Chapter 5: The Hidden Contract

The envelope felt heavier than it should have.

It was only paper.

A few pages.

A few signatures.

But somehow, holding it felt like holding the entire weight of my marriage.

Adrian stood across from me, watching my every movement.

Not like a husband watching his wife.

Like a businessman waiting to see how much damage had been discovered.

That hurt more than I expected.

“Claire,” he said quietly.

I looked at him.

“Don’t.””

His face tightened.

“I need to explain.””

“You’ve had three years to explain.””

The words came out colder than I intended.

But I didn’t take them back.

I opened the envelope.

The first page was a legal agreement.

The second page was a financial summary.

The third page contained something that made my hands go completely still.

Adrian Mercer’s signature.

Next to a statement confirming that his marriage to Claire Hart would “strengthen strategic relationships and provide long-term stability for Mercer Dynamics.””

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Strategic relationships.

Stability.

Not love.

Not commitment.

Not partnership.

A strategy.

I looked up.

“Explain this.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“It’s not what it looks like.””

I almost smiled.

That was the sentence everyone used when there was no good explanation.

“What does it look like?””

He didn’t answer.

I held up the document.

“Because it looks like you turned our marriage into a business deal.””

“That was never the intention.””

“Then why does your signature say otherwise?””

He looked away.

That small movement told me more than his words.

I walked toward the window.

The city outside was waking up.

People were going to work.

Taking their children to school.

Living normal lives.

Meanwhile, my entire reality was falling apart.

“I loved you.””

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

I closed my eyes.

That sentence used to fix everything.

A bad day.

An argument.

A misunderstanding.

But now it sounded like something he was trying to convince himself of.

“When did you start loving me?””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“When?””

He hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s the problem.””

I turned around.

“You knew exactly when you discovered my father. You knew exactly when my name became valuable to you. But you don’t know when you loved me?””

His expression changed.

Because he knew I was right.

The worst part wasn’t that Adrian had made mistakes.

Everyone made mistakes.

The worst part was that he had built a life around hiding them.

“Claire, I was struggling.””

I stayed silent.

“My company was almost collapsing. Investors were leaving. Employees were scared.””

“So you found me.””

“No.””

“You found the Ellison name.””

His jaw tightened.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I stared at him.

“You stood in front of me last night and accused me of destroying your company.””

My voice shook slightly.

“You believed a woman you barely trusted over the person who stood beside you for three years.””

He lowered his eyes.

“And now you’re asking me to be fair?””

The silence between us was unbearable.

Then Adrian whispered:

“I never planned for this.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For you to find out.””

Those words were the closest thing to a confession.

I stepped back.

“You’re right.””

His eyes lifted.

“I never would have found out if Vanessa hadn’t become greedy.””

His face changed.

“What does Vanessa have to do with this?””

I looked at the documents again.

“Maybe everything.””

Before Adrian could respond, my phone rang.

My father.

I answered.

“Dad.””

“Claire, listen carefully.””

His tone immediately told me something had happened.

“What?””

“We found additional information about Vanessa.””

I straightened.

“What kind of information?””

“She wasn’t only involved with Adrian.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

“She has connections to several executives who recently gained access to Mercer Dynamics.””

I looked at Adrian.

He noticed my expression.

“What did your father say?””

I ignored him.

“Are you saying she was targeting his company?””

“I’m saying Vanessa’s involvement appears larger than anyone realized.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Dad, how much bigger?””

A pause.

Then:

“Claire, there is something else.””

“What?””

“We found a transfer from a private account linked to Vanessa.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Where did the money go?””

My father’s voice became quieter.

“Into an account created under your husband’s name.””

The room went silent.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Adrian stared at me.

“What?””

I looked at him.

And for the first time, he looked genuinely confused.

Not guilty.

Confused.

That was when I realized something important.

Maybe Adrian had betrayed me.

Maybe he had lied.

But maybe he wasn’t the only person being manipulated.

“Adrian.””

His eyes met mine.

“What did Vanessa tell you about the company leak?””

“She said you were jealous of my success.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“What?””

“She wasn’t protecting you.””

I held up the document.

“She was protecting herself.””

Adrian’s face changed.

Because the possibility had finally entered his mind.

The possibility that Vanessa had not been his escape.

She had been his trap.

Then his office phone rang.

He looked at it.

A notification appeared.

His assistant.

He answered.

“Hello?””

The color disappeared from his face within seconds.

“What do you mean the investors are pulling out?””

I watched him carefully.

The same man who had raised a belt against me the night before was now standing helplessly as his empire started collapsing.

Then he looked at me.

“Claire…”

His voice cracked.

“They froze my accounts.””

I said nothing.

“Your father did this?””

I looked at the papers in my hand.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Someone else started this.””

Adrian swallowed.

“Who?””

Before I could answer, his assistant spoke through the phone.

And whatever she said made Adrian completely freeze.

“Mr. Mercer…”

His eyes widened.

“The person who reported the fraud was…”

He looked at me.

May you like

And whispered the name.

“Vanessa.””
