forming.

The money.

The college cancellation.

The secret documents.

Everything was connected.

“What does Claire have to do with Ethan?””

Daniel looked away.

“She was there when my father created the trust agreement.””

“Why?””

“Because my father didn’t trust anyone.””

I crossed my arms.

“And you expect me to believe this is about protecting Ethan?””

Daniel looked at me.

“It is.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying Ethan. You keep saying money. But every decision you made hurt Maya.””

His eyes softened for a moment.

“She reminds me of her mother.””

The words surprised me.

“What?””

Daniel looked down.

“Her mother was independent. She didn’t need anyone. She walked away when things got difficult.””

I stared at him.

“So you’re punishing Maya for what happened in your first marriage?””

“No.””

“But you are.””

Daniel stood.

“I’m trying to make sure I don’t lose another family.””

I looked at him carefully.

“By pushing one person away?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

Later that night, I went to Maya’s room.

She was packing some of her things into boxes.

My heart broke.

“What are you doing?””

She shrugged.

“Getting ready.””

“For what?””

“In case I have to leave.””

I sat beside her.

“You’re not leaving.””

She looked at me.

“Mom, maybe Daniel is right.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“Maybe I’m too expensive.””

I immediately shook my head.

“No.””

“But everything is always about money.””

I held her face gently.

“Maya, listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“Your dreams are not a burden.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I just wanted him to believe in me.””

“I know.””

That night, I made a decision.

I wasn’t just going to fix the dorm situation.

I was going to uncover everything Daniel had hidden.

The next morning, I contacted the attorney whose name appeared on the documents.

I expected resistance.

Instead, the moment I introduced myself, there was a long silence.

Then the attorney said:

“Mrs. Carter, I’ve been waiting for you to call.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

The attorney lowered his voice.

“Because Daniel was never supposed to control that inheritance.””

I gripped the phone.

“What inheritance?””

There was another pause.

Then he said:

“The one your father left specifically for you and Maya.””

I couldn’t speak.

My father’s inheritance.

Maya’s future.

Daniel’s secret.

Everything was connected.

“But why would Daniel hide it from me?””

The attorney answered quietly.

“Because if you knew the full terms of your father’s will, you would understand why he was desperate to stop Maya from leaving for college.””

I stood frozen in the kitchen.

“What terms?””

The attorney took a breath.

“Your father added one condition.””

I waited.

And then I heard the sentence that changed everything.

“He wanted Maya to have complete independence from anyone who tried to control her life.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Toward my daughter’s room.

And suddenly, I understood.

Daniel wasn’t protecting his family.

May you like

He was fighting against the one thing that could take his power away.

Maya’s freedom.
