Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Papers
I barely slept that night.
Daniel’s final words kept replaying in my mind.
“Your daughter isn’t the only one whose future is about to change.””
It wasn’t a threat.
It was worse.
It sounded like a confession he wasn’t ready to make.
By sunrise, I had already made my decision.
I wasn’t going to argue with Daniel.
I wasn’t going to beg him for answers.
I was going to find the truth myself.
Because something had changed between us.
For years, I believed Daniel and I were a team.
We made decisions together.
We planned for the future together.
We built a home together.
But the moment he secretly canceled Maya’s dorm room, he showed me that he was capable of making life-changing decisions behind my back.
And I needed to know why.
I found Maya sitting at the kitchen table that morning.
She looked exhausted.
Her college hoodie hung loosely around her shoulders, and her untouched cereal sat in front of her.
I sat beside her.
“Sweetheart.””
She looked up.
“Are you mad at Daniel?””
I took a breath.
“I’m hurt.””
She looked down.
“I knew he didn’t really want me to go.””
Those words broke my heart.
“You knew?””
Maya nodded slowly.
“He always acted like he supported me, but whenever we talked about college, he would find a reason why it wasn’t practical.””
She picked at the edge of her sleeve.
“He told me maybe I should start at a community college instead.””
I frowned.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t want to create problems.””
I stared at my daughter.
She was trying to protect everyone else while her own dreams were being taken away.
“Maya, listen to me.””
She looked at me.
“You never have to make yourself smaller to keep this family comfortable.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I just wanted him to be proud of me.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because Maya wasn’t asking for money.
She wasn’t asking for special treatment.
She just wanted someone who loved her to believe in her.
A few hours later, Daniel left for work.
The moment his car disappeared down the street, I went back into the office.
I knew exactly where he had hidden the folder.
But this time, I wasn’t looking for proof that he had made a bad decision.
I was looking for the reason.
Inside the folder were more documents.
Some were financial records.
Some were handwritten notes.
Then I found something that made my breathing stop.
A letter.
It wasn’t addressed to me.
It was addressed to Daniel.
I unfolded it carefully.
The letter was from an attorney.
The first line immediately caught my attention.
“Regarding the conditions of the trust agreement…”
Trust agreement?
I continued reading.
The letter mentioned a property.
A large amount of money.
And a condition connected to Daniel’s marriage.
I read the same paragraph three times because my mind refused to accept it.
Daniel wasn’t struggling financially.
He wasn’t worried about college expenses.
He had money.
A lot of money.
But why was he pretending otherwise?
Then I saw another page.
It was a copy of an agreement involving Ethan, Daniel’s son.
The document explained that certain assets would transfer under specific conditions.
One condition stood out.
Daniel’s financial responsibilities toward his household had to be “restructured” before the transfer could happen.
I didn’t understand everything.
But I understood enough.
Daniel wasn’t trying to save money.
He was trying to control something.
The sound of a car door closing outside made me panic.
I quickly put everything back.
But I was too late.
The front door opened.
Daniel walked in.
He looked at me standing in the office.
This time, he didn’t look angry.
He looked defeated.
“You found it.””
I didn’t answer.
“What is the trust agreement?””
His face changed.
“Where did you see that?””
“Answer me.””
Daniel closed the door behind him.
For a moment, he looked older.
Tired.
Like he had been carrying a secret for a long time.
“Maya can’t know about this.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because she’ll misunderstand.””
I almost laughed.
“Misunderstand? Daniel, you secretly canceled her dorm room.””
He looked away.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
His eyes hardened.
“You don’t know everything.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence filled the room.
Finally, Daniel sat down.
“When I married you, I had nothing.””
I stared at him.
“That’s not true.””
“I mean financially.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“My father left money behind. A trust. But there were rules.””
“What rules?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The money is protected for Ethan.””
I waited.
“And?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“And if my financial situation changes, the trust changes.””
I felt a chill.
“Daniel…”
He looked down.
“I needed to make sure Ethan was protected.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So you sacrificed Maya?””
“No.””
“You did.””
His voice rose.
“I was trying to make a difficult decision.””
“A decision you made alone.””
He stood.
“You don’t understand what it’s like to have responsibilities.””
I stared at him.
“Don’t talk to me about responsibilities when you’re willing to break a girl’s dream to protect a bank account.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
And then he said something that made me realize this was much bigger than college.
“You think this is about Maya going away.””
He shook his head.
“It isn’t.””
“Then what is it about?””
He looked at the stairs.
Then at me.
“It’s about what happens when she leaves.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happens?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out another envelope.
And placed it on the table.
“This arrived yesterday.””
I looked at the envelope.
My name was written on it.
I froze.
“Why is something with my name on it in your possession?””
Daniel looked nervous.
“I was hoping I could handle this before you saw it.””
I slowly picked it up.
The envelope was from a law office.
And before I even opened it, I knew my life was about to change.
May you like
Because Daniel wasn’t just hiding money.
He was hiding something about me.
