Chapter 2: The Hidden Reason

That night, nobody ate dinner.

The house felt like a place where everyone was waiting for a storm to arrive.

Maya stayed upstairs.

I sat at the kitchen table staring at the untouched plates in front of me.

Daniel acted like everything was normal.

He poured himself coffee.

He checked his phone.

He even turned on the television.

Like he hadn’t just taken away the most important opportunity of our daughter’s life.

Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t look up.

“What?””

“Tell me the real reason.””

He slowly lowered his coffee cup.

“I already told you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You gave me an excuse.””

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t understand why you’re making this bigger than it is.””

“Because it is big.””

I stood up.

“You canceled her housing. You didn’t discuss it with me. You didn’t discuss it with her.””

Daniel leaned back.

“She’s not a child anymore.””

“Exactly.””

I stared at him.

“She’s an adult starting her future, and you secretly interfered.””

His expression became colder.

“You always take her side.””

That sentence hurt.

Because it revealed more than he realized.

“She’s my daughter, Daniel.””

“She’s my stepdaughter.””

The words hung in the air.

For years, he had been part of her life.

He attended school events.

Helped with homework.

Called himself her father figure.

But in that moment, he separated himself from her with one sentence.

I lowered my voice.

“Do you even care what happens to her?””

Daniel looked annoyed.

“Of course I care.””

“Then why did you do this?””

He didn’t answer.

I watched his face carefully.

Then I noticed something.

A small smile.

Not happiness.

Satisfaction.

Like he believed he had solved a problem.

That scared me.

Later that night, after Daniel went to bed, I went back downstairs.

I couldn’t sleep.

Something was bothering me about those papers.

I walked into the office.

Daniel usually kept important documents in the locked drawer, but earlier he had been careless.

The drawer was slightly open.

I hesitated.

I knew I shouldn’t invade his privacy.

But this wasn’t about a private conversation.

This was about my daughter.

I opened it.

Inside were several envelopes.

Bills.

Bank statements.

And a folder with Maya’s name written on it.

My heart started pounding.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a copy of her college acceptance letter.

The second page was a printed tuition estimate.

Then I found something that made my hands go cold.

A financial plan.

Not for Maya.

For Daniel.

He had written notes about selling our house in the future.

Reducing expenses.

Changing accounts.

And one sentence was underlined.

“Maya leaving home changes everything.””

I stared at those words.

Why would my daughter going to college change everything?

I turned the page.

There were more notes.

More calculations.

And then I saw a name I recognized.

Daniel’s son from his previous marriage.

Ethan.

My stomach twisted.

Because suddenly, I remembered all the little comments Daniel had made over the past year.

How he worried about “fairness.””

How he complained that Maya’s college expenses were “too much.””

How he said we needed to think about “our priorities.””

But I never imagined those priorities didn’t include my daughter.

A floorboard creaked behind me.

I froze.

Slowly, I turned around.

Daniel was standing in the doorway.

His face was completely different.

No calm expression.

No fake patience.

Just anger.

“What are you doing?””

I closed the folder.

“What is this, Daniel?””

He walked into the room.

“You had no right to look through my things.””

“You had no right to sabotage Maya’s future.””

His eyes narrowed.

For the first time, I saw fear behind his anger.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“Then explain it.””

Silence.

I held up the folder.

“Why does Maya leaving home change everything?””

Daniel stared at me.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because if Maya goes to that school…”

He stopped.

Like he almost revealed too much.

I stepped closer.

“Because what?””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Then back at me.

And whispered:

“Because you’ll finally see what I’ve been hiding from you.””

My heart raced.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked past me, grabbed the folder, and held it tightly.

But before he left, one sentence stopped me completely.

May you like

“Your daughter isn’t the only one whose future is about to change.””

And the next morning, I discovered a secret that would destroy everything I thought I knew about my husband.
